Thanks To Frank Ciolino for these old pictures.

This picture is taken from where the Pigeon Cove Whole Foods/ Montagnino Building  is looking from the inner harbor outwards.   Note the broken down piers and abandoned boat.

If you guessed The Steve Conolly Seafoods/former John B. Wright building was what is now in place where the previous picture was taken then you would be right.   Before it was this there was a department store and gas station here if I’m correct.  Somene who knows for sure, fill us in in the comment secion right below.

Can you guess what is going to be in this space in the updated picture coming at 8:00AM

Note the number of boats and size of the fishing boats tied 4 abreast at the State Fish Pier.  In Harbor Cove they say you could walk across the cove by hopping from boat to boat and almost get to the other side.  Now most fishing boats have their own berth and don’t have another boat tied up next to them even though the average size boat in our fleet is probably half of what it was back then.

Harbor Cove- Fisherman’s Wharf and Captain’s Courageous- Site of New Latitude 43

Much thanks to Frank Ciolino who brought down a bunch of old photos of Gloucester from roughly 1980.

Maybe someone could identify the building that is to the left of Captain’s Courageous in the photo.  I’m guessing it was the old Gloucester Grocery but I’m not sure.  There is an alleyway that provides public access there now.  In the post above this one, the Lat 43 sign is located on the left corner of the Captain Courageous building in this photo.

The Fisherman’s Wharf Building has been replaced after a fire a few years back with a corrugated steel building.

Gloucester At Dawn- Lat 43 and Fisherman’s Wharf 4:50AM 3/30/09

In this photo you see Lat 43 and Fisherman’s Wharf ‘s relatively new corrugated steel building in the background.   A fire in 1998 burned the former building to a total loss.

The Boston Herald, August 18th, 1998

An 80-year-old wharf in Gloucester Harbor was destroyed by a six-alarm fire, leaving more than a dozen fishing families wondering how they’ll survive.

“This is heartbreaking. The more we think about it, the more devastating it is,” said Jack Scola, one of the owners. “We’re glad no one was hurt, but the building is a total loss and now we have to start over.”

That was some fire.  I watched it from the other side at The Gloucester House and it was a nasty one.

Salted Mackerel

Salted herring and mackerel sit in vats, preserved for use as lobster bait.

Over time the salt draws all the fluid from the fish and they shrivel up a bit.  Here, our friend Mr Mackerel could use a drink of water to rehydrate.  Not to worry, soon enough he will be stuffed in a bait bag and sent off the back of a lobster boat to lure in some unsuspecting lobster that’s poking around at the bottom of the ocean looking for a meal.  Mr Mackerel will sure enough find that water once again…..just before he becomes lunch.
