This week we are celebrating the cod. We photographed Connolly Seafoods’ day boats returning with cod they had hooked “the old fashion way” according to one of the fisherman.

Much to our surprise not only is there another column out there called Fish on Fridays, but they did a story on Gloucester’s salt machines! The online journal is: Science Progress – where science, technology and policy meet.

Kathy and Marty spent some time at the Jodrey State Fish Pier this week to see what was going on. This week, most of the activity centered on the herring and mackerel fleet consisting of the Challenger, the Endeavour and the Voyager. The fleet’s catch is processed whole and sold frozen as food to foreign markets or as fresh, frozen or salted bait for domestic use.
There is almost always something going on at the Pier including off-loading, salting, icing or maintaining vessels and gear.

This week we photographed our native shrimp on the line at Steve Connolly Seafood. The shrimp catch is limited to Mondays and Wednesdays with nets out of the water by 2pm. Unfortunately, the season will only last a few weeks. Romeo, who purchases fish for Connolly, has some comments about his suppliers.

Today Kathy is sharing monkfish images. Romeo, the fish buyer for Connolly Seafoods,(www.steveconnollyseafood.com) is pictured at Cape Ann Seafood Exchange as he examines and comments on monkfish as the “poor man’s lobster”. Next image is a beauty shot of the wide smile. The second video is shot at Connolly, of the production line, showing the filleting and skinning of a monkfish tail.

An Island No More Ron Gilson ©Kim Smith 2013Yesterday on our front porch my husband found a wonderful surprise package, not long a mystery from where it came with a lovely inscription from the author himself, Ron Gilson.  An Island No More ~ The Gloucester I Knew is a deeply personal and fascinating account of Gloucester’s working waterfront and its people, with hundreds of black and white photographs. I was immediately transported to Gloucester during the Great Depression and haven’t been able to put down the book. An Island No More is available from Amazon or by contacting the author at P.O. Box 557, Gloucester, MA 01930.
Note: The little boy sitting on the dock and looking at the Emily Brown (see the book jacket illustration) is none other than RON at eleven years old, circa 1944.

I Don’t Know if I’ll ever Get Used To It

A Beautiful Flat Calm Sea day and Boats Tied Up Because Of Quotas and Regulations.  When we were growing up and offloading boats the entire fleet would be untied from the dock with their nets in the water.

Different era it is I guess.

I’ve only been back from Naples for two days and what do I do? Hit the ground running getting you new insider peeks at stuff that isn’t even open to the public yet. The new exhibit upstairs in the new building at The Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center is getting ready for it’s opening in just a few weeks but we get you inside first with a couple of videos and some pictures to whet your appetite. (look for the first video at 8:00AM today)
