Essex Shipbuilding Museum’s "Lewis H. Story" at Salem Maritime Festival

Len Burgess submits-

Essex Shipbuilding Museum’s flagship “Lewis H. Story” was a big attraction at the Salem Maritime Festival on Saturday. Intentionally rolling the ship over at low tide, as shown, is how the original Chebbaco 2-man fishing schooners of the 1700’s would unloaded their catch of the day and also the way they would repair and paint the bottom when the tide was out. The Shipbuilding Museum’s booth at the festival was also very busy all afternoon.

Essex Shipbuilding Museum’s "Intense Digital Photography Workshop"

Len Burgess submits-

Barry O’Brien and his volunteer teachers, Len Burgess, Kathy Chapman, Dave Delorey, Tony Schettino, and Mike Dyer, lead an intense photo workshop at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum Saturday to help raise money for the Museum. We had perfect weather and enthusiastic attendees. Here’s the class picture taken by Dave Delorey (who magically always manages to get into the photo too).

Essex MA at Dawn- Essex River Basin 4:36AM 5/24/12

I slipped in the muddy flat and covered my entire leg with sludge.   Got eaten alive by mosquitoes.

But it was worth it for this.

Don’t know if anyone asked you to help us publicize our upcoming 2012 Volunteer Day Mug-Up scheduled for Saturday March 31 from 10:00 to 12:00 noon at the museum 66 Main Street, Essex, MA 01929.  I’ve attached our volunteer application as well as our poster for this event.  We need volunteers!  Anything you and GMG can do to help spread the word would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

The life and times of Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838) presented by Essex Shipbuilding Museum Tuesday, Nov 1st

Join us at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum for The Life and Times of Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838. Guest speaker Prof. George Brandenburg, ret., former Director of Laboratory for Particle Physics and Cosmology, Harvard University .

image

Bowditch didn’t attend school after age 12, let alone go to Harvard, yet he managed to teach himself Latin, French, mathematics and astronomy.  He learned math and physics well enough to make world-renowned contributions in both fields. As a young man he made five sea voyages, rising from second mate to captain, and along the way authored the well-known maritime manual "The New American Practical Navigator." This book, commonly called "Bowditch," made it possible for generations of sailors to navigate around the oceans with only the sun, moon, and stars to guide them. He retired from the sea as a captain at the age of 31 and put his mathematical skills to work as an insurance executive. However, in his spare time, he continued his work in physics and astronomy.

Prof. Brandenburg is an experimental particle physicist. Since retiring and moving to Salem in 2008, Prof. Brandenburg has been volunteering at the NPS Salem Maritime National Historic Site and on the Friendship. This led him to the study of 19th century celestial navigation and the contributions made by Salem ‘s own Nathaniel Bowditch.

The Waterline Center is a handicapped accessible facility.

Tickets may be ordered on-line, by phone, email, or at the door.

Refreshments will be served.

Top Pick For Saturday- VIEW THE LAUNCH OF THE SCHOONER ARDELLE FROM THE ESSEX SHIPBUILDING MUSEUM

SATURDAY, JULY 9 STARTING AT 3:00 PM

Join us at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum’s Shipyard on Saturday, July 9, 2011 to view the launching of the Pinky Schooner Ardelle that is being built by Harold A. Burnham, an eleventh generation Essex shipwright. On Labor Day 2010 we celebrated the signing of her keel and the raising of her first frames. It was an exciting day and all who attended had a great time. Harold is now ready to launch the Schooner Ardelle and we will be there to celebrate.

It’s not often that wooden schooners are launched anywhere in this country, and we are fortunate to have in Essex a craftsman who knows how to build a wooden schooner the same way they were built centuries ago. Harold Burnham and a band of volunteers have spent the last 10 months building this vessel. They’ve been outside in snow storms, rain, and blistering heat. On Saturday, July 9th between 6 – 7 pm she will finally hit the water using the time honored, and exciting, Essex side launch. The Essex Shipbuilding Museum is one of the best places to view a launch from the H.A. Burnham Boatbuilding yard, and we plan on celebrating. Starting at 3 pm we will have live music from Michael Forney’s Bluegrass Band, Daisy Nell and Captain Stan and the second graders from Essex Elementary will perform songs from “The Stowaway Mouse”, hot dogs and Italian sausages from Kayem, chowder from Woodman’s of Essex , and all kinds of beverages. So, mark your calendars and join us!

4th Annual Digital Photography Workshop

On Saturday I had the opportunity, along with over a dozen others, to tap into the expertise of 4 photographers at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum. By using the museum environment, Barry, Dave, Tony, and Lenny presented a day-long workshop on camera basics, composition, lighting, portraiture, and photo documentary. After each segment, we were sent out into the yard to capture photos using what we had just learned.

The construction of the Ardelle, the antique tools, the boats, the woodshops, the entire Museum grounds gave us excellent material to practice our newfound knowledge. We students ranged from beginners to advanced photographers, and each of us was able to take what we needed from the workshop. I now have a better understanding of the cause and effect of different aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings. The guys went out with us and answered our specific questions and gave us tips. Then we returned to our “classroom” where we were able to view our images on the big screen. We politely critiqued each others’ photos with positive input from the instructors.

The rain held off until late afternoon.  We celebrated our day of success, exchanged email addresses, and left with a big thank you to the Workshop team!

If you are interested in becoming a better photographer, watch for this workshop in the future. Take the time to do a photo walk around the Essex Shipbuilding Museum on your own, and if you like what you see, become a member!
