Today marked the last of the ribbon cutting ceremonies for the exciting new kiosks (nine total) that have been installed by the Essex National Heritage all along the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway. Mayor Sefatia and Representative Ann Margaret Ferrante did the honors. The kiosk is located at Stage Fort Park near the visitor’s center. Essex Heritage is pleased to announce the installation of 9 informational kiosks in communities along the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway. The Byway is a state-designated route linking 14 coastal cities and towns from Lynn to Salisbury. These kiosks are a part of a wayfinding signage project that has been ongoing for over a decade with the goal of supporting a tourism-based economic initiative by showcasing the region’s historic, cultural, and natural places.
The 90-mile Essex Coastal Scenic Byway guides visitors and residents through one of the country’s most picturesque and historically significant regions – Boston’s legendary North Shore. The route features mile after mile of breathtaking vistas, historic homes, access to world-class art and culture destinations, distinctive local businesses and visitor centers. To celebrate the installation of the kiosk in Gloucester, please take note of the event details below.

An illustrated talk by local historian William R. Cross
GLOUCESTER, Mass. (June 13, 2018) – The Cape Ann Museumand Historic New England are pleased to present a special lecture about Thomas Jefferson Coolidge, on Saturday, June 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Coolidge Point: The Thomas Jefferson Memorial in Manchester, MA. Thomas Jefferson Coolidge: A Man Ahead of His Time, presented by William R. Cross, spotlights the 19th century industrialist whose vision and generosity shape Manchester and New England to this day. Discover the history of Coolidge’s “wild promontory,” which he shaped into one of the most beautiful places in Massachusetts. Following the lecture, enjoy a visit to the grounds of Historic New England’s most recent acquisition; light refreshments provided.
William R. Cross is a member of the Board of the Cape Ann Museum with a deep knowledge of the 19th century history of Manchester and of Cape Ann. A longtime public and private equity investor, he now serves as a consultant to various museums, and writes and lectures on art and local history. He also serves on the Board of the Yale Center for Faith and Culture, and has served in the past on many other for-profit and not-for-profit boards, including those of Christ Church (Hamilton, MA), Christians in the Visual Arts (Madison, WI), and the Museum of Biblical Art (aka MOBIA, formerly New York, NY). He received his BA from Yale College magna cum laude, and his MBA from Harvard University. He resides in Manchester with his wife Ellen; they are the proud parents of two grown sons.
Coolidge Point: The Thomas Jefferson Memorial is located at 9 Coolidge Point, Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA 01944. Several special public programs will be held there this summer. It is one of more than three dozen historic sites owned and operated by Historic New England, the oldest and largest regional heritage organization in the nation. Historic New England saves and shares New England’s past to engage and inform present and future generations. Historic New England engages diverse audiences in developing a deeper understanding and enjoyment of New England home life by being the national leader in collecting, preserving, and using significant buildings, landscapes, archives, stories, and objects from the past to today.

Secretary John Kerry reconnected with Mayor Romeo-Theken before he took to the podium to address more than 300 guests attending the Essex National Heritage 20th Anniversary gala at the Peabody Essex Museum. They go way back. Essex National Heritage was designated in 1996 with key support from John Kerry and Ted Kennedy.

On April 5 2017 we’re celebrating all of the incredible organizations and people that we’ve spent the last two decades working with to preserve and enhance the significant historic, cultural, and natural places that make Essex County like nowhere else. We are also THRILLED that Secretary John Kerry will joining as the celebrate. Secretary Kerry played a key role in the federal legislation designating the Essex National Heritage Area in 1996!
Who are the Trailblazers and which will receive a toast? The public nominated 131 Trailblazers. While all Trailblazers will be recognized at the Gala, only a few will be honored with a special toast! The public was invited to vote for which Trailblazers will receive a toast, and the results will be revealed only at the event; toasts will be made at the Gala!

After years of planning and partnering, a new Essex National Heritage Area Visitor Information Desk has been added inside the already wonderful Salem National Park Service Visitor Center.
From the press release:
“The new partnership between Essex Heritage and the National Park Service will provide the Visitor Center’s 375,000 annual visitors with information about attractions, destinations, restaurants, resources and more in Salem and throughout Essex County.”
Katherine and Ryan will be managing this important hub. Prior to this post they worked for 6 years at the Visitor Center. Bonus: they live on the North Shore, and they both grew up on the North Shore. They are excited to join Essex National Heritage.
