…and I got some photos!
The concert was almost two weeks ago, but I’ve been too busy to get the photos ready until now… I have wanted to see Gordon Bok in concert since I was a child, so it was great to finally have the chance! And “Three Sheets to the Wind” are a great group to hear and to sing with. It was a wonderful evening of music!
Last Saturday I went to “Letters from Ireland”, a concert by Chorus North Shore with counter-tener Thomas Mark Fallon, The Travelers Three Plus One, actress Pauline Miceli, and Trautel Brown on Irish pipes. The Chorus includes many members from Gloucester and Rockport. The music was at beautiful – at times tranquil and other times rousing (with audience participation in some cases)! Well worth the price of admission.
Last Thursday, St. Ann School had its Christmas concert. Kudos to their choir director, Lori L’Italien, for her great work with the kids! The cuteness factor of the little kids was off the charts. Here are a few photos:

It will be held on Thursday, December 20 at 1:00 pm in St. Ann Church
(60 Prospect St. in Gloucester).
The children have been working very hard to prepare for this year’s concert, which includes many traditional Christmas carols.
On Saturday night, I went to Chorus North Shore’s Christmas concert at Our Lady of Hope in Ipswich (almost Cape Ann), which featured Vivaldi’s Gloria, “Christmas is Coming: a festive cantata”, and other songs of the season.
Chorus North Shore (which includes many Cape Ann residents) performed together with the Honors Youth Choir and the Festival Orchestra.
Gloucester resident Don Roby, besides singing in the choir, had a reading part and headed up The Boar’s Head carol (pun intended):
Either the boar’s head is hollow (or made of styrofoam), or maybe Don has been hitting the gym. He held that huge boar’s head aloft until the whole verse was over.
Alexander Thompson (of Ma’s Brands fame, who has an amazing voice, but does not sing in this choir) was in attendance with pencil and paper – not taking notes, but drawing:
The concert was great! Kudos to all the performers, the director, the technicians, etc.!
Advent-Christmas Concert at St. Ann’s Church
The choir of Holy Family Parish will be offering
its 8th annual free Advent-Christmas Concert
on Sunday, December 9, at 2PM.
In addition to the parish adult choir and the children’s choir, the pastor, Fr. John Kiley, will present some organ pieces. Not wanting to be left out of a musical event like this one, GMG contributor Fr. Matthew Green will also sing with the choir.
No tickets necessary! Come and enjoy the music!
Holy Family Parish is located just north of the intersection of Prospect Street and Pleasant Street. The entrance to the parking lot is on Prospect.
Be careful to avoid parking in the lot for Savour Wine and Cheese, which is across Pleasant Street from the church parking lot. Unless maybe you stop in to Savour and pick up some treats beforehand, and ask permission to stay in the lot…

On Thursday, May 31, St. Ann School had it’s “Celebration of Art”, which included both a show of visual artwork produced by the students (which I covered yesterday) and a concert in which all the students participated. Here are some photos and video!

The parish choir (directed by Tom Misuraca) sang before Mass yesterday night, offering a sort of recap of the Christmas concert held earlier in the month. Here are some highlights.
Unfortunately, in one or two places there is a little bit of feedback in the microphones which mixes with the higher frequencies in the music and makes it sound a little off-pitch, but the choir sounded great.

Earth Day Celebration – April 23rd
Celebrate and Be Celebrated this Earth Day!
It has been a long winter and now that the snow has finally melted, it is time to give the City we love a good Spring Cleaning! So here is your chance!! In observance of Earth Day we are asking folks to turn out for a citywide clean up on Saturday, April 23rd. And after you are done cleaning, you are invited to an Earth Day Concert featuring Chelsea Berry and friends at the Cape Ann Brewery from 6 to 8 pm!
Interested participants (all ages welcome!) should plan to meet at Stage Fort Park Visitors Center Saturday morning starting at 9 am until noon to pick up gloves and City provided yellow trash and clear recycling bags. A limited number of pick sticks will be available so volunteers are encouraged to bring their own tools if they want. The clean up will take place rain or shine. The Clean City Initiative will be focusing on Stage Fort Park from 9 to noon, the One Hour at a Time Gang will be working downtown, but the clean up is citywide and participants are encouraged to choose a public area in Gloucester they would like to see cleaned up. We are also asking different groups to reach out to their members and pick a problem area to clean that day. We will also have a list of suggested sites on hand, if folks need ideas.

Berry Green Earth Day Concert April 23rd from 6 – 8 at The Brewery
Chelsea (Berry) will be doing an Earth Day Concert at The Brewery (from 6 to 8 pm) that night along with Pete Lindberg and Jake Pardee. Anyone can go, not just volunteers, but it is hoped that volunteers go and be celebrated for their work. All ages are welcome!

Over 500 people attended the Cape Ann Symphony’s Koto Magic Concert on Sunday, March 27 at the Fuller Auditorium. Over $2200 in funds were raised for Japan relief and over 400 handmade paper cranes were given to audience members that donated to the International Red Cross for earthquake and tsunami relief in Japan. Cape Ann Symphony donated a percentage of ticket proceeds from the concert and raised additional funds through donations from the audience to aid Japan Relief efforts.
Cape Ann Symphony President Tom Class told the audience that it was "purely coincidental that we would be featuring the Koto at this time, but wonderfully appropriate under the circumstances and we will donate a percentage of the proceeds of our ticket sales to the International Red Cross for Japanese relief." He then invited the audience to donate as well, in return for which each person would receive a small origami crane, created by the Boston Origami Project, whose members handmade the colorful printed cranes in a variety of colors and prints including tie dye, flowers, polka dots and animal prints in the Fuller lobby all afternoon. According to Cape Ann Symphony principal oboist Akane Inoue who organized the collaboration with the Boston Origami Project, “We are so happy for the tremendous outpouring of support from the Cape Ann Symphony audience!”
President Class reported that Conductor Yoichi Udagawa’s family in Japan, together with the families of several other Japanese members of our orchestra including Akane Inoue, was safe. "We are grateful for that," he said. "But we should also be mindful of the great need and thankful that we can do our small part to help." "It is so gratifying to be a part of such a generous organization as the Cape Ann Symphony," declared Maestro Udagawa.
The Koto, an ancient Japanese stringed instrument, whose origins date back 1500 years was featured at the concert. This beautiful, harp-like instrument was played by soloist Yuki Yasuda in two original pieces with the orchestra commissioned by Cape Ann Symphony, East Wind, composed by Takashi Koto and Concertino No. 3 for Koto and Orchestra by Martin Schreiner. Both composers were in attendance and received standing ovations.
The program also included Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri and Dvorak’s Symphony No.8, which received a standing ovation at the close of the concert.
