Schooner Adventure Sails Into Gloucester 1988 From Ron Gilson’s Collection

While at Ron Gilson’s house I saw this poster sized picture of The Adventure coming into Gloucester Harbor under sail in 1988.  What is interesting about the picture is that if you look at City Hall in 1988 it was surrounded by scaffolding under a reconstruction.  Some twenty years later it was surrounded by scaffolding once again.

Look for the first of a three part video series from Ron Gilson’s house satrting todat at 8:00AM

This looks like a scene right out of the Alfred Hitchcock movie. I can’t help it, but I was scared just sitting in my car watching this yesterday. Doesn’t take much though!

Susan Erony: The WPA Murals Lecture

aposter

Friday, October 24th at 7PM, seARTS and the Gloucester Committee for the Arts  will present a talk on the WPA murals featuring Gloucester based artist and lecturer, Susan Erony.  The talk will be held at City Hall and the community is invited to join in celebration of these murals and the program that created them.  It is free and open to the public. Erony’s talk will focus on the WPA City Hall murals and their relation to the social, political and art history of the period. Gloucester was one of the many beneficiaries of the Federal Art Project mural program under the Works Progress Administration. From 1935 through 1942, murals were painted in the Hovey, Forbes, Eastern Avenue , Maplewood and Central Grammar Schools , the Sawyer Free Library and City Hall. They constitute a treasure, and result from the marriage between a vibrant local arts community and a generous program of the Federal Government during a devastating period in American history. Today, we are fortunate to have a group of the murals by Charles Allen Winter, Frederick Mulhaupt and Oscar Anderson on view in Gloucester City Hall .    This program is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, Essex National Heritage Commission, and seARTS sponsors Kristine Fisher and Rick Crangle.

City Hall and The State Fish Pier After The Storm

Gloucester City Hall Restoration Sponsored By Trojan Brand Condoms?

Hey, what do you think about this idea presented to me by lobsterman Mark Ring. He tells me that the shroud that covers the City Hall tower looks like a big green condom when he looks at it from the harbor while hauling traps.

We turn lemons into lemonade and sell naming rights for the City Hall Restoration project to Trojan Brand Condoms. They could market new big huge green condoms that look like the shroud that covers City Hall right now. We could get the expensive project completely taken care of with a few timely banner ads.

Maybe another birth control pill company might sponsor the other side and we could get the sewer project paid for too. With all the media exposure those pharmaceutical companies would surely jump at the chance at that advertising opportunity! Now that’s some outside the box thinking right there!

In case any of you are wondering, no I’m not serious.
