Cape Ann Chamber Hires Matter Communications to Raise Gloucester’s National Profile

Gloucester, Mass. – The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce has hired Matter Communications, an award-winning North Shore public relations firm, to boost Gloucester’s profile as a premier destination and attract tourists and business visitors from around the country who will spend money at local businesses, strengthen the economic climate and improve the quality of life for residents.

“It’s time we stop letting others define us and take the lead in getting the word out about what a beautiful, historic and colorful place Gloucester is,” said Bob Hastings, executive director of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce. “Attracting more leisure and business travelers will strengthen all of our businesses, from tourist-based businesses along the Back Shore and Harbor to the shops and restaurants downtown and throughout the city where visitors shop and eat.”

The public relations effort, which was launched by Gloucester hotel-owners Tracey Muller of Bass Rocks Ocean Inn, Mona Faherty of the Sea Lion Motel and Jan Bordinaro of the Atlantis Oceanfront Inn, will focus on promoting Gloucester but may expand to include other Cape Ann communities.

Matter Communications, based in Newburyport, executes public relations programs on behalf of a broad portfolio of clients in consumer, high-technology and consumer-technology markets. The firm’s clients include national companies such as CVS/pharmacy, Verizon Wireless, Harris Corporation and Lexar. Gloucester residents John McElhenny and Ariane Doud will lead Matter’s PR campaign for Gloucester.

“Gloucester is the most authentic seaport in America and those of us who live here know there is no shortage of fascinating, positive Gloucester stories to tell,” said McElhenny. “There’s an untapped, nationwide market for Gloucester’s entrepreneurial businesses, scenic beauty, cultural richness and maritime identity. PR will give Gloucester a megaphone to tell its stories, attract new visitors and power the local economy.”

Blackburn Challenge on Saturday!

BBCLOGOInfo from Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce:

THE BLACKBURN CHALLENGE

The Blackburn Challenge, held on July 18 this year, is the premier human-powered open-water event on the East Coast. One of the reasons why this event has been recognized as one of the best open water races in America is due to the venue – a 20 mile circumnavigation of Cape Ann Massachusetts – a course that inevitably serves up a wide variety of conditions on the water. The first three or so miles of the race are along the protected and tidal Annisquam River, resulting in something akin to a head race, but with plenty more interesting obstacles to avoid (mooring and navigation buoys, boats, docks, etc.) and a 17 mile open water race after it. Once the river empties into the open waters of Ipswich Bay, the wind strength and direction play a decisive role in determining the conditions of the day, which range from relative calm (it’s never a flat water event) to very rough (staying upright and afloat trump the idea of competition). The last couple of miles from the Dogbar Breakwater at the entrance of Gloucester Harbor to Pavillion Beach, are usually plagued by confused boat wakes from numerous fishing, whale watch and pleasure boats going in all directions. Each year at the Blackburn brings us a very different story, making the event so interesting for open-water aficionados. One thing that thankfully remains the same each year is the fun time after finishing – cold beer, massages, good music and food and the inevitable harrowing stories from the event. The 2009 Blackburn Challenge will be the 23rd running of the event.

All event information may be found at the event website: www.blackburnchallenge.com

Eight fabulous homes in Magnolia will be open to the public on Saturday, November 22, for a self-guided tour from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Many of these beautiful homes will be professionally decorated for the holidays. “Homes for the Holidays” is a program of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce Businesswomen’s Division.

The Businesswomen have given out three $1,000 scholarships since it was created in 2006. The group is hoping to raise enough funds to either increase the scholarship amount or the number of scholarships for 2009.

Tickets are $25.00 in advance and $30.00 on the day of the tour. Actual tickets and a map showing the location of the homes can be picked up on the day of the tour at the Magnolia Library, 1 Lexington Avenue, Gloucester, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Contact the Chamber office to order your advance tickets.
