The first time B.B. King heard Alexis P. SuterĀ singĀ is when she opened for him in NYC. Ā This is what B.B. King said, ā€œItā€™s a rare thing to share the stage with great talent like that young lady.ā€

OnĀ August 8th, only eight weeks from this Saturday, you can experience what he was talking about at the 4th annual Gloucester Blues FestivalĀ at Stage Fort Park. Ā Plus you get to hear 6 other blues legends too, including the guy known as “Hendrix of the Harminica,” Sugar Blue!

You can be on James Montgomery’s new CD

James Montgomery in Boston Herald interview

Tomorrow (5/21), you can be in the audience when the James Montgomery Band records a new live CD right down the road at Beverly’sĀ Larcom Theatre.

This concert (and the CD) will also raise money for James Montgomery’s foundation V is for Veterans, which focuses on helping disabled veterans. Ā James donated most of the tickets to veterans organizations and the VA hospital, but you can still buy tickets here.

James will be joined by David Hull (from Aerosmith & The Joe Perry Project) on bass, Cliff Goodwin (from the Joe Cocker Band) on guitar and Jeff Thompson on drums. Ā Young, rising country stars Whitney Doucet (who sang with Keith Urban) and Lexi James open.

Be sure to scream and shout and clap loud enough to be heard on the CD, so when it comes out you can get one and play it for your friends — fast forwarding through the songs and waiting for the applause, of course.

B.B. King Was a Beacon

Eric Clapton called B. B.Ā King a beacon in his very personal Facebook tribute this morning. Ā See the Rolling Stone article about that here.

Clapton also recommended that anyone not familiar with B. B. King’s work get his “Live at the Regal” album (get it on Amazon here). Ā Here’s a live video of Sweet Little Angle. Ā Not sure this video was recorded at the Regal, but it looks like it’s about the same time period.

Thank you B. B. King for your inspiration, your dedication and your love of music. Ā It has changed us all!

Below is the best tribute I’ve read today. Ā Our friendĀ Victor WainwrightĀ posted it on his Facbook Page this morning.

“To BB’s guitar, Lucille; I would just like you to know how thankful we all are for taking care of our loving mentor, Mr. BB King for all of these years. Night after night BB told us stories of you, and how you were always there through thick and thin. He said you were loving and loyal and never talked back… that you even saved his life. Then night after night we would hear YOU sing, for BB, and also for us… and HOW you sang!!!…. so beautifully, so clear, and with so much soul. When I think of all the audiences you’ve been held in front of, all the lights you’ve shined under, and all of hearts you’ve filed with hope and happiness, I am overwhelmed with awe and inspiration. Thank you for giving my mentor’s hands a place to rest, a place to play, and a place to call home. We will always love you Lucille. Thank you for taking care of our friend, of whom we will miss….. so very, very much. God Bless You. RIP, BB KING.”

In 2014 Lester Young will have been gone 55 years, yet this swinging star shines brightly in the film-in-progress. In the film, Sonny Rollins calls Lester ā€œgodā€, and a god he was for many players who paid their dues at mid-Century. The four-minute trailer includes interviews with Sonny Rollins, Harry Belafonte, Wayne Shorter, B.B. King, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, George Wein, David Amram, Amiri Baraka, Junior Mance, and Gunther Schuller. Collecting these interviews has been an ongoing process for about two years. Here are some pictures from the two-year journey that resulted in this trailer.

As a longtime documentary veteran, my approach uses contemporary places combined with archival film, interviews and music to evoke our shared history. In President of Beauty: The Life and Times of Lester Young, the music and Americaā€™s troubled social history combine to evoke a sense of this much-misunderstood American genius.
