Whenever I’m out doing errands, if time allows, I try to take the “long” way around. The sun was beginning to shine through the storm clouds while the snow was still falling when I stopped to capture the beautiful shadowy and pale lavender-gray hues at Stage Fort Park. The pretty grays lasted only a few moments, but I was so glad to have taken the long way.

Here are some scenes from July 23rd during the 4 Ever Fab Beatles nicely played tribute band evening sponsored by Cape Ann Savings Bank, part of the 2017 line up for the annual Stage Fort Park summer concert series at the Antonio Gentile Bandstand. See the full 2017 schedule here The crowd brought chairs and blankets. What a venue!
We walked to Stage Fort Park from City Hall and could hear 4 Ever Band on the approach from the Boulevard, and later Tablet Rock where we settled in with a picnic dinner. The band sounded great!
Here’s Stage Fort Park in 1901 with it’s grassy meadow expanse.
When you zoom in you can see the big ‘Battery K’- for the Civil War 1861 to 1865 Fort Conant.
And this weekend.
Here’s a gorgeous aerial photo from the 1907 Tablet Rock dedication. There are several modes of transportation by land and sea. The well worn road was ground in from years of steady use, carriage trade and automobiles in this picture. The road is still prominent today.
Note the tents in this one.
Here’s another angle and a closer picture from the ground
John Hays Hammond, Sr. with his daughter Natalie (not looking happily back at the photographer). She pulled back the cord for the reveal. Hammond orchestrated and compelled the press coverage.
I’ll go into more details about the commission with Part II.
Here’s a detail of the plaque in 1907

Came upon an unexpected free concert at the Stage Fort Park bandstand Friday evening. The 195th Army Band from Belfast. Maine. Cheif Warrant Officer/Conductor, Brady Harris lead the group and we enjoyed some great jazz music and lovely lighting. A fish sandwich at the Cupboard made for a neat little impromptu picnic.
The 2009 Summer Concert Series at the Antonio Gentile Bandstand in Stage Fort Park in Gloucester continues Sunday, Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. with The Herb Pomeroy Tribute Concert, featuring Donna Byrne and the Herb Pomeroy Band with Greg Hopkins. The concert includes tunes from the songbook they used for many years.
This is the first time the band has played together since the bandstand concert at Stage Fort Park in August 2007, the weekend after Pomeroy’s death.
“Longtime Herb Pomeroy collaborator Donna Byrne was greatly affected by Herb’s death and she decided to retire soon after his passing,” said concert organizer David Benjamin. “Aug. 9 will be Byrne’s first public performance in quite a while and the first that Herb’s band has played together since 2007.”
The musicians are donating their fees to the Herb Pomeroy Scholarship Fund at Berklee College of Music.
