Sunday drives never get old. Lucky.

The 1950 federal census was released to the public last week after its mandatory 72 year old embargo. It is providing historians, genealogists and the general public an intriguing peek into post WWII life. Here are some samples from Gloucester with some familiar family names. These are families living in the Fort Square area of Gloucester in 1950. Fishing is the predominant industry which may seem obvious, but it’s still neat to see the varieties of occupations within that industry.
If your name fell on a certain line within the census, you were asked additional questions including where your parents were born. In this example, nearly all parents were reported to have been born in Italy. Also seemingly obvious but verification is soothing.
Sometimes you find special notes such as the one you see here that 2 men at a particular address could not be reached for response as they were out fishing and no one knew anything about them or their return (or the neighbors just kept their lips zipped). These records are currently being indexed but are now available for browsing at this Archives link. Enjoy these image examples and your own browsing!

From making MiniLobsterTraps, to winning the GMG Bloody Mary Contest *TWICE*, creating the one and only GMG sign for the dock – and she still finds time to operate her CapeAnnHandywoman business and run herVRBO rental in East Gloucester (a’hem – August dates still open) – Bex’s talents truly know no bounds.
And then she can paint, I mean like PAINT REALLY WELL. C’mon what can’t she do??!??
I went to her Art Opening last weekend and she blew me away yet again. I was so in love with her canvas of steamers that I had to buy a print from Cape Ann Giclee. I understand several canvases sold but rest assured you can pick up a high quality art print online for a very respectable price.
Get your butt over there and check out this amazing body or work which she created in only 3-months. How crazy is that!

News from the office of Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante
Dear Joey
One of my highest priorities as your State Representative has been to create jobs and job training opportunities for the people of Cape Ann. Working with our state, local, non-profit, and corporate partners, we have created pathways to new careers for the people on Cape Ann, which serve as models for communities throughout out Massachusetts. Some of these opportunities include:
These specific programs are in addition to the career counseling services offered by local organizations such as Action Inc. and Wellspring House, as well as the Commonwealth’s MassHire Career Centers.
You will find an announcement in this email about the “HireNow” program, an additional effort the Commonwealth is making statewide to help employers hire and train new workers and to get people back to work in the post-pandemic world.
I’m extremely proud of the work we have done to build these pathways for our students and residents who wish to embark on a career that will help them provide for themselves and their families. I encourage you to share this information should you have a friend or family member on Cape Ann who is looking for a job or a new career.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has launched a new hiring and training employer grant program, “HireNow,” which will help employers quickly hire and train new workers and get more people back to work. The new program provides eligible employers with a $4,000 per employee grant, which can be used to cover training costs or as a signing bonus for new employees. By providing employers with these flexible funds to facilitate quick hiring, the Commonwealth is focusing on addressing continued hiring challenges faced by employers and increasing labor force participation. Employers can learn more about the program and apply at www.mass.gov/hirenow.
HireNow is open to all Massachusetts employers, including both for-profit and non-profit entities (excluding federal, state, and municipal governments). The program aims to address hiring challenges faced by employers that have been brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a recent analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data, there are over 85,000 workers not participating in the labor market compared to pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, employers’ need for workers has continued to increase, with unfilled job postings up 20% compared to pre-pandemic levels and approximately 200,000 open jobs available across the Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth is focused on addressing these challenges through a variety of efforts, including by expanding access and awareness to its existing apprenticeships, incumbent worker training programs, the Career Technical Initiative, and more. Local MassHire Workforce Boards are also expanding resources to match employers and workers with training programs, and regions are hiring new staff members to serve as regional “Market Makers” to connect companies to graduates of new education and training programs starting up in their areas funded by the American Rescue Plan Act. These staff members will be regional points of contact to help match employers’ needs with both job-seekers and the skill-building programs needed to successfully fill open jobs. In addition, MassHire Centers are adding staff to work directly with job seekers who want to enroll in new training programs to gain more skills.
The HireNow program will build on these efforts by providing resources directly to employers that make it possible to immediately hire new employees and provide them with necessary training to fill open roles. The program will be supported by $50 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds.

Hi Joey!
Contacting you regarding a couple of upcoming events in Gloucester. PAWSitive Pantry (www.pawsitivepantry.org) is a nonprofit volunteer group that provides pet food to food pantries and other social service agencies like Meals on Wheels etc, in MA and VT. We work with many animal shelters to distribute the food where it is needed most, and we will be having a pet food drive outside the Eastern Ave Shaw’s in Gloucester on April 24 from 11-2. The food raised will be distributed between our partner Cape Ann Animal Aid and also The Open Door food pantry, which we support with pet food as we are able. There is also a rescue reunion event at Cape Ann Animal Aid on June 18, which we will have a table at to raise awareness and funds for PAWSitive Pantry. This should be a fun community event!

I stumbled upon this while looking through Facebook MarketPlace the other day. It seems that a family gave away their “gramp’s” favorite red velvet armchair and is now really wishing that they hadn’t. I know Gloucester isn’t super close to Haverhill, but I wanted to share here on GMG just in case. Below is what was written in the ad along with the photos that they posted. Here is the link to the ad on Facebook Market Place:
Haverhill: GRANDSON SEEKING GRANDFATHER’S Lost Red Chair. No, NOT selling
Hi everyone! A couple years ago when my Dad passed away we were cleaning out the house on Broadway in Ayers Village, Haverhill MA. Not thinking we put Gramp’s Red velvet armchair out on the front lawn. Now of course we would love to have it, hindsight is 20/20! Just hoping maybe a local might have grabbed the chair and maybe would give me the opportunity to BUY it Back 😊 Feel free to shoot me a message if I’m lucky enough to have found you. *PLEASE SHARE EVERYWHERE* #findtheredchair It was close to Salem NH line.

We happened to be on the Boulevard when we heard the warning bells that the bridge was going up. It was our first outgoing boat parade of the season: Lyndon Johnson, Newfie Star and Hurricane Indie! And so it continues………
