WORLD PREMIERE COMPOSITION PERFORMED AT GLOUCESTER MEETINGHOUSE
The highlight of a program on the international remembrance day of the Holocaust called Yom HaShoah, that was presented in the historic Gloucester Meetinghouse on Middle Street last Sunday, May 1st, was the world premiere of a composition by Leslie Steinweiss called “The Grip of Evil: The Endurance of Hope. It was performed with narration by Judith Black by an ensemble including strings, flute, clarinet, piano and two vocal soloists, conducted by the composer. The event was co-hosted by Temple Ahavat Achim and the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation.

The program had to be postponed two years due to the pandemic. A group of donors from the Temple, led by Eve and Phil Cutter, commissioned the Steinweiss piece in 2019 and Sunday’s performance was the long-anticipated premiere.

Two other original pieces were performed during the event. Stephen Bates presented his composition called “Remembrance of Things Past and Future” for solo clarinet and Abigale Reisman presented her piece “Gedanken” for string trio.

I am a sucker for spring flowers, in particular tulips so I jumped on the opportunity to visit the Spring Bloomfest at the Stevens Coolidge House and Gardens in North Andover recently. Things have changed there since my last visit about 4 years ago, so it took me a minute to realize I had visited this very festival earlier. Honestly I was a little underwhelmed by the spring blossoms but delighted by the rainbow-ribbon themed decorations which seem so very appropriate for a spring day.
The Bloomfest is sold out but soon (May 16) the grounds will be open for normal admission and you might want to give it a try. The house is open to the public and there’s a thorough self guided tour you can take advantage of. Plenty of helpful staff is also available. But if it’s mostly tulips you love, take a stroll on the boulevard!

Rounding out its 2022 Spring Concert Series, the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation will present a concert by the Appleton Consort of orchestral works by J.S. Bach on period instruments, Saturday, May 21, at 8:00 p.m. in the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church at the corner of Middle and Church Streets.
PRESENTING SOME OF BACH’S MOST BEAUTIFUL ORCHESTRAL WORKS
The program features the Orchestral Suite No. 3 (BWV 1086) and the Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 (BWV 1050) plus the Violin Concerto in A minor (BWV 1041) and two Sinfonias (from Cantatas BWV 209 and BWV42). The concert is subtitled “An Evening at the Kaffeehaus,” referring to the Zimmerman coffee house in Leipzig where many of Bach’s great secular works were performed. The Appleton Consort is an ensemble of the finest Baroque instrument players from around the country and is conducted by cellist Mark Dupere, Professor of Music at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. Thursday at the The Rhumb Line: Chris Fitz! . This guy is something else. You should Czech him out if you already don’t know. He writes, he plays awesome gootar and sings like an angel. Chris P. Anzelone, suono buoni, drums. And I’m franticly looking for a suitable fourth person since our regular scheduled blues robot was brutally disfigured in a horrible wine bottle opener accident.
Alas, Alek Razdan joins in on the fun! So stop feeling like you’re living in the Bermuda Triangle and come out to play! hours 7 to 10.
