Sebastian Junger’s Words Resonate

As pictures of the May 13 Sebastian Junger Gloucester 400 event had already been posted, I originally decided to refrain from commenting on the event (thanks for the photos, Scottie!). But then, life intervened in the form of disheartening and heartbreaking news relating (in part) to crimes of hatred and COVID numbers. And I began to reflect back on the words spoken by Mr. Junger and the emotional impact it had on me at the time began to resonate in an even bigger way. He spoke to the importance of human dignity and the fragility of life. These themes hit me right in the heart and then hit again even harder a few days later as I learned of the shootings in Buffalo. Human dignity is essential and life is far too fragile to waste time. Thank you Mr. Junger for the powerful reminder. I am very happy I was able to attend and congratulations to the Gloucester 400 for a great event. (PS May I suggest seeking Sian Heder’s return to Gloucester for a similar event? I expect that’s already been considered ……)

Locals help the locals!! And today, and tomorrow, I need some votes to help bring this potential BBQ Food Trailer to Gloucester!! Check out my profile, all the food photos, and info. Then cast a vote for the win!!! If I win this puppy, I’ll be going straight to the Restaurant Depot for some meat, and heading to the Open Door to make BBQ for our community. Fog and Sun at Good Harbor Beach

The sun and the fog seemed to be playing tag with each other a couple of days ago. It was clear and sunny at my house in Magnolia, but Good Harbor Beach was covered in swiftly moving fog. It was a little eerie, but still totally stunning. A fair spring day to celebrate.

Just like to drop this Prediction I Made Back On Jan 31, 2022

Buy Oil Stock Index. That’s my prediction. Mark the tape. It’s 1358.64 Reasoning: tension with Russia. When Russia invades the Ukraine the US will impose economic sanctions and Russia will counter. Watch the price of oil skyrocket. We’ll probably be paying $5 for gas. Best way to hedge that would be the gains you get in the oil and gas index. That’s my call.

Price on Jan 31, 2022

Here’s your comparison from that exact date-

The Oil and Gas Index ^XOI vs The Nasdaq

^XOI up 22% while the Nasdaq has an 18% loss. That’s a 40% swing. .

Sea Scout Ship 5 – Refillable Water Station Grand Opening – Youth Environmental Summit

Saturday May 21, 2022  11AM – 1PM

Gloucester Harbormaster Building

With the help of a grant from the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and NOAA, Sea Scout Ship 5 has installed a public refillable water station at the Gloucester Harbormaster Building on Harbor loop.  The Grand Opening is Saturday May 21 from 11-1.  In addition to the Grand Opening, there will be local Environmental Organizations on hand to showcase their projects and offer opportunities for our community and youth to get involved.

Ship 5 has been working with the Gloucester Harbormaster since 2017 collecting and documenting trash at public boat landings on Cape Ann. To date Ship 5 crew members have logged over 33,500 items on the Marine Debris Tracker. Plastics are the worst offender. This refillable water station is Ship 5’s attempt at making a change. The trash is not going away, but maybe, with the refillable water station, people will change their habits and stop buying disposable water bottles. Everyone can use the refillable water station and feel they are part of the solution in the attempt to reduce plastics in the ocean.

Per manufacturers recommendations the Refillable Water Station will only be operational in the warmer months, Mid-May through Mid-October.  Ship 5 will continue to maintain the refillable water station throughout the summer. The unit is filtered and has a water meter. Sea Scout Ship 5 will monitor the water usage and will be able to determine the number of potential water bottles that were kept from the ocean.

The Youth Environmental Summit portion of the event is to introduce the community and other youth to local environmental organizations that are available for people to participate in.  There are environmental organizations that want youth involvement but are having trouble finding interested youth.  And there are youth looking for environmental organizations. Ship 5 Youth Environmental Summit is a place to meet.

Sea Scout Ship 5 is chartered by Elks Lodge 892 and is a branch of the Boys Scouts of America BSA
