Geoffrey Baylissโ€™s recent work includes large collaged work and papier-mรขchรฉ sculptures which lend themselves to the viewerโ€™s interpretation.  Playful, imaginative, strange, or referential of classical ruins, the collages and sculptures are active and energetic. Bayliss is not new to collage; but his exploration of papier-mรขchรฉ is an exciting direction. The use of papier-mรขchรฉ goes as far back as 200 AD with the Chinese Han dynasty; in Europe, it was introduced c.1725 as an alternative to plaster or carved wood in architecture. Bayliss earned a degree in architecture from Columbia University; his current interest in the medium of papier-mรขchรฉ aligns well with his understanding of architectural elements and flourishes.

About the artist.

Geoffrey Bayliss, a native of Gloucester, holds a BA in architecture from Columbia University. He has studied with artist Celia Eldridge, sculptor John Bozarth, printmaker Coco Berkman, and artist Charlotte Roberts. His work is held in numerous private collections in the US. Butter was one of the first adoptions in May, and she is in good company with 107 adoptions that took place last month! Butter’s new family writes: We are so grateful for the opportunity to welcome Butter to our family of seven; including three young children (ages 5,7,7) and 2 small senior dogs (both age 11)! We adopted Butter at the beginning of May 2022, and in June 2022 Butter joined us on the ultimate family road trip: Massachusetts to Arizona and back in our minivan! We stayed in dog-friendly hotels, Airbnb’s, and we even tent camped at the Grand Canyon for several days! She was warmly welcomed at the Arch in St. Louis, the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, The Painted Desert & Petrified Forest, Washington DC, and many other dog friendly stops along our route.

We could not have asked for a better road trip dog! She was even named “Pet of the Week” at one of the Hilton Home2Suites that we stayed at on the East Coast. When she’s not on the road, Butter just loves to play, go for walks, and snuggle. We are so happy she chose us!

What a grand adventure! Happy tails (and happy trails!) to Butter and her new family.

Are you looking for a companion for your current pooch? Moose is looking for a home with another dog to show him that life is not so scary! Moose has lived with teenagers and another dog, and is a sweet loving dog, but he needs the confidence of another dog in the home to show him the ropes, as he spooks easily. Once settled, he is a fast learner, loves to play, and loves his people.

Meet Annie
Annie is a beautiful black cat who loves to walk around and show off her lovely singing voice! Annie lived in a foster home with other cats and a dog, and got along with everyone. Her foster describes her as an active gal who is always on the move, and while she enjoys being around you, she isn’t fond of being picked up. However, given time to get used to her people, she is sure to warm up quick.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE 10 YEARS CAN MAKE!

Rhoda (above) was one of the first animals adopted from our new Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter in June 2012. Her adopter, Carrie, visited our shelter and left with her faithful companion, whom she named Baylee.

โ€‹Since cutting the ribbon on our Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter ten years ago this June, we have saved 12,205 homeless cats and dogs! In the ten years prior to 2012, we saved 5,723 animals. We doubled our lifesaving capacity and are so grateful to all of those who supported this vision and continue to make this work possible.

We were so thrilled to visit Beeman Memorial School this month with the adorable miss Maple! The 2nd and 3rd graders at the school spent the afternoon making 3 LARGE boxes of cat and dog toys for the shelter animals. The students also raised over $400 between a coin collection drive and donations from one student’s friends and family to benefit the shelter Animals.

We are always excited to meet with Cape Ann’s youth, and we love seeing community-minded students making a difference! Thank you for being a friend to the animals, Beeman!

This week we have Vincente Minnelliโ€™s Some Came Running July 1st, 3rd & 6th!

Frank Sinatra stars in this chronicle of postwar disillusionment and small-town hypocrisy, shrewdly directed by Vincente Minnelli. In one of his most textured portrayals, Sinatra is Dave Hirsh, an embittered ex-GI who returns to his Midwestern hometown to write the next chapter of his life. Heโ€™s torn between the โ€œrespectableโ€ influences of his social-climbing brother and schoolteacher love interest, and the decadence embodied by gambler Dean Martin (brilliant in his first pairing with Sinatra) and floozy Shirley MacLaine (in her breakout role). A widescreen classic that canโ€™t be missed on the big screen!

Summer Concerts At The Bandstand Are Back!

EZEKIELโ€™S WHEELS KLEZMER BAND PERFORMS AT MUSIC ON MEETINGHOUSE GREEN FRIDAY, JULY 15
Internationally-acclaimed Klezmer ensemble brings high energy performance to free Friday evening concert at the corner of Middle and Church Streets, July 15 at 6:00 p.m.

Praised by critics both individually and collectively for their virtuosity and passion for Klezmer music, the five musicians of Ezekielโ€™s Wheels Klezmer Band return for the seventh season of Music on Meetinghouse Green. Their repertoire includes traditional instrumental renditions and original compositions of Klezmer-inspired music as well as songs in Yiddish and English. A favorite of local audiences, they have played at the Kennedy Center and Yidstock, and continue to build an international following with their performance at the Third Biennial International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam where they received the Audience Pick Award. The five performers feature Abigale Reisman on violin and vocals; Jonathan Cannon on violin; Kristen Lamb on double bass and vocals; Nat Seelen on clarinet, and Pete Fanelli on trombone. An accomplished violinist and composer, Abigale Reisman is the music director at Temple Ahavat Achim in Gloucester.

Free-will donations will support the concertโ€™s featured local non-profit partner Backyard Growers, connecting people and communities through access to healthy food. The eveningโ€™s food vendor is the Causeway.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Now entering its seventh season, Music on Meetinghouse Green features nine free Friday evening concerts from July 8 to September 9. Performances are held on the Green and feature great music, favorite foods from local vendors, and a different North Shore non-profit organization featured each week through free-will donations from the audience. Concerts begin at 6:00 p.m. and conclude at 8:30 p.m. Some chairs will be provided and audience members are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. Picnic with delicious local food from our vendors or bring your own. Performances are handicapped accessible and parking on the Green is limited to persons with disabilities.

ABOUT THE GLOUCESTER MEETINGHOUSE FOUNDATION
Founded in 2015, the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation is dedicated to preserving the landmark building as a civic hub, entertainment venue, and community center. In addition to its work to preserve the historic 1806 Meetinghouse, GMF is currently raising funds to restore Meetinghouse Green. The GMF has received a $130,000 grant from the Community Preservation Act and a $2,000 grant from the Essex Heritage Partnership Grant Program towards a total project goal of $340,000. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2023.
