GMGI Updates from the Harbor: July 2022

The Academy Class of 2022 Sets SailThe soon-to-be graduates arrived at the Cape Ann Museum on June 23rd with a well-earned sense of pride and confidence. And rightfully so โ€“ the group of 15 students had recently completed seven months of hands-on lab work, three months of a paid-internship at prestigious laboratories, and many (12 of the 15) had already confirmed employment for after graduation.

The Academyโ€™s sixth graduating class was a cohort of firsts: the first to utilize the new biomanufacturing laboratory…click here to read more.

GMGI Waives all Biotech Academy Tuition for 2022-2023
โ€œThe Big Waiveโ€ a gift to Cape Annโ€™s young adults

Gloucester Biotechnology Academy has announced a new financial structure to support young adultsโ€™ investment in their futures. Through the generous support of donors, tuition and fees will be waived in their entirety for the Academyโ€™s incoming class of 2023. In addition, qualifying students will receive stipends to help support their living expenses.ย ย Click here to read the full press release.

The Inaugural Joseph J. Rosa Impact Award

In a special moment during the recent Academy graduation Dr. John Doyle stepped up to the podium to introduce The Joseph J. Rosa GMGI Impact Award, which will be given annually in recognition of a volunteer who best exemplifies dedication to the mission of GMGI and the Academy. John went on to describe Joeโ€™s storied history with GMGI, from the early conversations around GMGIโ€™s founding in the Rosaโ€™s kitchen to Joeโ€™s dedication to each of the past six Academy classes.

โ€œJoe, there has been no one more influential at the Academy since its inception than you,โ€ John said. โ€œYou have had a profound effect on both our students and educators.โ€

Joe went on to accept the award and express his gratitude at the podium. In true to his character, Joe turned the focus to the impact of the Academy. โ€œWe should all be extremely proud,โ€ he said. โ€œThis kind of school does not go on anywhere else as far as Iโ€™m aware, and the success of the students in getting jobs almost immediately, that doesnโ€™t happen anywhere.โ€

GMGI is grateful for the unparalleled commitment and dedication Joe has shown the organization and is delighted to honor that commitment each year going forward with theย Joseph J. Rosa GMGI Impact Award.

The GMGI Science Forum Returns

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the GMGI Science Forum returned this spring for an in-person, daylong symposium on the latest advances in marine genomics. Guests gathered at Gloucester High School on May 15 to hear from a lineup of speakers that included scientists from Stony Brook University, The Ohio State University, Pacific Northwest Research Institute, University of Connecticut, Boston University, UMass Amherst, GMGI, the J. Craig Venter Institute and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science.

Guests enjoyed casual conversation before the morning session began, focusing on harmful algal blooms and diseases that impact bivalves — including the contagious cancer that affects some clams. After a networking lunch, the talks resumed with a focus on viruses in the global oceans and the diversity of life in deep-sea habitats, population genetics of endangered sea turtles, leveraging genomic tools to understand coral bleaching and the role that sponges play in nutrient cycling on coral reefs. GMGIโ€™s Donald G. Comb Science Director, Dr. Andrea Bodnar, emceed the conference, and was thrilled to have the event back in GMGIโ€™s rotation. โ€œSince 2015, GMGI has built a reputation for convening thought leaders in genomic research, and Iโ€™m delighted that we are in a position to continue that tradition,โ€ Dr. Bodnar said. โ€œItโ€™s an inspiring event for both our research team and guests alike.โ€

After the final talk concluded, guests gathered downtown at the Gloucester House for a cocktail hour on the harbor.

Thank you to the Company of Biologists and the Cummings Foundation for the sponsorship of the 2022 GMGI Science Forum.ย

GMGI Creates Opportunity

Earlier this year, GMGI launched a fundraising appeal that focused on three young women at GMGI and their varying paths into the dynamic world of biotech and marine genomics. Reanna, Lizzie, and Kate may be in different stages of their journeys but have all found success at GMGI.ย Click here to view the appeal and consider supporting GMGI and the many opportunities we create.

This spring, GMGI researchers ventured out of the lab and on to the water.ย Left: Senior research associate Jennifer Polinski collects samples with Ocean Alliance.ย Right: Research associate Dylan Comb joined DMH for their annual coastal trawl survey.ย

Osprey Feeding in Magnolia

I was startled to see something flashing atop a dead tree in our backyard marsh in Magnolia so I dashed outside with the camera to find this osprey enjoying its catch. It seemed to be wiggling a bit which is why the sun reflected and drew my attention. We do see osprey once in a while out here but not too often so this was fun to observe. The action seemed to draw curious smaller birds to check it out. I did not have a clue what kind of fish that might be so I consulted my favorite fish expert…Finn…who told me it’s probably a pogie. Thank you Finn for the assist!

Savour Saturday Wine tasting – Mexican Wines

THIS SATURDAY, July 23, 2 – 4 pm

COMPLIMENTARY

FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH MAX MURPHY, OWNER TOZI IMPORTS

We at Savour are very excited to introduce you to some incredible wines from Mexico with the owner of the importing and distribution company, Tozi Imports. But first, a great story . . . Tozi was born out of love. First, sommelier Max Murphy fell in love with a woman from Mexico. When he visited Mexico with her, he fell in love with the wine. Max and Kenya married in Mexico, and Max chose Mexican wines to serve at the wedding. When Max’s family and friends clamored to buy the wedding wines back home, the idea for a wine importing business was born. Come meet Max and let him introduce you to some of his favorite wines.

The first three wines come from the state of Querรฉtaro in Central Mexico, 6,500 feet above sea level. This is the southernmost wine region in the Northern Hemisphere. The area is extremely hot, dry, and has a 40-degree diurnal shift. Central Mexican red wines tend to have a lower ABV (alcohol by volume) and higher acid than wines from Baja.ย This makes them wonderful food wines!

NV Viรฑa Doรฑa Dolores Brut Reserva

Varietals: 50% Macabeu, 50% Xarel-lo

Made using the traditional champagne method, this lively sparkling wine sits for 18 to 24 months on the lees, followed by 1 year in the riddling rack and 1 year of bottle aging. It has strong stone fruit and tropical fruit notes with a crisp, dry finish. $17.99 โ€“ great bargain for such a labor-intensive wine!

2019 Vivante Tinto

Varietal: Malbec

Fermented in stainless steel and immediately bottled, this wine has notes of bright red cherries, plums, and hibiscus. It is fruit forward and very barbeque friendly. Can be served slightly chilled. $14.99

2018 Viรฑa Doรฑa Dolores Cuatro Regiones Red Blend

Varietals: 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Tempranillo, 20% Merlot, 10% Syrah, 10% Malbec, 3% Marselan

Aged for 16 months in American and French Oak, this wine is meant to represent all of Central Mexico. The winemakers source grapes from the four wine-producing states (hence Cuatro Regiones) of Querรฉtaro, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, and Zacatecas. This is a medium to full-bodied red blend with complex flavors of dark red and black fruits, leather, and tobacco. $17.99

These next three wines come from the Valle De Guadalupe in Baja. This is Mexico’s version of Napa Valley and is where 80% of all Mexican wine is produced. There are more than 150 wineries, and the valley sits 15 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean with low hills to the west and high hills to the east. It is classified as a Mediterranean climate and sits at a point where two tectonic plates meet — the soil is a mix of sand, clay, and granite.

2017 Vinos Lechuza Chardonnay

Varietal: Chardonnay

Fermented in stainless steel, this wine sits for 9 months on the lees. It also undergoes partial malolactic fermentation, resulting in a pleasant creamy texture, without the use of oak. The lees provide brioche notes along with honeydew melon, pineapple, and green apple. $34.99

2018 EmevรฉArmonia de Tintos Red Blend

Varietals: 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot, 25% Shiraz

This wine sees 12 months in new French oak. Full-bodied with notes of blackberries, blueberries, and plums, it also has a pleasing vanilla finish and is very crowd friendly. $29.99

2019 Monte Xanic Cabernet Sauvignon

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Aged for 12 months in second use (more neutral) French oak barrels, this is a medium to full-bodied Cabernet with notes of plum, cassis, and baking spice with soft, velvety tannins.ย $29.99

Now, a word about beer . . .

While youโ€™re in the store, take a look at some of the new beers we have for summer: a citrusy saison from Cambridge Brewing Company called Working Class Hero; an NEIPA from Riverwalk Brewing called Hit of Haze, and one of the best Belgian style white beers this side of Belgium, Allagash White — made with coriander and curaรงao orange peel, itโ€™s lovely on a hot summer day! Ann Cortissoz, our new beer expert, is now making our selections and can help you find exactly the right choice for the beach, a summer gathering on the deck, or a barbeque in the backyard. What a great way to celebrate this joyful season on glorious Cape Ann!
