The Studio Closes Out the Season with a Fundraiser for Chef’s Furry Friend – 10/30

An addition to The Studio’s end-of-season Halloween event on October 30: Sous Chef Sal Valenti of Peabody recently got an adorable dog, Trager AKA “T-Roy” (photo attached), who has quickly become his best friend and family. At only ten months, Trager must have an unexpected surgery on his leg. The Studio is rallying around Chef Sal and little Trager to help pay for the required $8,000 surgery by auctioning off a baseball signed by recent Hall of Fame inductee, David “Big Papi” Ortiz, as well as a signed Patriots jersey by running back, LeGarrette Blount. Both items will be available for bidding onsite on October 30 and all funds will be donated directly to Trager’s surgery expenses.

Whenever we go to the TDGarden we park in Charlestown and walk past the marina, through the park, and under the Zakim to head to the game. It was a rainy walk the other night, but super pretty.

I recently realized October 2022 marks our 5th anniversary as Good Morning Gloucester contributors! Time really does fly. I have been reflecting on how far I have come along as a contributor and podcast participant and I want to thank each of you for your support and especially for your comments. Sometimes we meet you in our daily routines and you kindly comment on the posts or the podcast. We really appreciate that! It’s always gratifying to know someone is out there listening or reading. Thanks also to those who take the extra steps to comment on Facebook, the podcast or the blog. It means more to each of the contributors than you might realize.

Special thanks to our Boss Joey and all the Castaways: Chris, Nichole, Scottie, Paul, Drew! And to the other contributors especially Donna, Nichole, Paul H., James, Manny and others past and present.

To celebrate the randomness of everyday life here on Cape Ann, here’s today’s offering. An apparently abandoned cute little Adirondack chair sitting roadside near the Good Harbor Beach footbridge just begged to be part of the blog’s history. And Keith and Aretha joined in the fun. As you may know, Keith is a wreath (follow #KeithIsAWreath on Instagram) and Aretha is his companion. They like to have their photos taken around town for fun.

Put on your dancing shoes and head to Blue Collar Lobster for a light hearted night of cocktails and dancing with the band and special guests. Funds from the evening’s festivities will directly support free, public programming across the city and throughout 2023!

Video: Cape Ann Residents Rescue Baby Cormorant

Last night (Oct 17) a makeshift surgical team — including two nurses — rescued a baby cormorant that had become entangled in some fishing hooks, line and sinker.  The cormorant was found on the edge of the road at the corner of Beach and Granite at 8:30pm in Rockport. It was barely able to walk because the fishing line was wrapped around the bird’s wing and right leg. One hook was in his foot and one in his wing. Part of the fishing line had grown into the wing, but it was not infected  After more than 30 minutes of “surgery,” the cormorant’s right foot and wing were freed from two hooks, some line and a large sinker.  It was then released at Back Beach where it immediately walked to the water and swam away.  Surgical team members included Mike & Paula Giblin, Elizabeth Fox and Ken Nolet of Rockport, and Peter Rosamilia of Gloucester; cell phone video was taken by Anne Jones, who also did some timely Cormorant handling research.

GLOUCESTER MEETINGHOUSE FOUNDATION PRESENTS AN AFTERNOON OF SILENT MOVIES WITH LIVE ACCOMPANIMENT
BY KEYBOARD ARTIST JEFF RAPSIS OCTOBER 30 AT 3:00 P.M.

Bring the whole family to the Gloucester Meetinghouse at the corner of Church and Middle Streets on Sunday, October 30
for an entertaining afternoon of classic silent movies with live keyboard accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis.

Children and adults of all ages will be delighted with the musical interpretation of keyboard artist Jeff Rapsis as he infuses new life
into three works from the early era of cinematic history. Rapsis has entertained audiences of all ages across New England with his
fresh interpretation of this lost technique. The three films were selected for their wide appeal featuring non-stop action and knee-slapping
comedy routines. Presented on a large screen with live keyboard accompaniment, the afternoon of silent films offers a unique artform
and an unforgettable experience for all.

Tickets are available online at www.gloucestermeetinghouse.org or at the door. General seating $15; students with ID $5; children under 12 free.

The three films to be shown on October 30 are:

The Haunted House (1921)
Buster Keaton stars in this film about a gang of robbers, a crooked bank manager, and the bank’s teller who converge on a booby-trapped house
decorated to appear haunted in order to fool the authorities. A series of uproarious encounters between the antagonists leaves the audience
wondering who the true villain really is.

The Floorwalker (1916)
Charlie Chaplin stars in his signature role as The Tramp in this early comedy. The antics of an unruly customer (Chaplin) foil the crooked manager’s
plans to make off with the store’s cash. This film features sight gags galore with an early version of an attempt to run down the up escalator and one
character “mirroring” the movements of another.

The Kid (1921)
Written, directed, and produced by Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin plays the role of The Tramp who cares for a young boy whose mother left him for adoption.
The three lives become intertwined in this heartwarming story of reconciliation and reunion.

ABOUT THE GLOUCESTER MEETINGHOUSE FOUNDATION
Founded in 2015, the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation is dedicated to preserving the landmark building as a civic hub, entertainment venue, and
community center. In addition to its work to preserve the historic 1806 Meetinghouse, GMF is currently raising funds to restore Meetinghouse Green.
The GMF has received a $130,000 grant from the Community Preservation Act and a $2,000 grant from the Essex Heritage Partnership Grant Program
towards a total project goal of $340,000. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2023.

I love this annual tradition. The Essex Scarecrow building tradition is in full swing. You can click on this map and see where they are to take a drive and view them all. Update on Previous Mobil Station on Essex Ave

Many of you have noticed the property at 65-73 Essex Ave in Gloucester has been closed and actions have been taken to begin renovations as you see here. We understand that Fresh Fields Gloucester LLC will be opening up a new Reverie 73 dispensary after razing the two existing buildings. Previously released information indicated this property would retain the gas station and convenience store and we don’t have updated information on that to this point.
