WINES

Schoenheitz Cremant d’Alsace Brut, Alsace, France

Varietal: Pinot Noir, Auxerrois, Alc. 12%

During the Middle Ages the vineyards of Wihr-au-Val belonged to the famous Habsbourg and Ribeaupierre families and already had a reputation for producing quality wines. Unfortunately, the battles of WWII devastated the area. During the 1970s, Henri Schoenheitz senior, passionate about history and in love with the area where he was born, undertook the rebirth of this lovely vineyard. Slowlyhe retraced the original contours of the vineyards at Wihr-au-Val. Preparing the soil and replanting the steep hillsides was a difficult undertaking and is still pursued by Henri junior, assisted by his wife, Dominique. Henri and Dominique, both fresh from oenology school in 1980, took over and became the only independent winemakers in the village. In 1995, their wine won its first award. Since then, the awards have multiplied: Guide Bettane & Desseauve, Guide Hachette, Le Point, Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, James Suckling, International Wine Challenge, Decanter Award… In 2015, the winery was selected for the first time in the Guide Vert des meilleurs vins de France by La Revue du Vin de France. In 2020, it joined the very exclusive club of starred estates. The Cremant d’Alsace Brut has a complex nose which opens with fruity notes (wild strawberries, mirabelle plums, quinces) then develops towards more toasted notes. Beautiful effervescence is followed on the palate from the flavors present on the nose. Serve as an aperitif. Pairs well with cold or hot seafood starters and white meats. $21.99

Domaine Marcel Deiss Alsace Complantation, France

Varietals: Alsace white (13 different varietals) AOC, Alc.13.5%

Located in Bergheim next to Ribeauvillé, in the heart of the Grand Cru area, the Marcel Deiss estate was founded in 1947. Currently managed by Mathieu Deiss with the help of his father, Jean-Michel, the estate aims for quality based on terroir rather than on cloned grape varieties; the winemakers adhere to biodynamic methods of very low yields and agroforestry. This wine comes exclusively from the vineyards of Domaine Marcel Deiss. It is made with the 13 varieties of grapes that represent the Alsace AOC, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Sylvaner, and Muscat. The wine expresses the depth of the Alsatian terroir. Notes of lemon, white flowers, pineapple, and yellow peach mix on the nose. On the palate it is lively and remarkably fruity, full and ripe but still fresh. Pairs well with a wide variety of dishes, including seafood, chicken, and pork. $27.99

Meyer-Fonné Gentil d’Alsace, Alscace, France

Varietal: 50% Riesling, 25% Muscat, 20% Pinot Blanc, 5% Sylvaner and Pinot Gris, Alc.12.5%

Alsace is primarily known for its single-varietal bottlings, each of its native grape varieties having its own aromatic signature and distinctive balance on the palate. But what if one were to blend a number of them together into the same cuvée, creating a sort of super-Alsatian? Enter Gentil, a traditional blend originating in the 1920s that captures all the magic of each component part. These bracing, perfumed whites are the ideal choice to kick off an evening and a surprising match to untold types of cuisine.A fragrant blend of mostly Riesling and Muscat, Félix Meyer’s organically grown Gentil is crisp and lean and works like a reset button for your palate. A standout value, it has everything going for it—a bit of pear, delicate mimosa flower, and an undeniable whiff of coriander on the nose. It is versatile, friendly, and thirst-quenching. Pairs well with shellfish, grilled fish, spicy foods. $19.99

Pat D’s Photo On Display in Essex

I was pleased to be informed that my photo CB on Essex Marsh won 2nd place in the recent Essex in Bloom photo contest, so thanks for your votes and support! The 15 photos are still on display along the street in Essex so if you have the opportunity, take a look! My photo is near the crosswalk by CK Pearl and easily accessible from the parking lot. I love this photo especially because it was the first one I took with my crystal ball (CB) and our friends at Cape Ann Giclee assisted in making it even more beautiful. This photo set me on the path to sharing my photography more widely.

Pat D’s Photos will be at the June 17th Magnolia Block party from 5-9 PM so stop by if you can. You can also follow the adventures on Facebook at Pat D’s Photos and Adventures, where you’ll get the first news of new products as well as watch along on our adventures. Some of my work can also be found at Maritime Gloucester, Pauline’s Gifts, Sweats of New England and (most recently) Made with Luve new on Main St.
