Edward Hopper sketched Columbia likely in Gloucester in 1923, and the Britannia

Edward Hopper’s sketch of the fast schooner Columbia was completed in Gloucester in 1923 or later: Columbia was built in Essex and launched in 1923. The Hopper drawing annotated ‘Britania’ is a misspelling. The Prince of Wales (future King Edward) commissioned the racing yacht (a cutter) Britannia in 1892. The racer was retooled several times.

Hopper traveled in the UK and Gloucester. It’s likely he saw Columbia in person in 1923 or on later Gloucester visits. If not he saw both boats reproduced in print and in the news. Gorgeous yacht and race photography was popular and circulated widely especially as marine photography advanced.

For Britannia, see British photographers, Alfred Beken and his son, Frank, who settled and worked in Cowes on the Isle of Wight from 1888 on.

For the fishing schooner Columbia see Boston photojournalist, Leslie Jones, collection Boston Public Library.

After 1923, news in the the 1920s: Britannia was racing regularly and Columbia and her crew disappeared in 1927.

Schooner Fest Friday Greet The Fleet

Thank you Maritime Gloucester for including us in the Greet the Fleet sail aboard the Schooner Ardelle! It was a beautiful afternoon to be on the water to greet Adventurer, Denis Sullivan, Strombus, Tyrone, Resolute and American Eagle. We saw the Schooner Adventure out there as well with our very own Donna Ardizzoni on board. These are only a bare fraction of the wonderful sights we saw. Shout out to former Gloucester resident Gayle Anderson-Gram and her husband Bob Gram currently of Rhode Island who make annual trips to Gloucester for SchoonerFest!

Jeff Mangarpan With Some Nice Things To Say

Hey Joey

Growing up in Pigeon Cove was truly magical.  We had the quarries and Dogtown behind us with the Tool Company hammers and ocean in front. Riding our bikes ‘in to town’ was a big adventure.

Seeing the Motif was never casual.  Its red siding dotted with colorful buoys sitting stop the harbor reassured me that I belonged to Cape Ann and the sea.  It’s grip has never let go.

In the early 70’s our neighbor had secured MOTIF 1 on his Mass plate and even made it into the GD Times when he did do.  I thought that was pretty cool, even as a kid.

After moving to CA in the 90’s I decided I was going to have the same plate.  I researched and found that it was available despite the fact that one of the guy’s sons lives down in Laguna Beach.

So thanks for the sticker.  It will sit proudly next to the MOTIF 1 plate and my UMass alumni sticker. Once a townie always a townie.
