This week the sunsets are amazing and beautiful.  The sunsets have also been changing with color.  We are so lucky to live here.  Every night there is a group of people who walk Shore Road in awe of the sunsets.  Very grateful

We always enjoy it when Harry, co-owner of Main Street Wines, comes to Savour to pour his selections. Main Street specializes in quality wines at a reasonable price, many of which are organic, fully natural, or biodynamically farmed.

Champagne- Jean-Noël Haton Blanc de Blancs, Champagne, France

Varietal: Chardonnay Alc. 12%

Founded in 1928 by cooper Octave Haton, Champagne Hatonis is located in the Marne Valley, 7 kilometers from Epernay in the village of Damery. An independent family owned Champagne house, they have a deep history in Champagne dating back to the 1610s as grape growers. Father and  son Jean-Noël and Sébastien (third and fourth generation), currently own 25 hectares of vineyards, manage an additional 15 from viticulture to vinification, and purchase grapes for a volume equal to 20 hectares across Champagne, including Grands Crus and Premiers Crus. Champagne Haton was one of the first Recoltant Manipulant producers (a type of producer that tills the soil, plants their own vines, grows the grapes, and bottles and sells their own Champagne) and continues to be one of the top 10 most important winegrowing families still managing their own domain. The House has been sustainable (certified HVE 3) since 2021, in their vineyards. The Haton Blanc de Blancs pours a pale golden color, with a wide, continual string of fine bubbles. The nose is floral and refined, revealing aromas of rose and acacia blossom. With aeration, citrus fruits (mandarin- orange), cinnamon, a few notes of dried flowers, roasted coffee and a hint of toast emerge. It is fresh and creamy on the palate, well-balanced with pleasing floral and honeyed notes, and a gentle and elegant finish. Serve as an aperitif. Pairs well with salty snacks, seafood. $ .44.99

Clendenen Family Vineyards, Santa Maria, California 

Jim Clendenen had already collected countless honors and accolades for his Au Bon Climat wines when he created the Clendenen Family Vineyards label in 2000 as a vehicle to bring many of his most artisanal and experimental wines to market. All are produced in very small quantities; many of these wines are crafted from unique varietals grown primarily on his organically farmed Le Bon Climat and Rancho La Cuna Vineyards. The project has expanded to include special plantings at Bien Nacido Vineyard as well. While two of the jewels from this project are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, he also makes benchmark examples of Nebbiolo, Tocai Friulano, Viognier, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc, and a Syrah/Viognier blend. This week, Harry is pouring three wines from Clendenen.

Clendenen 2020 Pinot Gris

Varietal: Pinot Gris, Alc.13.5%

The Pinot Gris has stone fruit aromas and a rich, full body with juicy peach and nectarines notes and a spicy ginger note on the finish. Pairs well with sushi, salads and fresh vegetables, shellfish. $27.99

Clendenen 2021 Mondeuse Rosé

Varietal: Mondeuse Alc.12%

This charming wine has just a hint of blush color and shows delicate aromas of ripe wild strawberry and pomegranate. It is light, crisp and dry with a really subtle fruit character and flinty notes. Truly elegant. Try this wine as an aperitif, or match with Parisian chicken salad, quiche Lorraine, or sushi. $19.99

Clendenen Mondeuse

Varietals: Mondeuse Alc. 13.5%

This French varietal creates a delicious, juicy red wine with deep color and a berry/peppery flavor. Blackberry, plum, pomegranate appear up front with nuances of clove and black olive on the back palette helping to create a savory and food-friendly wine. Its intriguing fruit character makes it enjoyable now. Enjoy with grilled burgers, hearty stews or cassoulet.$22.99

Dead Canyon Ranch 2019 Red Blend, Horse Heaven Hill, Washington

Varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon Alc. 14%

For over 125 years, Mercers have been stewards of the same land in Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills. In 1972, they planted the first wine grapes in the acclaimed Horse Heaven Hills AVA. Now, their vineyards span 12,000 acres along the Columbia River. Dead Canyon Vineyard bears the name of the topographical landmark on which it resides. Grapes are planted along both canyon edges, about three miles south of the original Mercer family farmstead. The site has two distinct aspects because it is planted on both canyon edges, and thus has both a north and south face. The Dead Canyon Ranch Cab Sauvignon has notes of smoke, black currant, green pepper, oak, vanilla and plum. Sweet matchstick pastries and plum flavors follow, backed by tightly coiled, slightly dry tannins. Full body, velvety tannins, a subtle blackberry finish. Will benefit from a short decant if drinking in the near term. Pairs well with grilled beef or pork, lamb chops, meaty stews. $19.99

Chateau Courbian Medoc, Bordeaux, France

Varietals: 65% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon Alc.14

The Médoc appellation comprises a wide variety of soil types, including sand, gravel, clay, stones and pebbles. The wines of the Médoc are all produced by blending different grape varieties. Located in Begadan, on the west side of the Medoc peninsula, the Château Courbian is owned by Marie-Christine and

Claude Greteau. The estate takes its name from the hamlet of Courbian, dating back from the 18th century. Originally in polyculture (cereals), the vineyard has been the only focus for the past hundred years, producing a single cuvée.This wine offers a bouquet of red and black berries currant with roasted coffee notes and a touch of vanilla. The palate is full with a velvety texture and round tannins. Pairs well with roast lamb, venison, duck. $ 24 .99

Ben Duckworth- now a man

What’s crazy is when the Duckworths moved here Ken and/or Nichole would come down to buy lobsters for the restaurant and introduced me to each baby as they were born.

This morning at 5:00AM The F/V Tight Lines shows up for bait with a new crew member. Looked like any other new backman on the stern of a lobsterboat that pulls up to the dock.

Only this time the new backman was none other than an adult backman-Ben Duckworth, the little baby that Ken and Nichole brought down the dock when they were picking up lobsters for the restaurant way back when.

Seemed like yesterday.

Step into the fascinating life of John Hays Hammond Jr. with our lecture titled “The Expansive Life of John Hays Hammond Jr”. We are excited to have Caleb McMurphy, the Director of Visitor Services and Education at Hammond Castle join us at the Museum to present.
What do you know about the man behind the Castle?
As one of American’s foremost inventors he has 120 patents in the field of wireless radio ship and weaponry control systems becoming know as “the Father of Remote Control”. He had over 700 patents in total.
He met Thomas Edison at age 12 and they remained in contact throughout Edison’s life. He was also friends with Nicola Tesla who was known to visit Hammond at the castle. He was a skilled pianist and organist, and a passionate collector of art and antiques, and his castle houses a vast collection of medieval and Renaissance artifacts.
Hammond was also deeply interested in the occult. His marriage to Gloucester artist Evelyn Fenton in 1925 introduced an abiding interest in spiritualism. Seances, and reportedly many an all-night party were held at Hammond Castle. The Hammonds maintained deep connections to the equally successful and avant garde circle at Eastern Point.
John Hays Hammond Jr. was a true Renaissance man, with a remarkable range of talents and interests. His inventions had a profound impact on the world, and his legacy continues to inspire innovators today.
Be sure to join us for a one-hour exploration of the seeming contradictory facets and periods of the Hammonds’ life. Our lecture will be preceded by half-hour social with light refreshments at 3:30.

Working with DPW, Ann Gilardi Johnson and Generous Gardeners design enhancements have been incorporated all along the Boulevard. See the plans and read more about that scope in a prior GMG post from 2017 here. The new flower beds and curved bench design astride the Fisherman at the Wheel replaced bench pairs and barrels long present.

The Open Door Thanksgiving Food Drive is this Saturday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Donate and help stock the shelves at The Open Door to feed local people through the holidays and beyond. Participating locations include:

“The Thanksgiving Food Drive is more than just a collection of food. It’s an act of kindness given by a community that cares,” President and CEO Julie LaFontaine said. “Donating an extra couple boxes of your favorite breakfast cereal, pancake mix, or a can of coffee is one tangible way to establish traditions of gratitude and show support for our neighbors not only at the holidays but in the tough winter months ahead.” 

Instead of holiday fixings which have already been secured for the Thanksgiving Baskets, The Open Door is encouraging items of shelf-stable breakfast foods this year, including cereal, oatmeal, coffee, tea, maple syrup, pancake mix, waffle mix, 100% fruit juice, and granola bars. Donors are asked to please avoid donating anything in a glass container.  

Already in 2023, The Open Door has seen more than a 28% increase in visits to its food pantries over 2022. The nonprofit’s kitchen also prepares approximately 3,000 meals each week.  

The Open Door will also be accepting clothing donations only at its thrift store, Second Glance, with no appointment needed on Saturday, Nov. 18. Donations at Second Glance help raise revenue for hunger-relief programs of The Open Door.  

Turkey for Every Table 

Also on Saturday, Nov. 18, The Open Door kicks off its Holiday Basket program. Hundreds of local people will pick-up everything they need to make a special Thanksgiving meal at home, at no cost, at a drive-thru on Emerson Avenue. Holiday Baskets will continue to be distributed by The Open Door right up until the day before Thanksgiving. Holiday Baskets are also available for the December holidays.  

Plenty of Holiday Baskets are available, with a turkey and all the fixings, and can be picked-up by appointment. Many pick-up slots are also available. Sign up today for a Holiday Basket for Thanksgiving and December at FOODPANTRY.org.

Cape Ann Museum Library Is A Hidden Gem

One of our very loyal followers, David C., asked me recently to see what I could find out about the Oak Grove Cemetery on Washington St on behalf of a cousin seeking her ancestor’s gravesite. It’s EXACTLY the kind of challenge I relish. First off, I checked with Linn Parisi to ask her for guidance. Her advice led me to the Cape Ann Museum Library and Archives. (Thanks a bunch Linn!) The staff guided me to the right resource and I was able to find some leads to share with David and cousin Janet. We didn’t get all the way to actually locating the gravesite (yet) but we found the information we needed. I haven’t done family history research in an actual archive much lately and this was a welcome reminder of how fortunate we are in Gloucester to have such a rich collection of materials available in the City of Gloucester Archives, the Cape Ann Museum Library and Archives and the Sawyer Free Library local history section.

The Cape Ann Museum seems to be preparing for its upcoming special exhibit Above The Fold: The Photographers of the Gloucester Daily Times 1973-2005 opening Dec 2 as there are a number of older cameras on display in the library. It’s a lovely place just for a browse-around. There are amazingly specific titles available to cover all aspects of Gloucester history.
