Gloucester Police Department Participating in Operation Safe Watch for Seniors and Others Who May Wander

Chief Edward Conley is pleased to announce that the Gloucester Police Department is taking part in Operation Safe Watch in an effort to better serve seniors and others who may be prone to wandering, and an informational meeting has been scheduled to help explain the program.

WHEN:

Saturday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHERE:

SeniorCare Inc., 49 Blackburn Center, Gloucester, MA 01930

WHAT:

In partnership with SeniorCare Inc. and the Gloucester Council on Aging, Gloucester Police offers Operation Safe Watch, which will collect critical information that is needed by first responders as they respond to reports of missing people.
Anyone with loved ones at risk from conditions such as dementia, Autism, or other conditions, can register and provide police with information that will help locate a loved one in the event of an emergency.
Information that is collected, which includes things like sensory issues, habits and favorite places, will be saved by the police department for quick reference in the event of an emergency.
On Saturday morning, Gloucester Police and staff from SeniorCare Inc. and the Rose Baker Senior Center will join together to explain the program to interested community members, and to assist those community members with filling out intake forms. Interested residents are encouraged to bring a photograph of their loved one.
“This program will give our officers an immediate advantage should we have to initiate a search for a participant,” said Chief Conley. “I encourage anyone in the community who has a loved one at risk of wandering to sign up. Time is often of the essence when searching for missing individuals.”

The Gloucester Meetinghouse

A CELEBRATION OF GLOUCESTER’S 400TH ANNIVERSARY, NOVEMBER 18TH AT 2:00PM IN THE HISTORIC
MEETINGHOUSE, CORNER OF MIDDLE AND CHURCH STREETS (GPS, #50 MIDDLE ST.)
‘REFUSING TO PAY,’ GLOUCESTER’S ROLE BUILDING RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN AMERICA
This three-part program was created for Gloucester’s 400ᵗʰ Anniversary Celebration to share the story of
how Rev. John Murray and his Gloucester followers influenced the separation of church and state, the
promise of religious liberty in the First Amendment.
The first segment is a video that tells the story about how in 1782 Murray’s followers refused to pay
Gloucester taxes to support the town church system. Their possessions were seized and they sued to get
them back. It took three years, but they eventually won, setting a key precedent. The Massachusetts
Supreme Judicial Court ruled that “a free populace cannot be taxed to support a state church.”
In the second segment Rev. Murray magically returns to share what happened in Gloucester, details
about the famous court case, and a second court case that led to Massachusetts legally recognizing the
independence of diverse churches and synagogues.
The third segment features a panel discussion including Q&A with the audience about why this story
matters so much in present-day America with often caustic civic discourse and religion in the center of
political culture wars.
A reception with light refreshments will follow at the Sargent House Museum, a short walk down Middle
Street (#49.)
This event is free and open to the public. It will also be live-streamed by Studio 1623 on the local
channel 6 and will be available later on YouTube.
It was jointly produced by the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation, the Gloucester Unitarian
Universalist Church and the Sargent House Museum. For more information please visit:

Happy Humpback November News

Reblogged from Happy Humpback Newsletter

Greetings!
We have a lot going on this November! We will be having a food drive for the Open Door ahead of Thanksgiving as well as new menu items! Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to make sure you don’t miss out on any news or promos in real time! Here are some of the highlights to look out for!

Happy Humpback Food Drive

With Thanksgiving and winter holidays on the horizon, we’re going to hold a food drive to support the mission of The Open Door, the area’s leading hunger-relief organization.
Our food collection site will benefit people right here in our community.
Last year, The Open Door distributed 1.78 MILLION pounds of food—that’s
1.48 MILLION meals—to 8,486 people.

We are looking to raise 200 lbs of food this drive. To help us reach our goal, we are also having a competition amongst our Happy Humpback team to see who can raise the most food! But to make sure we reach our goal and help out as many people as possible, we are asking for your help donating food.

The Open Door’s most-needed items are canned chicken and tuna, peanut butter, healthy snacks, 100% juice/juice boxes, breakfast cereal, hearty soups, and canned fruits and veggies. They are requesting no glass containers or packaging for these items.

The Open Door serves people in Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester, Essex, Ipswich, Topsfield, Rowley, Boxford, Hamilton and Wenham, with mobile sites in Danvers in Lynn. Thousands of local people rely on their programs to help make ends meet. This holiday season, you can help The Open Door serve our neighbors by dropping off a bag of food into our collection bin at our cafe. You can drop off food any time during our normal business hours, 6am through 2pm, Wednesday through Sunday from November 1st though November 20th.

Snowport Returns to Boston’s Seaport

I’m kind of excited about Snowport returning to Boston’s Seaport. 140 vendors, beverages, activities, and the city’s tallest tree (that’s a big promise). It’s such a fun way to spend a winter evening. “Hold on to your handwarmers — we shook Seaport up in a giant snow globe and transformed the neighborhood into a magical winter getaway. Find gifts, treats, and plenty of surprises in this one-stop wonderland you can enjoy all season”

Historic Maritime Moment — pat morss

Two Historic Gloucester fishing schooners are currently up on the ways for maintenance at Gloucester Marine Railways, on Rocky Neck.

Looking at the schooners, across Smith Cove from Beacon Marine in East Gloucester.
Adventure (1926) and Ernestina-Morrissey (1894) are both National Historic Landmarks.
Both were built at John F James & Son Shipyard, in Essex, for Gloucester’s fishing fleet.
Ernestina-Morrissey, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, sails out of New Bedford.
Looking between the schooners that are framing two contemporary fishing vessels.
Part of Adventure’s maintenance will be replacement of her 70+ year old rudder.
Winching the rudder up couldn’t slip the pins out above the hinges.
Even cutting off the top of the rudder didn’t get enough play in the rudder post.
Strategizing Plan B. When successful, the new rudder will be fabricated here at the railways.

2024 Campaign for Ward 1

RE-ELECT “Cool headed” Scott Memhard, Ward 1 City Councilor

Dear Ward 1 Friends and neighbors:

My name is Scott Memhard. I ask for your vote re-electing me  your Ward 1 City Councilor.   My experience and perspective will best serve you as we work together and City Hall.

I’ve lived and worked in Gloucester over 40 years.  My wife Martha Oaks, Curator at Cape Ann Museum, was born here. Our three kids, Ian, Larry and Marie all went to East Gloucester, played local sports, attended college, and are blessed to still live and work nearby.  The eldest of our four grandchildren started 1st grade at the beautiful new East Veterans School on Webster Street.  I myself am a graduate of Amherst College.

As President of Cape Pond Ice Company for 40 years, where I work with my son Larry, I have weathered many challenges confronting Gloucester’s groundfish industry, harbor planning & land use.

Before elected office I also served our community as a Director & Board President of:

·    The Sawyer Free Library, the Gloucester UU Church, and the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce.

·     I’ve also served on the boards of Maritime Gloucester, Cape Ann Commercial Fishermen’s Loan Fund, Phyllis A Marine Association, and our Gloucester Fisheries Commission

·     I am a Corporator of the Cape Ann Savings Bank,

I use the slogan “cool headed” because I am in the ice business, but more importantly because I know how to listen, to balance conflicting interests, and to not get overly excited.  In our politics today, this is more important than ever.

A few Recent   progress and accomplishments I have worked to help achieve:

We have a fantastic new Elementary School for Ward 1.

We have finally resolved thorny summer beach traffic and Beach parking, with on-line reservations.

In Ward 1 we have re-paved Hartz St., Harrison Avenue, Bass Avenue, Thatchers Road, and shortly Mount Pleasant Avenue, with newly replaced water and gas infrastructure.

I have worked with residents to re-pave some of our worst Private Roads through our Betterment paving program:  Starknaught Heights and Oxford Road, 8 streets around Brier Neck and Salt Island, and Souther Road…  We have made a start to improve the busily traveled private ways of Beach Road and Brightside Avenue.  After 7 years, Ten abutters on Haskell Court will now finally have reliable private water service and a repaved roadway.

We have new affordable housing at the Cameron’s Harbor Village, and I look forward with you to the YMCA’s new affordable senior housing downtown,  and a new Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library, such an important investment for our families and children for generations to come.

We need to work together to address the challenges facing Gloucester, without undue drama or inaccuracies.  I have hosted regular neighborhood meetings to get constituent input and ishare information – on topics as wide ranging as Ten Pound Island and Living with Coyotes, to local development projects, proposed zoning changes, and access to City Budgets and website.

I value the unique beauty of our neighborhoods, the quality education in our schools, our City’s cultural richness.  I respect our taxpayers and their precious tax funding of our municipal infrastructure and services .  Like most of you, I have limited patience for unnecessary bureaucracy, waste and nonsense.

City Councilors to help you navigate and get what you need from City Hall.  We facilitate access to the Mayor’s office and all the City’s departments.   I’ve served 8 years on the Budget & Finance sub-committee, and have worked closely with those Department Heads as we review their budgets for staffing, capital investment and contracts.

We do need new zoning frameworks which respect neighborhood character, but also encourage affordable housing opportunities.  We need more mixed industrial, marine technology for local jobs, filling the void left by a shrunken fishing industry.  And I am working for a sidewalk along Farrington Avenue, connecting Niles Beach with the Back Shore.    We have a beautiful City; let’s take care of it together with true “Gloucester Pride”!

If you’d like to talk, meet, display a yard sign, or make a campaign contribution, please contact me.   Email:  smemhard@gmail.com, Facebook:  Scott Memhard for Ward I, at home 9 Graystone Road, off the top of Brightside, telephone 283-1955

Thank you for your consideration, and please VOTE Nov. 7.
