This year’s “Oceans of Discovery” series of presentations at Maritime Gloucester kicks off on Wednesday, November 7th at 7 pm when rower and adventurer Lloyd Figgins discusses his row across the Atlantic Ocean non-stop via the notorious Morocco to Caribbean route. During his 60 days at sea in a 23ft boat, Lloyd had to overcome extreme adversity including pirates, shipping, sharks and 50ft waves. He also conducted scientific research into the marine species he encountered over his 3,200 mile journey. Join Lloyd for an inspiring evening delving into what it takes to complete one of the toughest challenges known to mankind. The presentation is sponsored by Grand Banks Building Products, Inc. Arrive early as we are expecting a full house.

Thought some of you rowing enthusiasts may be interested in attending at GMHC.

THE 2012 ESSEX PRIDE AWARD WINNERS!

Debbie French and Beth Cairns: As longtime librarians, these two women instill the love of reading in children and older readers as well. The library is a gathering place, a social hub, a pie fest venue and a book group gathering spot. It fills a necessary spot in the day to day lives of all Essex residents. Debbie and Beth welcome all who come to the library with warm smiles and a willingness to lend a helping hand. They are always around town offering smiles and a helping hand.

Mark Lynch: Mark has been a tireless volunteer in the town for years. Mark served on the Finance Committee, the Board of Selectmen, and is currently the chair of the Conomo Point Planning Committee. He is also the President of the Essex Lions Club, which runs the very successful Essex Turkey Trot as well as many other service oriented activities around town. Mark is always there to help out wherever there is a need.

Kim Reed: Kim seems to be everywhere there is a need for a volunteer for children’s events. She was a PTO president, and after her term has continued to coordinate Backpack Thursdays, the Essex Elementary School’s communication network. She is always seen in the hallways of the school, volunteering wherever there’s a need. She has been a Brownie/Girl Scout leader and also coordinates cheerleading for the younger children.

Kurt Wilhelm: Kurt is all things history when it comes to the town of Essex. He is a selfless volunteer who performs the important task of preserving the rich town history, both through documents, photographs and authoring books. He was a long serving member of the Essex Historical Society and is currently a member of the Board of Assessors and the Conomo Point Planning Committee. Kurt is everywhere there is a story to tell about the town.

Georgeanne Richards: Georgeanne has run the very popular Sea Meadows Gifts shop in Essex for many years. She supports and promotes new businesses in town. She offers information about Essex to all who visit her shop, recommending restaurants, other shops and activities to do in Essex on a daily basis. She offers a welcoming smile and is a great retail ambassador for the town. Her shop is a beacon for shoppers both near and far. Her volunteering for the town is well known, and she’s always ready to do what is asked of her.

Toby Burnham- The Seagull Whisperer

So yesterday this Homie was on the roof of Toby Burnham’s lobster boat The Jupiter II with a striper plug with it’s treble hooks stuck in its leg and abdomen.  it was stuck hobbling around and in obvious pain.

2012-11-03 14.43.50

Toby was inside the cabin oblivious to the condition of the seagull and when he popped his head out the seagull flew off the roof of the boat and onto the roof of our dock here at Captain Joe and Sons.

Toby grabbed a piece of herring and lured the injured seagull back down off the roof of the dock and just as the seagull got within striking range he snatched it by the tail and held it by it’s neck.

2012-11-03 14.44.54

Then grabbing a pair of metal cutters he snipped the treble hooks to remove them from the feet and abdomen without tearing the belly out of the seagull.

Moments later he was on the deck eating a piece of fish scraps Toby fed him.

2012-11-03 14.47.30

A job well done just a week after his 50th birthday.

Nice work Toby!

Video- Talking Kickstarter With Writer Joel Brown

Joel Brown discusses his experience fundsourcing his book through Kickstarter.  It’s an interesting lesson on how Kickstarter works and the experience Joel had going through the Kickstarter process.

Without Kickstarter and programs like it Joel Brown’s Essex Coastal Byway Guide maybe never gets published, Our EJ LeFavour’s Pussycat Book doesn’t get published and The C. B. Fisk Opus Documentary maybe doesn’t get made the way they would have liked.

Understand more about the process by watching the video with writer Joel Brown here-

Missed the hoisting of the blades but the size and precision of this project is amazing.  The crew has been very polite and will try to answer questions.  One of the blades shows some signatures from a blade signing.
