The Perfect Gloucester Holiday Gift
The Real Santa Claus by Lobster Boat this Saturday December 1 at 3:45PM in Rockport
As an annual tradition dating back centuries, Santa Claus rides into Rockport Harbor on a fishing boat, and then makes his way to Dock Square to light the tree. This is no mall Santa but the real thing!!
The day we have all been waiting for!
This Saturday, December 1st. Santa arrives at 3:45PM and the tree lighting is at 4PM in Dock Square.

Cooperative Seagulls
While filming B-roll of gorgeous herons, ducks, geese, and gulls this morning, the homies were particularly cooperative. Click images to view larger.
Come to think of it, the sunbeams, the herons, the pearly pink-hued surf caught in the dawn light, and sand turned-brilliant-gold were also cooperating. It must be my good fortune! Last night on my way home from work I purchased my first ever lottery ticket and, although unfortunate in that I did not win the half billion dollars, I feel fortunate everyday for our shared beauty that is Gloucester.

CORRECTION: Berklee Rock Night @ Lat 43 $10 tickets available until 5pm
Today’s Gloucester Daily Times article correctly states that tonight’s show featuring Boston rockers, The Shills with local rising stars Renee & Joe, is at Latitude 43. But their Tunes on the Town listing has the wrong location.
Tonight’s ALL AGES SHOW is at Latitude 43. Doors open at 6:30. Come for a great dinner and stay for the show. Kids: bring your parents and prove to them that this generation is producing great music!
Get $10 tickets online here (until 3:30pm) or @ Gloucester Music or Liquor Locker until 5pm. Tickets are $15 at the door — cash only at the door, please.
A portion of the proceeds benefits the Berklee2Gloucester Scholarship Fund.
Renee & Joe have promised an excellent set of new music. Here’s a taste of the hot, driving, melodic sound you can expect from The Shills:
Cape Ann Diner is open in Brown’s Mall!
In Brown’s Mall, there is now a new cozy restaurant, the Cape Ann Diner (7 Pleasant Street)! They are currently open 7-2PM, Monday-Saturday (closed on Sunday).
There aren’t big signs outside yet, but they sometimes have a sandwich board outside. The closest entrance/exit is the door between The Hive and the Pleasant Street Tea Co. I came in that way, and chanced upon some friends who were enjoying a delicious lunch at the diner.
I joined them for a cup of hot cocoa (with a mound of whipped cream) – perfect on a cold early winter day.
The prices are very affordable. A bowl of the soup of the day – my favorite item on most menus – is just $2.95! The most expensive item I could find on the lunch menu (all good traditional American fare) is the Burger Bomb – two fresh patties, American cheese, crispy bacon, grilled pepper and onions, bbq sauce and mayo on a grilled seeded bun with lettuce and tomato with choice of potato chips, home fries, or mashed potatoes. All of that for $8.95! That sounds so good, I am almost drooling on my keyboard. No, they didn’t bribe me to say that.
If you go in the front door of Brown’s Mall on Main Street, you get to enjoy the decked halls as you head up one flight of stairs towards the back left.
Up the stairs, into the hall, to the right!
Thanksgiving Morning Surf
Thanksgiving morning I took an early morning walk to relax before all the craziness started. It reminded me to be extra thankful for the wonderful place I live.
The light we have on Cape Ann is amazing and everyday it’s a little bit different. It was nice to have the Thanksgiving break, where I had time to enjoy the mornings a little more, rather than my usual rush to work and sitting in 128 traffic.

Prairie Lights The Musical
Storyline:
Prairie Lights tells the story of a Jewish brother and sister who journey west on an Orphan Train in 1905. Arriving with other homeless youths in a tiny Nebraska town just before the holidays, Benjamin and Rose are adopted by Wellspring’s only Jewish couple, Abe and Sophie Birnbaum. Devout 12-year-old Benjamin clashes with Abe, a successful shopkeeper who has abandoned his religion. Meanwhile, 15-year-old Rose falls secretly in love with a fellow orphan, thus upsetting Sophie’s marriage plans for the girl. Townsfolk are further divided by the fearful banker, Maxwell Ryder, who wants to send all of the orphans back to New York. As the town prepares for Christmas and Hanukkah approaches, Benjamin finds himself enlisting the young people—orphans and local kids alike—on a quest to reunite Wellspring.

Founded in 2004, Cape Ann Brewing Company is an award-winning, family-owned, micro-brewery in the heart of the historic seaport of Gloucester in Cape Ann. Brewing beer whose bold flavor and character reflects the spirit and courage of the sailors of the North Atlantic fishing fleet, and is the same passion that drives what we do. The Fisherman’s line of beer is a tribute to hard work, and a salute to friendships that endure. Come on out tomorrow night, Thursday the 29th, to celebrate my opening at Alchemy!
If you’ve been to an art opening at Alchemy, you know they do it up with style. Add to that a Bully Boy Distilleries release party for their new aged whiskey (their vodka, rum and white whiskey will also be there), and you have all the makings for a fun evening at a great spot. Hope to see a bunch of GMG peeps and FOBs there – it will be like a Mug Up with alcohol, and not on a Sunday morning for those who could never come because they were at church or didn’t get up that early on Sunday morning. Feel free to bring a friend. Thursday, November 29th 5:30-7:30 at Alchemy Cafe and Bistro, 3 Duncan Street, Gloucester.

Chickity Check It! “As I was Saying by Sheree DeLorenzo”
My buddy Sheree has her own blog-
As I was Saying by Sheree DeLorenzo
"The title of this blog comes from my mother. She always used to say, “Sheree is such a good conversationalist.” This was her kind and gentle way of saying, “Sheree talks nonstop.” She would also say, “When Sheree dies and goes to Heaven, she won’t miss a beat. She’ll just look straight at God and say, ‘As I was saying….’ and continue on with her chatter.” So the title is a nod to my mother and her wit.

Haddock and Dill from FOB Anne Kennedy
Many from the GMG community may be familiar with FOB Anne Kennedy through the lovely photos she submits and by her always kind and thoughtful comments she contributes. Recently I subscribed to her blog Haddock and Dill, a simply fascinating personal memoir gleaned from diary accounts and a cache of letters and notes between Anne’s mother, Bonnie Belshe, and Bonnie’s parents (Anne’s grandparents).
Currently Anne is posting about her family’s life in post-war Japan; I believe the time period is roughly 1953-1954. Upon their return from Japan, Bonnie wrote a book about their journey to Japan titled Dragon-fly Land: Japan.
“…Each one has its own special feature which attracts both Japanese and foreign visitors. Some of these old buildings contain famous paintings or wood carvings enriched with gold. Others are noted for their cherry trees or gardens which are unusual in that they have no flowers in them. The gardens are made of sand, rocks and moss.” ~ Excerpt from Dragon-fly Land: Japan, by Bonie Belshe, 1955.
Harvested Root Vegetable– Ed note: looks like daikon?
I am thoroughly enjoying the wealth of beautiful snapshots of Japanese landscapes and post war culture, and especially the collection of photographs of everyday life; with photos of rice fields and vegetables, wildflowers and children gathering fruits beneath a gingko trees, woodblock prints, fascinating recipes, and lovely brush and ink illustrations painted by Bonnie.
“We have been taking walks up into the mountains. We all love the walks and you can see for miles in all directions. There are several old air raid shelters left in the mountains–dark, damp tunnels. They make me shudder to look at them. From the top of the mountains we can see Kobe in one direction, Osaka the other direction & the ocean all in front of us with big ships anchored in the docks. The goldenrod is beautiful here–taller than B–and each time we walk we find some different flower.” Bonnie Belshe
Ed note: I am struck by how similar this species of Japanese goldenrod looks to our native Seaside Goldenrod (Solidago sempervirens), with thick waxy leaves, large flowers, and in its height.
“I wish you could have one of these maple trees for your yard. Some of them are turning red now and they are simply scarlet. Japan has so much beauty. No matter how shabby a house or how small the garden there is always a clump of blooming flowers. Cosmos and dahlias are everywhere. Even the vegetable gardens are beautiful–rows so straight and never a weed.” Bonnie Belshe
Adorable Photo of Anne and her Brother Bobby
“Bathing is a special event to the Japanese whether it is done at home or at a resort. The body is washed clean before one gets into the bathtub. Then the bather gets into the water and soaks for a long time. It is a way of relaxing the body as well as a way of getting warm since Japanese homes have very little heat even in the winter.”
~ Excerpt from Dragon-fly Land: Japan, by Bonie Belshe, 1955.
