Johnny Linville and Friends of the High Line

Perhaps the Future Holds a Friends of the Gloucester Harbor Walk Gardens
Last night I had the joy of hearing Johnny Linville, Manager of Horticulture for the Friends of the High Line, at Bolyston Hall in Boston, and presented by COG Design. The dynamic Mr. Linville spoke to a full house of designers, landscape architects, and students eager to hear his presentation and he did not disappoint. With slides and a great sense of humor, Linville shared their successes, and some few failures, reminding us thatĀ the ‘park in the sky’ is a living experiment.

The High Line is an elevated freight rail line transformed into a public park on Manhattan’s West Side. It is owned by the City of New York and maintained by Friends of the High Line. This event is timely for Gloucester as Chris Muskopf, the lead architect of the Gloucester Harbor Walk, and I have been speaking about the possibility of developing a Friends of Gloucester Harbor Walk. Friends of the High Line is a non-profit conservancy working with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation to ensure the High Line is maintained as an exceptional public space for all visitors to enjoy. I am hoping that perhaps we can create interest in developing a Friends of Gloucester Harbor Walk to help with the educational component of the butterfly garden and to help with maintenance.

Available on the High Line webstore, and at the top of my Christmas wish list, is the book High Line: The Inside Story of New York City’s park in the Sky, written by Friends of the High Line Co-Founders Joshua David and Robert Hammond. Published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2011. 100% of the proceeds from this book go toward maintenance and operation of the High Line.

From the High Line website:Ā The High Line is a public park built on an historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. It is owned by the City of New York, and maintained and operated by Friends of the High Line. Founded in 1999 by community residents, Friends of the High Line fought for the High Line’s preservation and transformation at a time when the historic structure was under the threat of demolition. It is now the non-profit conservancy working with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to make sure the High Line is maintained as an extraordinary public space for all visitors to enjoy. In addition to overseeing maintenance, operations, and public programming for the park, Friends of the High Line works to raise the essential private funds to support more than 90 percent of the park’s annual operating budget, and to advocate for the preservation and transformation of theĀ High Line at the Rail Yards, the third and final section of the historic structure, which runs between West 30th and West 34th Streets.

Bad Santa tomorrow @ Dog Bar

Now, this just looks like fun!

BadSantaDogBarofficial

These guys from Orlando are on tour, so tomorrow night is probably your only chance to see them. Ā Here’s how local, Paul Diamond (whose band Diamond Dolls are opening the show) describes them:

They are called Bad Santa and The Angry Elves. A Christmas cover/mashup band in complete Ho Ho Ho attire. They are very entertaining as well as a well rehearsed band hailing from Orlando, and New York City.

If you can’t find something to do on Cape Ann this weekend, you’ve lost it

33 live music shows to choose from tonight through Sunday (see weekend live music lineup here). Ā Oops, make that 32 (unless you already have tickets to Overboard’s sold out show at Old SloopĀ tomorrow night). Ā  Ā Here’s a taste of what you’re missing if you don’t:

But wait! Ā They’re coming back to Rockport as part of New Year’s Rockport Eve’s huge lineup of excellent entertainment. Ā See the NYRE live music lineup here.

Tonight’s music lineup is killer and includes KBMG @ Dog Bar featuring Dave Brown on guitar. Ā Just in case you forgot who Gloucester’s greatest guitarist is, here they are at Celebrate Gloucester 2010 (with Nelson Bragg Ā on percussion):

JON BUTCHER bio

Bio provided fromĀ http://www.jonbutcher.com

Grammy-nominated Jon Butcher is one of a select handful of influential recording artists comprising the legendary Boston music scene. MTV vids and hit songs, “Life Takes A Life” ,”Wishes”, “Holy War”, “Goodbye Saving Grace”, “Miracles”, “Send Me Somebody” comprise the underpinnings of a recording/ touring career that continues today. Two critically acclaimed CD’s, “Positively The Blues” and “Electric Factory” mark Jon’s enduring love affair with all things Americana- blues, jazz, Dixieland, folk, swing, Cajun and more.

Recorded with colleague and longtime friend Charlie Farren, “FBI”, the self-titled Farren Butcher Incorporated CD continues the relationship Jon has had with earthy, guitar drenched R&B. Including two re-written/ re-recorded hits from their respective early careers, the songs on “FBI” are explosive, cinematic and deftly recorded at Farren’s Boston-based FMansion Studios. Additionally Jon and Charlie appear as celebrity Judges on the Emmy Award-winning tv broadcast, Community Auditions.

Jon’s ELECTRIC FACTORY provides film score, soundtrack and music licensing services for television and film companies looking for something decidedly unique. With it’s launch at FOX in 1991, ELECTRIC FACTORY has provided music for all of the major network/cable television carriers through shows like; the currently running hit show, Shameless (Showtime), United States of Tara (Showtime), Ugly Betty [ABC], The Simpsons (Fox), Six Feet Under (HBO), Deadwood (HBO), My Name Is Earl (NBC), and many more.

2012 is already a busy year for Jon Butcher and ELECTRIC FACTORY. With a discography of 17 international CD releases, international critical and Guitar Press acclaim and a hit TV show preparing for its third season it’s hard to argue the point. Share the Vision.

Hey Joey:

Just wanted to send out this invitation to the pottery show in Rockport this weekend. If it has already been sent to you I apologize.

Thanks

PS….GMG is such an asset to Gloucester. You have done an amazing job! Good for you…who would have thought that little boy I used to ride the school bus with , would be such a huge presence in the city. And not because of his business, but because he has made the citizens of the city his business.  Take care. Nina(Testaverde)Goodick J

Chickity Check It! What Causes A Sea Breeze From Sail Magazine

What Causes a Sea Breeze

By Teresa Carey • Posted: Dec 3, 2012

My first solo offshore passage began with sunshine, gentle breezes and easy sailing. But there was nothing gentle about my return to land at day’s end. Tempestuous headwinds opposed my progress as my little boat crashed through the waves in the gathering darkness. By the time I finally neared the harbor entrance, it was fully night and there was no light to guide me through the channel. I was tense as Daphne raced between the rows of channel markers, inconspicuous in the gloom.
