Upcoming Events From The Gloucester Police Department via Our New Tech Savvy Police Chief Len Campanello
The Gloucester Police Department will be hosting a Citizens Police Academy beginning February 27th and continuing for 6 weeks thereafter. It is a great opportunity for residents to learn more about their Police Department and is a program that has been well received and enjoyed in the past. We are happy to be bringing it back. Applications are available at the Police Station and some area businesses. The class is filling up fast, so if your readers would like to get in, encourage them to do so fast. For more information, they can contact Lt. John McCarthy at 978-281-9900.
Ā Gloucester PD has also brought back the Gloucester Police Fitness Challenge!! We know the complaints some folks have about their officers being, ummm, slightly bigger than there uniforms, so we are encouraging our guys to get into shape with the 2013Ā GPDĀ Fitness Challenge. Its 3 months long, from mid January to mid April,Ā and incorporates weight loss, exercise, and education on how to make lifestyle changes that would lead to lifelong better fitness. We have over 30 members of the PoliceĀ DepartmentĀ enrolled, including myself. If you see us out there running as a group, we’d encourage your readers to honk for support. In that same vein, we are asking for business owners to rally and support our attempts to be positive, healthy role models by pledging a $1 per pound for every pound we lose as a team, up to a maximum of 400lbs. The monies raised will be used exclusively to fund a new treadmill and new elliptical machine to further encourage our officers to remain healthy. Ā While our aim is $1 per pound, we would welcome any support. In exchange, we will be providing a plaque of appreciation for those businesses that show their support, as well as thanking and recognizing them in future media releases about the program. While I understand some may feel this is a lot to ask in these financial times, especially when we, as police officers, should remain in shape, but the reality is we are encouraged by the motivation shown recently and are trying to give an opportunity to become involved in our success inĀ thisĀ initiative. I thank your readers and businesses in advance for any support.
Ā Also, the Police Department is proud to be participating in 1 Billion Rising, a global campaign to stop violence against women and girls. This is locally sponsored by HAWC, the North Shore Rape Crisis Center, the Gloucester Coalition for the Prevention of Domestic Abuse and Cape Ann Savings Bank. On February 14 atĀ 12:15pmĀ in front of the Cape Ann Savings Bank Park at 101 Main St there will be a moment of silent recognition. We hope your readers are able to join us for a few minutes and show that we are united in our fight to end violence against women and girls.
Ā Thanks for all your help and your service to the community. look forward to speaking with you soon.

The Number One Creepiest Guy Tattoo and It’s Not Even Up For Debate…
You know the gangbangers with the teardrop tattoos for every guy they murdered, or the white supremacists with their swastika tattoos or the Hell’s Angels with tattoos all over their face?
They all pale in comparison on the creepy meter compared to a grown ass man with dainty angel wings tattoed on their shoulder blades.
Straight Creepy McCreepster.
It’s a short month ~ Maybe that’s why there’s so much going on already
In fact there’s enough music over the next few nights that it’s gonna be hard to choose where to go out this week. Ā Here’s the complete live music lineup to help you figure it out.
And here are some videos too Ā . . .

Beer and Cheese Pairing at Savour Wine and Cheese
On Friday Feb. 1,Ā Savour Wine and CheeseĀ had a Beer and Cheese Pairing event! Ā They had a variety of cheeses and beers available for tasting, and a sheet for you to mark what you thought were the best pairings. Ā If you identified all the same pairings as the store’s expert, you got a gift certificate! Ā Also, all the featured beers and cheese were on sale %20 off.
I stopped by at the beginning of the event. Ā I didn’t try the beer because I had to drive right afterwards, but I did try the cheeses, which were all very tasty. I ended up buying a cheese called “Red Dragon”, a Welsh cheddar made with ale and mustard seeds – really good, with a distinctive flavor! Here are some photos I got before the crowd arrived (I only had time to be there at the beginning when there were only a couple of people, but more were arriving as I left).
Quote of the Week by Greg Bover
āSometimes I sits and thinks, and sometimes I just sits.ā
Leroy Robert āSatchelā Paige (1906 – 1982)
Perhaps the greatest pitcher of all time, Paige, an African-American from Mobile, Alabama, was not allowed into Major League Baseball until 1948 when he was 42 years old, the oldest ārookieā ever. He began his professional career in 1926 and pitched for numerous teams in the segregated Negro Leagues, gaining fame not only for his throwing prowess, but also for his ebullience and love of the game. Even at his advanced age he was elected to the All-Star team twice and was finally inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971 at the urging of Ted Williams and others. Among his other famous sayings: āHow old would you be if you didnāt know how old you are?ā
