Touch a Truck Fundraising Event Horribles Parade Fundraising Event Sept 28th!

The Fishtown Horribles Parade Committee would like to announce that on Sept, 28, 2013 from 9 am to 2 pm (rain date Saturday October 12th), at the O’Maley Middle School in Gloucester Ma, we will be hosting our Touch a Truck Fundraising Event. This family oriented event will be fun for all and include many vehicles from the communities of Gloucester, Rockport and Essex. The entrance cost will be $5 per person and children 3 and under are free. There will be door prizes and food will also be sold. The money raised from this event will go to support next July 3rd parade here in Gloucester. A sample of some types of trucks to expect are Fire Trucks, Police vehicles, dump trucks, backhoes, Coast Guard Boat, tractors, and many others. It should be a great opportunity for everyone, especially the children, to enjoy the day by climbing and taking lots of photos with their favorite truck. Please come out and support the Fishtown Horribles Parade. We hope to see you all on Sept 28th at O’Maley Middle School from 9 am to 2 pm (rain date: Saturday October 12th, 9 am to 2 pm).

Community Stuff 9/18/13

The Cape Pond Ice Company, which dates from 1848, will be offering free Historic Icehouse Tours this coming weekend, September 20 – 22, on Friday at 2pm, Saturday at 11 am and 1 pm, and Sunday at 11 am.  A warm sweater or sweatshirt, and practical footware (no flip flops !) are recommended.

The narrated tours last 45 minutes to an hour, and include archival film footage of natural ice harvests from the beginning of last century, an account of the company’s 165 year history, a tour through the 335 # block ice manufacturing area and the 28 degree F. icehouse where new custom ice sculptures are on display, and kids may indulge in a snow ball fight !  The tour concludes with a visit on the ice company wharf overlooking Gloucester Harbor, where vessels are still iced down with tons of ice, and  then with several film clips from the WB Perfect Storm movie and the company’s own upbeat TV Commercials.

These free Icehouse tours are sponsored through the Essex National Heritage Area’s Trails & Sails program, which Cape Pond Ice Company has participated in now for 10 years, since 2004, and has consistently been voted the “People’s Choice” popular venue Award.  Parking is available.  The free tour program will be repeated again next weekend, September 27 – 29.

The Gloucester Writers Center is proud to present author Joe Muzio at The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck on October 2nd.   Muzio’s memoir Buddy Remembers- Then and Now is a intimate view into the life of an American Family.  Joe is the second child of Italian American parents, both of whom came to America from southern Italy as children. The book is a detailed recollection of his parents’ lives: their marriage, their approaches to life, how they raised his sister and he in Brooklyn and Queens, New York and their continuing influence.  Mr. Muzio is married to Lois Grant Muzio and has three sons and two grandchildren, he lives in Rockport, MA.

A little work on Parsons Street… I really liked the idea of a fishing net painting but thought it would be fun to see a real net in place. Bear in mind this concept is definitely not OSHA approved…or in anyway encouraged!! The first shot shows current conditions, the second with the new fishing net in place, and then the third is just an extreme. Now I’ll have to find Bob and show him what I did to his street…

I love filming and photographing around Gloucester all year round, but especially at this time of year when I find the light to be sublime. The moisture in the air provides a gossamer veil that magnifies the supernal quality of light; even the most ordinary of daily activities captured finds added beauty.

Lanesville Music Fest Next Saturday 9/28 – Perfect for the whole FAMILY!

The Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Street in Gloucester, presents our 4th Annual Lanesville Music Festival on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 1:00 to 11:30 pm.  (see music lineup here)

Poster - LCC Music FestivalThe Festival features ten hours of great live music starting outdoors on the grounds from 1-7pm with some of the North Shore’s best musicians covering:  bluegrass, traditional and contemporary folk, Celtic, country and blues, jump, jive and boogie. Great food and beverages will be sold by Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ with beer and wine on sale, as well as local crafts and children’s activities.  Admission for the daytime music is by donation.   

 It all continues indoors on our dance floor from 7:30-11:30pm, featuring the great, KBMG band (King, Brown, Mattacks and Ginandes).  Advance tickets for the evening dance party are available at Gloucester Music on Main Street and the Plum Cove Grind in Lanesville for $12 until the day of the event.  Tickets will be $15 at the door and you can purchase during the daytime music event.
