Drake's Bakery was founded in 1896, and in the 1960's they made popular snacks such as Ring Dings, Yodels, Devil Dogs, Yankee Doodles, Sunny Doodles, and Funny Bones. Devil Dogs were my favorite. I haven't had one in fifty years. The one I ate tonight was awesome, and must be consumed with milk. I can't wait to try a Ring Ding!

The Manchester Athletic Club and Lil’ Sprouts of Essex Preschool Partner to support the “whole child” and their families.

Lil’ Sprouts of Essex Preschool, serving students 2-6 years of age, located at #1 Scott’s Way in Essex, MA will partner with the Manchester Athletic Club’s program “Gymazing” to create “MAC SPROUTS”.

Presently Lil’ Sprouts of Essex operates on the public school calendar and is in operation from 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Friday.  Jane Lindland, Director and owner of Lil’ Sprouts of Essex recognizes there is a piece of the community that she could better serve by filling the need for an extended day after school program (3:30 PM – 5:30 PM), as well as coverage during school vacation weeks and full time summer care.

Marcy Plante,  Director of Gymazing and an alumni family of Lil’ Sprouts of Essex is working hand in hand with Ms. Lindland to develop “MAC SPROUTS” which will begin in September 2014.  With this partnership Lil’ Sprouts of Essex will bring to their students and families a focus on physical education, health and nutrition.  Additional offerings will include instruction in tennis, swim and yoga.  Students will be transported from Lil’ Sprouts of Essex to the Manchester Athletic Club where families will pick up.

The program will begin with a limited enrollment of 20 students per day.  To enroll contact Lil’ Sprouts of Essex @ 978-768-6287.

Cruise for Schools on the Beauport Princess – supporting innovation in education in Gloucester Public Schools

The Gloucester Education Foundation’s 2014 summer fundraiser, “Cruise for Schools” is coming Sunday, July 27, 2014 from 5-8pm. The event will be a sunset cruise aboard the Beauport Princess, docked at Cruiseport in downtown Gloucester, and will feature live music, including performances by local musicians and musically talented teachers and administrators. The event will also include raffles and great food, all in support of the GEF’s innovative programs in the Gloucester Public School System.

GEF supports everything from field trips to performances, literacy and science school year and summer programs, and even provides funding for school gardens and classroom aids that help our teachers to provide the very best student interaction even in large classrooms. EVERY student in Gloucester Public Schools benefits from the GEF.

Tickets are $75 and include the cruise, appetizers from Vinwood Caterers, live music and assist in the GEF’s mission to continue to help students to “Think the Best”.

The day we planted blueberry bushes is the very same day the catbirds began to call our garden home. We now see Gray Catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis) throughout the seasons, devouring the seeds and fruit of holly, crabapple, winterberry, magnolia, blueberry, and shad. Their cat-like cries, which lends the species their common name, are welcome and often heard. Gray Catbirds are in the Mimidae Family and, like their relatives the Mockingbirds, also mimic the songs of other birds.

Although I have read that catbirds are shy, they seem relatively sociable in our garden and aren’t threatened by the presence of people within close proximity. We keep the bird baths filled with fresh clean water and I especially love to watch the catbirds from our kitchen window as they are so exuberant in their bathing habits–diving and splashing and then drying their wings at the edge of the basin. Oh Joyous Spring!

Three investors bought Merchants (or Pearce) island about 1890: Edward Samuel Page, Mr. Kitchen, and another investor. They had trouble selling lots because of fresh water issues. This photo shows Merchants Island from Riverview, with the pier and float in the foreground, enabling the only access to the island. A handful of cottages still stand on Merchants, used in the summer only.

Here's a cottage on Merchant’s Island about 1900, with a moored dory with fish traps. A few hardy summer residents of Merchants have visited the gallery. I noticed they frequently looked outside at the weather. That's understandable - it's a long row home.
