Hey Joe, my name is John Linquata and I’m a member of the Fishtown Horribles Parade Committee.
We have been working all year long to put out another fun and entertaining parade for this great city. This year we are honoring Ray Smith of Smith Hardware who was a life long sponsor of the parade as parade marshall. We have Gloucester’s own 2014 Special Olympic Gold metal winner Danny Williamson as Grand Marshall Danny brought home the gold in the shot put and bronze in the 100 and 200 meter relay. We will also recognize and congratulate our two scholarship winners Samantha Ryder and Malya McLean.
Of course some of our favorite marching bands will be back and a few new ones that we are really excited to see perform here. As always we will have all the amazing floats that the wonderful people of Gloucester put together for the city to enjoy (which people can pre-register for at www.fishtownhorribles.org ). Of corse the Horribles our namesake who we are always looking for more of and clearly the Cape Ann YMCA would like to see more of too, because they donated two weeks at camp spindrift, one for a boy and one for a girl, anyone who would like to help collect money this year as a horrible will get an extra shot at the week at camp. And as always the parade line up is first come first serve which means the earlier you show up the closer to the front you are, Horribles are encouraged to show up around 5 pm and the parade starts promptly at 6 pm.
If anyone would like to volunteer we never turn down help we will be at the High School Auto shop Wednesday after 6 pm decorating and setting up and on Thursday from noon on, there is always plenty to do. And if anyone has any questions all of our contact information can be found on our website again that is http://www.fishtownhorribles.org and don’t forget to like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/fishtownhorriblesparade and tag us in your photos new or old we love to see them and others do too. We can’t wait to see everyone there have a happy and safe 3rd and 4th.
Thanks again Joe, anything we can do to get more people involved only makes the parade better for everyone, so we really appreciate your help. Have a great day.

GLOUCESTER AND PROVENCE FRANCE SUMMER EXCHANGE Saira Austin in Gloucester and Magali Excoffier in Mallemort, Provence, France
This will be the third summer that a French family and I exchange our houses, our cars and our friends. Four years ago Magali and Thierry and their two children Ariane and Thibaud arrived in Gloucester to spend a whole summer. They stayed in one room at the Captainâs Lodge. They fell in love with Gloucester and I fell in love with them. Thibaud spends his summers sailing at Eastern Point Yacht Club and Ariane spent hers drawing with the Rockport Art Association and learning English at a school in Boston. Now, during the summers, I live in their house and they live in mine. We exchange our cultures, our passions, our gardens, our townâs festivities. Magali and I would like to tell our story as it unfolds in this âGood Morning Gloucesterâ blog.

Calling Dr Leif Bakland- Can You Settle Our Debate?
Iâm all about rinsing my mouth with Hydrogen peroxide after I floss and brush my teeth. The taste doesnât bother me and the results I think leave my teeth whiter and mouth feeling clean and Hydrogen peroxide is like $1.50 for a jug that lasts about a month.
My buddy Alicia has a different approach-
Hi Joey,
Not gonna lie, I’ve been thinking about the whole rinsing with straight up hydrogen peroxide thing. I mean, can that really be safe?
I have an alternative for you. The Crest whitening mouth wash works! Gives you that clean mouth feeling and white teeth with out the horrible taste of peroxide!
I also use the Crest Luxe for a toothpaste! My teeth are white as if I spent hundreds on professional whitening!
Can we get a professional opinion on rinsing with straight up peroxide?
Yours truly,
Alicia Cox-DeWolfe
Dr Bakland, can you give us your professional opinion on which is a better approach to whiter teeth and a healthier mouth?

Every summer crowds gather to walk the grassy path at dusk to see stellar modern dance on an outdoor stage in the woods. This summer, Windhover Center for the Performing Arts in Rockport presents Forty Steps Dance and Sarah Slifer Swift in its Summer Dance Concert, July 18-20.
Forty Steps will perform Creatures (2014), an otherworldly tribute that is full of animal magnetism. The work wowed the sold-out audience at the Spring Dance Concert at Nahant Town Hall; an imaginative transformation solidly based in disciplined technique and the dancersâ energetic commitment. Artistic Director and choreographer Sallee Slagle hopes the work will spark an affinity for nature among the audience as well. âWe all have a connection to nature,â she said, âbut in our busy lives, we rarely have time to observe and engage.â In addition, the company will perform Accord, a crowd-pleasing work created by Slagle in 1992 and returned to the repertory for the 20th Anniversary season last year.
Sarah Slifer Swift is presenting two works, Insenser (2014, premiere) and Invisible Stories (2013). Insenser, named after an NSA surveillance system, is a look at the human response to watching, being watched, and becoming data. Power, trust, control and vulnerability take the stage in a work that is at once alluring and disturbing. Invisible Stories, a collaboration between Swift and Vermont-based writer and choreographer Kate Tarlow Morgan, is a performance piece based on the idea that the book, open or closed, occupies the inner and outer landscapes in which we live. The book is a place, a body of matter and manifestation, and it is also endangered. As part of the Invisible Stories performance, an installation for one of the Windhover buildings will be on display at the start of each evening.
For decades, Windhover Center for the Performing Arts has hosted a magical scene featuring the finest modern dancers in Massachusetts, New York City, and beyond. Donât miss this chance to see Forty Steps Dance and Sarah Slifer Swift in concert! Tickets can be purchased at http://www.windhover.org, or at Toad Hall Bookstore, Rockport; The Bookstore, Gloucester; or by sending a check to Windhover,
P.O. Box 2249, Rockport, MA,01966.
Hi Joey and Ray,
Many people love the American flags on Stacy Boulevard. As you may have heard Ringo Tarr has been purchasing along with donations the flags over the years and this year they came up short.
Because I love the flag display I decided along with help from Adam Curcuru and Lucia at the Veterans office on Emerson Ave. we have made it possible for people to purchase and donate a flag. The purchase of a flag can also be made at my shop on Essex Ave. These flags are 100% Made in USA.
The donated flags are then held for Ringo with a card telling him who purchased it. He picks up the flags as needed to replace any worn flags.
I have attached a photo of the display that is at the Veterans office.
Thank you for your help in getting the word out.
Hope you have a wonderful July 4th. Holiday,
With sincere thank,
Pauline Bresnahan

Baby Robins, Brought to You by Wolf Hill
We are so fortunate in Gloucester to have not one, but two, terrific garden centers, Wolf Hill and Goose Cove Gardens (and Corliss Brothers in Ipswich isn’t too far off the beaten track, either). Barbara and her team at Goose Cove are phenomenal as is the team at Wolf Hill–Kate, Joe, Ben, Dave, Jake, and all the guys.
Both Wolf Hill and Goose Cove take wonderful care of the wildlife that makes their home in the very inviting environment of their nurseries. Last year Kate kept me well supplied in butterfly eggs, which had been deposited on Wolf Hill plants, and whenever I shop at either garden center, a frequent topic of conversation is the robins because they oftentimes build their nests smack dab in the middle of a plant, or group of plants, that are for sale. Robins especially like to nest in hanging flower baskets. This year was no exception. Today when at Wolf Hill I spied a mama robin zooming away from a balled and burlapped tree. The nest was at eye level! I ran and got my cameras but filmed for only a moment because both parents found it highly disturbing. The babies were hungry, with wide gaping greedy mouths, and it was clear my presence was keeping them from their breakfasts. As soon as I turned away, the parents resumed feeding the babies.
Isn’t this sweet how they take care of the robins at Wolf Hill?
Shout Out to Chief Campanello and the Gloucester Police Department!
I discussed writing this post with my husband on Sunday, just to let people know how professional I thought was the police presence at Fiesta, when the department’s own release was published yesterday (posted here). Nevertheless, I wanted to share my observations regarding the department during the Fiesta.
For the past week I have been filming throughout the square, and in the thick of Pavilion Beach for all three days of the Greasy Pole and seine boat races, amidst the throngs of thousands and thousands. I just have to say that despite all the rambunctious craziness, the officers were without fail courteous, cool, calm, and collected. I am sure their patience was tried often enough, but whether directing traffic, giving directions, riding their horses throughout the city, or when simply standing at the sidelines, they were friendly and composed. Thanks to Mayor Kirk, Chief Campanello, and all the officers on duty for helping to make this years’ Saint Peter’s Fiesta one of the best ever!
