30th Annual Annisquam Arts & Crafts Show
Annisquam is always lovely, but especially nice to visit during the Annisquam Arts & Crafts Show, now in its 30th year of presenting unique, quality art and crafts by Cape Ann area artists. You definitely want to have this on your calendar for a great thing to do Columbus Day weekend.
The Annisquam Arts & Crafts Show this year celebrates it’s 30th anniversary with an exciting collection of work from 40 different artists.
The art encompasses landscapes, portraits and abstract water colors while crafts include jewelry, fashion, ceramics, paper art and printed fabrics. The majority of the artists – including many who are new to the show this year – are from the Cape Ann area. One of the highlights will be an original painting entitled My Gloucester Sunset 2 by the award-winning artist Dorothy Arnold. Generously donated by her family, it will be sold through a special raffle during the course of the show.
The show will be held in the Annisquam Village Hall, 36 Leonard Street, Annisquam on October 11 and 12 from 10:00am – 5:00pm. Admission is free. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Annisquam Village Church. For more information, please contact deborahbird1@gmail.com.

Name that Humpback
We crossed whale watch off our “list of things that must be done even if we live here” this summer. I’m going through my photos and auto-awesome has strung some together and I post it in my Apple Sheeple forum and ten mintues later Phos has straightened out the horizon. Thanks Phos.
Looking at the animation I can see the white on the flukes of the tail that are the best way to identify humpbacks. People who study the humpbacks know them all by name and have seen the same ones over decades. I wrote the names down of the seven that we saw but lost my notes. But if you go to Coastal Studies page and under the photos click “download the latest version here” you will get a 72 page document with photos of a lot of whale tales.
Can you figure out the name of this whale? If you work with these whales you are saying, “of course that’s Suzie Cream Cheese”. But I made up that name.
They are ordered from very white to very black. It seems easy but I couldn’t do it. My daughter figured it out in five minutes. Can you? First three who name it correctly get a Pirate Rubber Duck autographed by RD herself. Clicking on the photo enlarges the animation. If it isn’t animated get a real computer or phone, Macintosh or iPhone 🙂

A Respite to the Rivalry
It was quite possibly one of the strangest last days of Red Sox baseball I’ve ever witnessed. It was indeed a pleasure to bear witness to Derek Jeter’s last game of major league baseball today within the walls of Fenway Park. The ball park was teaming with #2 Yankees shirts, pin stripes, and New York fans. It was almost difficult to remember that we were actually there to wrap up a Boston season and wish them well as we begin to dream of a better 2015.
In true Red Sox fashion, the organization planned an impressive send off to the beloved Yankees #2 and it is one of “those” days that will be written down in the well read history books that make the Red Sox, well, the Red Sox.

I Never Met a Fred I Didn’t Like
I meet a ton of people in my gallery, and always say the same thing to guys who have the Fred name: “Freds are always good looking, friendly, and intelligent.” This Fred from Delft, a city in Holland, was happy to represent from his country. While in the hospital last fall, I decided to delay this post because of the tragic loss of life on Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over the Ukraine. So here’s happy Fred, better late than never.

Please come for a presentation including recommendations about possible zoning and planning THIS COMING MONDAY September 29, 2014, from 6PM-8PM at Kyrouz Auditorium in City Hall. As a reminder, this series is devoted to Gloucester’s railroad station and surrounding areas. The first meeting was held back in March, and the 2nd in June.

Next Monday afternoon at the Community House I will be presenting my “Pollinator Garden” program to the Rockport Garden Club. I am looking forward to meeting with this great group of civic-minded gardeners. I see their signs all around town at the various gardens they maintain and they do a simply outstanding job! The program begins at 1:15 and the doors open to the public at 1:00.

Following the rhythm of the seasons, celebrated landscape designer Kim Smith presents a stunning slide show and lecture demonstrating how to create a welcoming haven for bees, birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. Native plants and examples of organic and architectural features will be discussed based on their value to particular vertebrates and invertebrates.
