Gordon Goetemann Artist Talk

Gordon Goetemann Artist Talk
Sunday, October 19, 7:00 PM
Free to the public
The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester. MA

The Rocky Neck Art Colony hosts an evening with Gordon Goetemann, artist and long time Rocky Neck resident, at the Cultural Center on Wonson St, Sunday, October 19, at 7:00 PM.

Many people here in Gloucester and on the East coast are familiar with the work Gordon Goetemann has produced and exhibited locally but very few have any knowledge of the Minnesota paintings executed over a span of forty years. Many of these works will be shown and discussed at this special talk on the heels of his recent exhibition at the Cultural Center. Taken together as a body of work, Goetemann talks about the role nature has played in the formation of his values and the content of his art as well as some innate characteristics of his work such as, a micro/macro sense of scale and the dichotomy of an illusory space and the facts of a flat picture plane.

Goetemann constantly affirms that he is a landscape painter, and more specifically, that he is a NORTHERN landscape painter. He talks about how his northern-European, Germanic heritage has informed his temperament, feelings and modes of expression. As he often says,” As an artist I have led two lives and worn many hats”.

This event is free to the public; donations to support the work of the art colony are always gratefully received.

Pet of the Week-Princess

princess

Talk about posh and style!  The way I pose for a photo shoot in my new outfit, gosh I am super surprised I haven’t been “discovered” yet.  I am sure if I showed up at the Cape Ann Animal Aid’s Dog Parade during the Rockport Harvestfest (at 11:30 am on Saturday, October 18th) I would be a top winner for sure! I go by the name Princess, I am cute, lovable, sweet and ready for my new family.  For more information on adoptable pets and upcoming events visit www.capeannanimalaid.org.

Ummm….Keep the Change

With Halloween just around the corner, I thought this would be fun.

I’d be out of this coffee shop so fast…I don’t care if I paid with a $100.  You can keep the change…just let me go!

Yikes.

We Don’t Know a Tree

TreeFace4985wmI was walking with a cane with Janet, and saw a face on a tree trunk. Amazing, I thought! Later I realized one could buy these ornaments in most garden stores. But this history goes much deeper. Trees have a special meaning for us, not only in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings with the Ents (giant trees), but in our current lives. George Washington remorsefully cut down a cherry tree and confessed, there is the memory of a Liberty Tree in Danvers Massachusetts, and when a grand old tree is cut down in your town in violation of local laws, it causes an uproar. Rightly so, because they’re so very important in our lives. In my bedridden time of illness in hospitals, and nursing/rehab homes, window views of trees were of prime importance to me. A tree is life, and encouraged me to carry on. I will never hurt a tree.

Sunset over the Moraine Farm greenhouse

Beverly, MA –October 13, 2014 – Moraine Farm, a property of The Trustees of Reservations, is offering Fall Farm Shares. Located in North Beverly, just minutes off 128 at exit 20, the farm provides local residents, area school children, and local food pantries with seasonal farm-fresh produce and provides community members of all ages meaningful volunteer opportunities.

With a successful summer growing season behind them, the Moraine farmers are turning their attention to feeding local communities into the chilly months of November and December. Farm Manager Gretta Anderson notes, “Most folks who appreciate locally-grown produce in the summer, dread returning to the grocery store in the fall. The quality, flavor and nutrition of local veggies just can’t be matched. Our long-term goal is to supply our members with local vegetable year-round.” Moraine Farm’s customers include the Beverly and Salem public schools, as well as members of their Community Supported Agriculture program.

Farm Shares, also known as Community Supported Agriculture or CSA shares, are available for November and December on-farm pick ups. Members purchase a “share” of the fall harvest now.  Then they come to the farm to pick up their share of the harvest and enjoy the historic Olmsted designed landscape. Fall Farm Shares are distributed every-other-Saturday afternoon beginning November 8. Friday afternoon pick ups are also available.

Sign on today to be a part of the Moraine Farm community! To purchase your Fall Farm Share and to learn more about the farm visit http://www.thetrustees.org/morainefarm or email Farm Manager Gretta Anderson, ganderson@ttor.org

Drone Video: A Thacher Island Sunrise

Jim writes, “A bird’s eye view of a spectacular sunrise on Thacher Island off the coast of Rockport and Gloucester. The Twin Lights guard mariners from the rocky coast and they also guide them back to safe harbor.” Shot and edited by Jim Capillo.

Atwater & Donnelly with Kevin Doyle at One World Coffeehouse

Award-winning, internationally acclaimed performers, Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly present captivating programs of traditional American and Celtic folk songs and percussive dance.  Elwood and Aubrey blend gorgeous harmonies and play an astonishing array of instruments including guitar, Appalachian mountain dulcimer, mandolin, tin whistle, harmonica, banjo, limberjacks, and other surprises including a thrilling interpretation of freestyle Appalachian clog dancing.  Married since 1989, Aubrey and Elwood have performed widely in the United States and abroad and their twelve recordings receive international airplay.  Joining Aubrey and Elwood is Kevin Doyle, a delightful, compelling performer of old style traditional Irish step dance and American tap dance as well as percussion and vocals. A lifelong dancer, Kevin was a U.S. Champion Irish step dancer in his early competitive years, and has been entertaining audiences ever since with his traditional style of “close to the ground” rhythms and intricate foot work.  Their performance is appealing to all ages, and with humor, audience participation, and a relaxed stage presence, Aubrey, Elwood, and Kevin explain song origins to give more relevance to the material.  From haunting melodies to lively jigs you will be delighted by the performance.

For reservations, please call 978-768-3690. This event is sure to be a sell out. Reserve by phone, pay at the door. For more information, please see www.oneworldcoffeehouse.org.

PrintIMG_3410This morning our dear family friend and Gloucester Historian Ronald H. Gilson stopped by for a visit with a personally signed copy of his book “An Island no More” and a copy of a new released book he was involved in supplying his knowledge about World War II  and  Gloucester’s fishing fleet for the book  “Battle Stars for the “Cactus Navy”” written by David D Bruhn for a history project daughter Amanda is currently researching. While enjoying warm cappuccino and a warm batch of Italian ricotta Donuts, Ron treated us to stories from his youth growing up on Cape Ann’s coastline during World War II “Battle of The Atlantic” and Gloucester working water front.

Swamp Creature?

I’m fascinated by this funky pond off of Bray Street in West Gloucester.  So much to look at.

I didn’t notice what is clearly an itty bitty and creepy man standing nearly waist deep in the water until I got home.  And I’m glad.
