-Midnight Speghetti is getting the party started at 9 with LIVE music.

“Retro funk mob Midnight Spaghetti & The Chocolate G-Strings has been satisfying discriminating dancers with monster grooves since January 2003. Their blend of classic funk, conscious frenetic rap, a killer horn section, and a contagious enthusiasm for life left people wondering what planet they came from, but more importantly, how they could get on that mothership.

Keeping the old school party vibe of Digital Underground and Trouble Funk alive, Midnight Spaghetti takes the beat and runs with it in progressive directions. There are definite similarities to the contemporary genre-bending hip hop group Ozomatli, as well as the ruckus attitude of the early Red Hot Chili Peppers, but listen closely to the lyrics and you’ll find the brainy humor to be reminiscent of Frank Zappa.”

Meeting at the Magnolia Library & Community Center

Neighborhood Meeting This Thursday 6pm at the

Magnolia Library & Community Center

Area leaders will be at the Magnolia Library & Community Center, 1 Lexington

Ave., this Thursday, October 30 at 6pm to discuss Sunday’s fire that took our

landmark Magnolia Pizza. This building was also home to cherished neighbors

and friends. Fire Chief Eric Smith and Mayor Carolyn Kirk (and Ward 5 Councilor

Bill Fonvielle, confirmation pending) will answer questions and hear your

concerns. All are welcome.

This is also a call for your help. Eight people who lost everything need our

assistance as they rebuild their lives. Monetary donations are being accepted by

the Magnolia Library & Community Center (www.magnolialibrary.org) and by

the MHS (magnoliahistoricalsociety.com). The Magnolia Library has been open

since Sunday and will be staying open this week for residents to drop off goods,

gift cards and checks to help these residents get back on their feet. Please see

magnolialibrarycommunitycenter on Facebook for a list of items needed and

for more information.

Nothing Says “Fall in New England” like…

Want to get back at your children for whatever they’ve done wrong or failed to do when asked so far this season?  A little Doughnut Revenge is fun for all.

Check Out Science All Around Us with Collin Keegan

Our Buddy Tom Ellis Of the Schooner Thomas E Lannon Is Involved In A very Special Project-

Science All Around Us with Collin Keegan

As captain and owner of the Schooner Thomas E. Lannon for the last 17 years, I’ve met thousands of people. Many stand out,

but one eight year old boy named Collin Keegan is exceptional.  I first met Collin on a Saturday morning Kids-go-Free sail.

It was obvious from our first conversation that he was special.  Collin has a huge curiosity about the world and likes to share

what he learns with other kids. What better way to do that than through video? After seeing the first edits of this film,

Collin came up with the idea of “Science all around us.” And  that became the title of the 5 episode video series we would

like to produce.

I’m asking you to watch this short video about Collin. If you like the idea of getting our youth excited about learning,

you can help by making a kickstarter pledge. Even if you cannot donate, you can help by sharing this video with your

friends, colleagues, or members of the organizations you belong to. And I know you’ll enjoy watching Collin!

Our goal is to produce a pilot video that will attract a distributor for the series.

Meet Collin Keegan. At first glance, he looks like a normal rambunctious eight-year old. He likes wearing a faded red baseball cap. He carries a pen and a notebook in his pocket just in case he needs to draw a diagram to explain a scientific concept to a friend or peer. He has a charming British accent and an endearing lisp. He’s cute—that you’ll be able to recognize easily—but something special sparks inside this small forty-pound boy when he’s sharing knowledge and learning with others. He has a truly infectious joy of learning and an amazing ability to recognize the creative way science affects and shapes our world. Through Collin’s eyes the rudder and steering wheel of a sailboat become a “mechanical connection system.” He knows intuitively the science that propels every day objects, and he applies scientific concepts and principles in a way that’s truly inspiring.

Man Card Revoked

There comes a time in the whole engagement process where a guy’s gotta have the balls enough to just say-  “No, I’m not gonna do a Spice Girls video with you.”  Bottom Line.  End of Story.

Zero chance this dude ever lives this down from the absolute beatdown his boys are gonna lay on him.

Calling all residents: the City needs YOU to help improve the Oval Playground

Calling all residents: the City needs YOU to help improve the Oval Playground

Palazola 2-19-2010 004

Ward 3 City Councilor Steve LeBlanc and the Community Development Department need your help on November 6th, 7th and 8th when the “Community Build for the Oval Playground” will take place. This is a great opportunity for civic-minded folks to roll up their sleeves, have some fun, and help install a new playground at Palazola Field!

Volunteers are asked to be available from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on one of the three community build days. Work will include installing concrete foundations, sorting, erecting and assembling playground equipment. To ensure safety and quality, volunteers will be trained and supervised by an experienced playground site specialist.

Dress in comfortable work clothes and closed toe shoes. Lunch and refreshments will be served.

The “Re-shaping the Oval Playground” project, which is funded by the Massachusetts “Our Common Backyard” program and federal community block grants (with project management funded through the Mass in Motion program), will not only improve the play area off Centennial Ave. near Harvard Street, it will provide more opportunities for kids to play and get fit.

The City is seeking 20 volunteers a day to help in the three-day effort (with an alternative extreme weather day on November 9.) Mayor Carolyn A. Kirk notes that with the “Renewal of Newell” last year and September’s completion of the update to Burnham’s Field, the City continues to build on its successes and create more opportunities for recreation, play, and support of active lifestyles.

Councilor LeBlanc, who reports that the existing equipment will be reused at Riverdale Park, hopes that community members, neighborhood associations and other community groups/organizations will sign up as community build volunteers.

Online volunteer registration is available at www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0F4DA9AE28A4F94-community/.

Community members can also contact Councilor LeBlanc at  SLeBlanc@gloucester-ma.gov.

Community Development Department Senior Project Manager Stephen Winslow also can be reached at swinslow@gloucester-ma.gov or at 978-282-8007.

You Know What Tiny Little Space Is Just killing It With programming?

The Gloucester Writers Center.

Jesus I’m not sure there’s another joint around that packs as many events per square foot into their space.

The folks running the place are just relentless.

Kudos to them.

And furthering the conversation about local arts, I’m not sure local writers get enough due.  It’s non stop with our awesome artists and great for them but let’s all take notice of all the awesome Working Writers in town.

Congrats on being big time relevant.

The Mary Prentiss Inn is truly the most welcoming of guest houses and yesterday while there planting the smell of the cook’s apple muffins baking wafted through the garden. A bit later, plates of warm muffins greeted guests; I couldn’t resist when offered. They were divine and are without a doubt the best muffins I’ve ever tasted! I’ve been promised the recipe and can’t wait to give it a go and to share!
