Catherine Ryan submits ~

unnamedQueuing and sharing. Poem in Your Pocket Day fell on April 30. The power of poetry and listening was unforgettable. Try it yourself next year—bring extra Kleenex.

Mayor Romeo-Theken encourages Gloucester students to send their original poem to the Office of the Mayor, 9 Dale Avenue, Gloucester, MA. She promises to read them! Students should include their name, which Gloucester school, their grade and teacher’s name.

Look for Poem in Your Pocket Day each April. It’s free and simple to participate. Carry a Poem. Share a Poem. For more information, search for Poem in Your Pocket Day (PIYP Day) Academy of American Poets (www.poets.org) or New York City’s excellent web site, http://www.NYC.gov/poem. PIYP Day started in NYC in 2002 inspired by theFavorite Poem Project established in 1997 by Robert Pinsky, former Poet Laureate of the United States. East Gloucester Elementary initiated PIYP Day in 2012 because it always celebrates literacy and arts. Students are encouraged to submit poems to the Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Public Library’s Poetry without Paper contest.

The honorary post for the Gloucester Poet Laureate was created in 1998. There have been four poet laureates: Vincent Ferrini was the City’s first, then John Ronan, Ruthanne Collinson, and the current Poet Laureate, Peter Todd. The Committee for the Arts helps select a new Poet Laureate every four years.

Special thanks to the students; Mayor Romeo-Theken; East Gloucester Elementary school teachers and staff– especially Literacy Coach Melissa Francis; EGS PTO; poet laureate, Peter Todd, and former laureates John Ronan and Rufus Collinson. Student Cal White read Peter Todd’s poem, Friendship, for morning message. Visit Gloucester’s website for more information and to read the poems shared by the poet laureates.

Underutilized Seafood Dinner to Benefit Maritime Gloucester

sam's avatarcapeanneats

As much as we hate to think about it, a lot of the seafood that was once associated with Gloucester is now no longer actually landed here. That said, there are still many, tasty species of fish that are caught off of Gloucester’s shores.

Latitude 43 and Maritime Gloucester have teamed up again for the Second Annual Maritime Gloucester Dinner to showcase underutilized, local seafood. The four-course menu highlights the fresh seafood and each course is thoughtfully paired with “underutilized” wine varietals, to offer new ideas for seafood & wine pairings.

The dinner will be held on Tuesday, May 19th at 6:30 PM at Latitude 43. Please call (978.281.0223) for reservations as space is limited.

A portion of the evening’s proceeds will go to benefit the Maritime Gloucester.

Thursday Night Blues Party with Dave Sag’s Tonight~ Ed Scheer, Jack Ward, Mario Perrett and Paul Foss 8:30 – 11:30 @ The Rhumb Line 5.7.2015

dave-sag-rl-4-3-2014-1 (2) Dave says,

We got a real fine band this week: The Euphemystics. Not really new but famous in my own mind as a favorite to work with. So, let’s get going! Our fearless leader this time is the diaphanous Mr. Edd Scheer, the singing, talking drummbler par excellance. He sings, he plays, he has amusing side effects on the band and crowd.  As agent provocateur, we have the commodious Mr. Jack Ward (Cleaver): glittering glitarist, singer, and blues composter; a real pleasure. On sax, we got that former teen idol  and Playgirl® spokesmodel with his jewel-encrusted uvula: Mr. Mario Perrett. From Maine, we got the guy who put the bunion (Bunyan?) in Bangor: Mr. Paul Foss. We’re old friends. I don’t know why. Add me, the severely addlepated basis of blunt, stir well, and have a great time. Don’t miss this. 8:30 till…

No time for drama.  Good luck to all those that try to drag me into their nonsense.   Life is way too short for grudges and negativity.

Every year that passes Buddhism and Buddhist principles make more sense.

I choose happiness and laughter. Try it on,  it’s a good fit.

A great sign of Spring/Summer

Don’t Miss Anita Diamant Reading at the Cape Ann Museum!

The Boston Girl at the Cape Ann Museum

Reading and book signing with refreshments from Ohana Restaurant

GLOUCESTER, Mass. (May 6, 2015) – On Saturday, May 16 at 3:00 p.m., in collaboration with the Bookstore of Gloucester and Ohana Restaurant, best-selling author Anita Diamant brings The Boston Girl book tour to Cape Ann. Join us at the Cape Ann Museum for a reading and book signing with light refreshments. Books will be available for purchase. This program is free and open to the public.

The Boston Girl is a coming-of-age story about family ties and values, friendship and feminism told through the eyes of a young Jewish woman growing up in Boston in the early twentieth century. Written with attention to historical detail and emotional honesty, The Boston Girl is a moving portrait of one woman’s complicated life in twentieth century America, and a fascinating look at a generation of women finding their places in a changing world.

Anita Diamant is the best-selling author of several books, among them theRed Tent, Good Harbor, and Last Days of Dogtown. Diamant has often used Cape Ann as an inspiration for her novels and The Boston Girl is no exception. The Rockport Lodge, a vacation house for working women of low and moderate income, plays a significant role in the main character’s life.
