So many options at Harborlight-Stoneridge Montessori School this summer….
Some amazing collisions in our summer skies this summer and to really appreciate it you have to look at the darkened sky over the sunset starting tonight. It will be pretty easy to pick out Venus as the brightest object above the horizon. Then check out Jupiter which is sitting above Venus. Kind of cool but why are we looking at them? Because from here to the end of the month, keep track of how Venus tracks towards Jupiter. If you do, by the last day of June you will think they are going to crash into each other! It is only on July first that Venus edges by below Jupiter.

Then we can go back to figuring out where the Rubber Duck shaped Comet 67P is. This will be easy because the lander named Philae the European Space Agnecy sent woke up last week! The lander is sitting on the Rubber Duck’s head and we may be able to get photos of what happens to a comet when it heats up this August as it sweeps around the sun. Can you imagine photos of the Rubber Duck’s head popping off? (Joey and Craig are hoping!)

And here is where I got the photo of 67P Rubber Duck at the Bikini Speedo Tourney. David Cox is amazed.

[EDIT two days later]. Finally, someone asks about the mushrooms, EJ, wants to know. When I first posted the David Cox shot I was sure I caught a dodge ball player watering a tree in the background. But I looked at all my shots and a moment later got a clear view of the innocent players getting dressed after the game.

Du Jun’s husband, Juntao Fang, is a Professor of Art at Janing University. He is trained in the Classical methods of Chinese brush painting, but his teaching focus and national reputation have been established for his contemporary expressionistic adaptations of the Classical style. How sweet is this little Butterfly Garden! Kudos to the students and staff at O’Maley Innovation Middle School for putting this together. Kudos also to Awesome Gloucester for knowing a good thing when they see it….as this garden was funded by them! I love all of the excellent tidbits of knowledge that are available while enjoying the beauty of the space. What a treat to happen upon this while headed in for a cold, 90 minute hockey practice!

2nd Instar Black Swallowtail Caterpillar ~ Willa Brosnihan Photo
Monday I had the great joy of being given the grand tour of the O’Maley Innovation School Butterfly Garden recently installed by Mrs. McGrath’s sixth grade class. We first had a screening of my film Life Story of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly and then went out to the garden to see the very same caterpillars!
The garden hits all the right notes with caterpillar food plants and colorful nectar-rich, butterfly attracting flowers. With the bed dug entirely by the students (you can see by the surrounding beds that the soil must have been incredibly compacted), prepped, and all planting done by the kids it is truly a fabulous accomplishment. You’ll see amazingly adorned handmade and beautifully painted informational signs and butterfly baths.
The garden was made possible though an award winning project created by students Emma Duckworth, Willa Brosnihan, and Kelsey Lowthers. For more information see the Awesome Gloucester Foundation O’Maley Butterfly Garden project page here .
