Captivating Moments: Music, Dance, and the American Landscape
The exhibit dates: July 1 – 27
Where: Beverly Public Library, 32 Essex St., Beverly, MA 01915
Photographer Thom Adorney of Beverly, MA will have a photography exhibit at the Beverly Public Library during the month of July. The exhibit will feature photographs of artists, such as Angie Miller, Livingston Taylor, Steve James, and Comedian Patty Ross, who have performed at The Cabot Theater, as well as landscapes from across America.
“I love capturing artists in that exquisite moment when they are lost in the act of creating,” says Thom. “There’s a purity in that.”
A New England native, Thom spent 35 years in Colorado and traveling the West. He’s photographed in the canyon lands of Utah and Arizona, the Colorado Rockies, and the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone in Wyoming. “There’s something supernatural about the vast spaces and dramatic landscapes in the West,” he says. “But the North Shore, with it’s rocky coastline, marshes, and towering woods, is no less beautiful. I’m delighted to have a new palette to work from.”
The photographs in the exhibit, as well as those on his website, will be available to purchase, with a portion of the profits being donated to renovating The Cabot Theater. “Volunteering at The Cabot is truly gratifying,” says Thom. “I feel that I am helping re-create a cultural hub for Beverly and the North Shore.”

Edited: I Should Have Done Some Research And Planned My Day Better To Be able To Check Out These Awesome Rockport Shops
Saturday morning and there had been a couple of shops we discovered on Instagram that we’d been dying to get to. Got into town around 9 and the Farmer’s Market was in full swing. Spoke with Lisa “That Nutty Redhead” and Sandy Farrell and a few other cool vendors and then made a great discovery in The Blue Lobster Grille which served up delicious homemade hash with poached eggs over English muffins and hollandaise for only $7.95. Tremendous discovery that was (we will be back I can assure you).
We took our time and headed down Bearskin Neck after but all the joints we wanted to check out were still closed at 10:00. They looked cool as hell though.

It’s on me that I didn’t realize that most of the stores wouldn’t be open by 10:00AM. Next Time I’ll Do My Research Better.
We went to Gloucester and had my eyeglasses repaired at Parrelli Optical on Railroad Ave- just dropped in, had them repaired in like two minutes and then hit up Lynzariums on East Main Street where I was able to get that awesome plant for the Big Jabroni. We were really eager to check out those shops in Rockport so we actually drove back in and did 5 loops around from 5 Corners down to Dock Square and around and couldn’t find a parking spot so we gave up and drove to Linens and Things to get some K Cups and then saw the new Amy Schumer movie Trainwreck (highly recommended). Our Rockport mission ended with some highs though in finding Blue Lobster Grill for breakfast and it’s always a nice walk down Bearskin Neck.
We will be back and can’t wait to finally get into these shops as well as some others.

What people may or may not understand is that there have been mandates to get states to get to certain percentages of green energy use and they are practically giving away these programs to try to get to those numbers. These credits and incentives are not going to last forever so you’d be foolish not to take advantage while they are available. Once the cat is out of the bag those incentives will most likely be cut in half or go away entirely.

Pre-Blackburn Challenge Outrigger Canoe Video From Scott Ide
Hi Joey,
Yesterday, my wife, Mary Kay, Cindy Perry, Scott Tyrrell and I paddled an outrigger canoe from Salem, MA to Corliss Landing on the Annisquam to get a 15+ mile practice in before next week’s Blackburn Challenge. We made this a one-way journey from where our club Boston Outrigger Racing Association keeps our canoes in Salem so that we can have the boat near Blackburn Challenge’s race start. Here’s a short video clip of the adventurous sea conditions somewhere past Kettle Island.

Queen Anne’s Lace Series
Although not a native North American wildflower, Queen Anne’s Lace has adapted to our climate well, reportedly growing in every state save for Idaho, Alaska, and Hawaii. A member of the Umbelliferae, or Carrot Family, Queen Anne’s Lace also goes by the common names Wild Carrot, Bird’s Nest, and Bishops’s Lace. The root of young plants, although white, tastes like a carrot, and when rubbed together between fingers, the foliage smells of parsley (also a member of the Umbel Family).
Queen Anne’s Lace is a caterpillar food plant of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly. Don’t despair butterfly lovers. Although the butterflies have been slow to awaken this year, I have high hopes that just as flowering plants are several weeks behind, so too will the butterflies emerge–only later than expected.

These NSAA artists, national award winners in every medium, invite you to join them in celebrating “The Year of The Artist!”.
The historic North Shore Arts Association opens an exciting Artist Members’ Small Works Exhibit, July 30 – August 29, and offers its First Juried Associate Members’ Show of the 2015 Season, August 6 – August 29. Receptions for both the Small Works and Associate Members’ Exhibits will be held Sunday, August 23, 1 – 3 pm. Refreshments served. Open and free to the public.
Many giants of the art world including Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Vermeer painted much treasured and highly prized small art works. The appeal of small works is manifold with flexible display options: the work can be clustered in and around other pieces; or placed in tiny, sometimes awkward spaces; or hung in discreet groupings, and easily placed on small easels atop a side table, and often lower price points are also an advantage. The main appeal, however, is to enjoy an intimate and condensed expression of the artist’s focused vision.
Come join the North Shore Arts Association as it celebrates its “Year Of The Artist!” with a Small Works members exhibition and Associate Members Show.
“Three Artists, Three Unique Demonstrations” will be a special demonstration and discussion of three unusual painting techniques. Saturday, July 25, 10:30 am at North Shore Arts Association. Open and free to the public.
Essex artist Susan Guest-MacPhail will discuss mixed media and demonstrate Gelli Plate printing that requires no presses, special inks or paper.
Gloucester artist Susan Daly is working with new mediums in Acrylic painting that create a variety of matte and glossy finishes and textures. These new techniques have earned her recent awards.
Gloucester artist Trudy Allen will demonstrate the trendy use of Alcohol inks which can be used on non-absorbent materials such as tiles and Yupo to create vibrant colors and unusual results.
The mini demos will accommodate questions and answers. The audience is encouraged to actively participate and share their own discoveries in any new and exciting art materials and their uses. Creativity has no boundaries!
The North Shore Arts Association’s galleries are open, free to the public, Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Noon to 5 p.m.
