The most delicious fundraiser of the year is nearly here – it’s time to get your restaurant registered or your event ticket ordered. Last year’s event included nearly three dozen food and beverage purveyors and nearly 300 guests!

The Cape Ann YMCA’s 7th Annual “Taste of Cape Ann” returns to Cruiseport Gloucester on Thursday, November 12, from 6-9PM. The event features the best of Cape Ann eateries offering food, wine and spirits for one $25 ticket price with the proceeds of ticket sales going to support Cape Ann YMCA Teen Service Initiatives.

The service trips enable local youth to spend a week working in communities hit by environmental and economic devastation. Teens participate in learning modules before and after traveling on school break to offer hands-on aid in areas of great need. PLOVERS AND SANDERLINGS!

Last week after presenting my Pollinator Garden program in Orleans and visiting the Nauset lighthouses, the next stopover was to my grandparent’s beach in Dennis, or I should say, the beach where my family summered as our grandparents are no longer living. It was close to sunset and I had the overwhelming wish to watch the sun go down from the same place where we perched atop the bluff and had watched the sunset thousands of times as children. It was more than a little dismaying upon arriving to see my Grandmother’s glorious seaside garden gone, replaced by grass, but even more so, to see that the great stairwell and wild rose-lined path to the beach, once enjoyed by all the neighbors, had been privatized. Despite all that and feeling very melancholy, I had a lovely walk along the shore, watched the spectacular sunset from the cliff’s edge, and came upon a gorgeous mixed flock of shore birds. They stayed awhile resting and feeding in the surf at the high tide line and none-too-shy, allowed for both filming and photographing in the fading rosy light.

GLOUCESTER INNER HARBOR ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANUP PROJECT IS UNDERWAY

An area has been cordoned off however, Maritime Gloucester is fully operational and accessible and there is a crew working onboard the Schooner Adventure.

National Grid has created a website to provide the public with information about the environmental remediation project in and adjacent to Gloucester’s Inner Harbor.

“From 1854 until 1952, the former Gloucester Gas Light Company (GGLC) operated a facility along the Gloucester waterfront to convert coal and oil into manufactured gas. Compounds from this Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) operation are present below the ground surface along portions of Harbor Loop and Rogers Street and in the harbor. This area is referred to as the former MGP Site and includes both upland and marine areas in and along Gloucester’s Inner Harbor.Aerialslider_cropped

Portions of the United States Coast Guard Gloucester Station, Solomon Jacobs Park, a commercial property owned by National Grid, commercial properties associated with fish processing, cold storage, retail operations, and portions of city streets are located within the upland areas of the Site. The marine area of the Site includes piers, floating docks, and other structures associated with some of the waterfront properties along Harbor Loop, as well as portions of the Federal Navigation Channel. Studies have confirmed the MGP Site does not pose a risk to current occupants on any of these properties or to members of the public.

As required by state environmental cleanup regulations (i.e., the Massachusetts Contingency Plan), National Grid is proposing to conduct cleanup (“remediation”) activities in both the upland and marine portions of the former MGP Site. Various state agencies, including the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act Office, have or will review and approve the remediation approach.” READ MORE HERE
