The Middle Street Walk is such a great way to experience community, celebrate the holiday season, and spend time with family.

As always, the program for this year is packed with some pretty special events such as choir concerts, buoy painting, a gingerbread house contest, story telling, a puppet show, holiday treats, guided walking tours, music, and of course…the lobster trap tree lighting ceremony at 4:30 at the Police Station.

We’ll have all kinds of goodies to eat and drink, and lots of good company and conversation, but the big news is all about who we’ve got speaking. Babak Tafreshi, the creator of “The World At Night,” will discuss his work and present a stunning program of his unique astrophotographs. Babak is an internationally known photographer and a tireless advocate for astronomy and the preservation of dark skies.

Composting at O’Maley Innovation Middle School!!! Funded by the Awesome Gloucester Foundation

940x470#Our idea is to establish a composting system in the cafeteria at O’Maley in partnership with Black Earth Haulers. Trash removal at O’Maley has gotten very expensive. In addition, many students are uninterested in eating school lunch and are just throwing it out. Our plan will reduce trash costs and provide costly compost for free as well as establishing a sustainable garden at O’Maley that will educate and feed the school, students and staff alike. The system will be one bin for each grade’s lunch with a small bucket in the kitchen for cooking scraps. Black Earth will take away our bins weekly and in return bring us compost which will benefit the school’s gardens and get everyone at the school more involved. We will be educating everyone on what is and isn’t compostable at school wide assemblies and short videos to view in homeroom (Black Earth’s bin’s also have helpful signs that inform students about what can be composted). Amazingly, many students at O’Maley didn’t even know we had a school garden. With the help of Backyard Growers, we hope to create more planting and harvestings days schoolwide providing fresh produce for everyone to enjoy. Along with Black Earth Haulers and Backyard Growers, our school chefs and faculty member Caitlin Sumner (8th grade science teacher) are on board. With the support of many, a well devised plan, and $1000 we can make this idea into a reality.

So, this guy joined our family over the weekend.  He couldn’t be sweeter and we are all in love.

I was trolling for a puppy for a couple of weeks as a surprise for the boys and checked the Salem Shelter and our own Cape Ann Animal Aid daily.

As a matter of timing, Minnow came from The Northeast Animal Shelter.

The first night that we had him we took a late night trip to Petco and were happy to bump into an adorable pup that had just been adopted from the Cape Ann Shelter!  They shared a quick meeting of the minds before we headed for home.

Now using cars to serve more clients more reliably, their commitment to the environment remains a top priority. Currently their service is limited to area’s of Boston’s North Shore.

Over the years Green Clean has provided green jobs within the community. A socially conscious company, Green Clean pays their star employees above the local average in an effort to provide rewarding, meaningful and sustainable work.

Now in its 10th year and having earned six Best of North Shore awards, Green Clean is ready to grow. They’ve been meeting with prospects and discussing the possibility of taking on a business partner and expanding service. A New York City native and a product of its public schools, Dr. Tyson is arguably the most publicly visible scientist in the country. He was attracted to astrophysics from an early age, lecturing on the subject as early as fifteen years of age. Although scouted for Cornell by Carl Sagan, he chose Harvard University, and did post-graduate work at the University of Texas, Princeton, and Columbia before being named Director of the Hayden Planetarium in 1996. He has become the public face of the scientific perspective for many and has hosted numerous television shows, including Nova and Cosmos, (which Sagan had once hosted.) He was at the forefront of the controversial movement to classify Pluto a minor planet and has spoken widely on the relationship between spirituality and science. In great demand as a commencement speaker, Tyson holds eighteen honorary doctorates, the most recent from UMass-Amherst. Another Tyson quote: “The universe is under no obligation to make sense to you.”
