Sayings to make you smile and take your mind off the middle east, the stock market and certain Presidential Hopefuls From Al Bezanson
“Hurry to the back of the ship,” said Tom sternly.
“What’s an angle over 90 degrees ?” asked Tom obtusely.
“I knew the gun wasn’t loaded,” said Tom blankly.
“I’ve injured my leg,” said Tom lamely.
“Use your own toothbrush !” Tom bristled.
“I mustn’t let the fire go out,” Tom bellowed.
“I work at a bank,” said Tom tellingly.
“Nice mirror,” Tom reflected.
“There’s someone at the front door,” Tom chimed in.
“Very well, you can borrow it again,” Tom relented.
“I’ve gone back to my wife,” was Tom’s rejoinder.
“Some you lose,” said Tom winsomely. “I just lost my flashlight” Said Tom in a delighted mannner.
“I just found out that magic is fake!” said Tom in a disenchanted way.

Nichole’s Picks 1/9 + 1/10
Pick #1: Â
Snowy Owl Prowl at the Crane Estate

Wide-open coastal sites are the location of choice for wintering Snowy Owls; common perches are dunes and salt hay staddles. In winters past, the owls have been frequent visitors to the Crane Wildlife Refuge. Join us as we hike the dunes in search of these magnificent birds. Unlike most owls, snowy owls are diurnal – they hunt and are active both day and night – so we have a good chance of sighting one even in the daylight hours! We’ll warm up with hot cider at the end of our hike.
Please note: We will be hiking up and down dunes, through soft sand, for approximately 2.5 miles. Dress for the weather to maximize comfort and minimize misery! Water is always good to have along. A spotting scope and/or binoculars are helpful when searching for snowy owls. Suggested ages 13 and older. Pre-registration required.

Pet of the Week- Jolene

Howdy! I’m Jolene and I am SOOOOO happy to meet you! I am a lovely older puppy who has a whole lot of houndy-love to give to my people! I am a southern gal, and based off my gorgeous looks, I’m thinking I am some kind of hound mix. What does that matter anyways? I know my personality will be what really catches your attention!

I still have to learn some basic obedience but I promise I will catch on quick if you promise to help me! I am a big puppy so want to play and still need to learn manners and my own strength so I might be a little much for small children. Do I sound like a perfect for you and your family? Then come down and meet me at Cape Ann Animal Aid’s Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter located at 4 Paws Lane in Gloucester. www.capeannanimalaid.org
How I felt after losing to the Dolphins Sunday…
Pats need to get healthy

Well, Hello Tessie
As it turns out, Wally the Green Monster, our beloved Red Sox Mascot, and son of Wanda and Walter, also has a younger sister….Tessie.
It seems that Tessie has been too young to live away from her parents up north in Boston for the past several years, but she is now older and has decided to make the move to join big brother, Wally.
Meet Tessie HERE!
And Watch Her Welcome Video HERE!

Just when everybody is feeling all warm and fuzzy about the Snowy Owl…
I may never sleep again.
Aaaand this is why I’m not a wildlife guy. Yes I know this isn’t a snowy owl. But its an owl. Owls doing owl things like choking down rats that are a third of their body size.

If I say it once I’ll say it a thousand times. Y’all can take your camping out and hiking and nature walks out in the wilderness where shit is just trying to eat you and danger lurks around every bunch of pricka bushes. I’ll take a nice comfy room with a view and posh accommodations every damn time.

HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COMMON EIDERS AND BUFFLEHEADS
Male Common Eider (center) with Male Buffleheads
Last week a reader wrote asking how to tell the difference between Buffleheads and Common Eiders. Both males of the species are black and white and both frequent our shores during the winter months. The easiest difference is that the Eiders are much larger, about 25 to 27 inches, while Buffleheads are about half the size of an Eider, only measuring 11-15 inches in length. Common Eiders are the largest diving duck in North America; the Bufflehead the smallest diving duck.
Eiders have a long sloping bill and move rather slowly.
Male and Female (right) Buffleheads
Buffleheads are sprightly and butterball shaped. From a distance the male Bufflehead looks striking, appearing black and white. Up close, the head feathers are a stunning iridescent purple and green. Both Eiders and Buffleheads can be seen feeding all along the Massachusetts coastline during the winter months. Buffleheads inhabit fresh water ponds and salt water whereas Common Eiders are sea ducks. During the summer breeding season, Common Eiders are found across Alaska and Canada all the way south to our region, whereas Buffleheads breed in the boreal forests and aspen parklands of Canada and Alaska.
I am sure you’ve heard of eiderdown pillows and quilts. The eiderdown, plucked from the female’s breast to line the nest, can be collected sustainably and safely after the ducklings leave the nest. Eiderdown has been largely replaced by down from farm raised geese.
