Team Mila’s Cancer Fund

image

Hey Joey,
I wanted to send this along to you.  If you choose to post to Good Morning Gloucester or not that is fine.  I realize things can get tricky when you support one cause and not all of them.  I figured I would just share the story and you can do what you want with it.

I don’t know if you ever met Terri and Bob Jones. They had 4 children; 3 daughters and one son.  Jessica (Jones) Martineau her husband and 3 daughters live in Nahant. Her 19-month old (twin) daughter was just diagnosed with cancer last week.  Friends and family have started a Go Fund Me page for them. https://www.gofundme.com/teammila
As I said the family is spread throughout the US, I believe one sister still lives in Gloucester.  I am sure there are many deep connections here and it would be great if the community could give back.

Captain Howard Blackburn Photo Submitted by Len Burgess

HowardBlackburnGloucester’s famous Capt. Howard Blackburn (1859–1932) pictured aboard the famous fishing schooner Gertrude L. Thebaud in the early 1930’s. He was an American fisherman and during a winter storm in 1883 got separated in his dory and feared lost from his fishing schooner the Grace L. Fears out of Nova Scotia. He rowed his dory and shipmate across a wintry ocean, freezing his hands and feet badly. Despite losing his fingers at sea he later prospered as a Gloucester, MA businessman.
Yearning for adventure, he twice sailed single-handed across the Atlantic Ocean, overcoming his disability and setting record times for the crossing. Both his vessels are at the Cape Ann Museum.

Who Drove Whom?

We spent a few hours at the New England Auto Show over the weekend.  The boys are kind of car freaks…although, I have to admit, they practiced much more restraint this year than last year.  There was far less running, jumping, and skipping through the expo….and MUCH LESS button pushing (my buttons and the vehicle buttons).  They found their favorites, found my favorites, and made a mental list of what they’d like to buy later in life to write down at home in new “car show notebooks” that they asked to purchase on the way to Boston.

We were happy to bump into Wally who told us (without words) that his younger sister, Tessie, was at home sleeping, when asked.  It wasn’t much later that we bumped into (almost literally…oops) John Henry and his wife, Linda Pizzuti Henry.  While I was busy contemplating if they were on the hunt for a new family car, a new race car for Roush Fenway Racing, or some new delivery vehicles for The Boston Globe…Finn was more concerned with whether Wally drove the Henry family to the car show…or whether the Henry family drove Wally?  Because, naturally they came together.

I didn’t take a single photo….but the boys took many.  Here are a few of theirs.

BEWARE: Best Buy & GeekSquad Phone Protection Plans are not as they seem

brandA couple of years ago, we got a new phone at Best Buy and they urged us to get the GeekSquadPlan Warranty for $9.99 a month. We were told that if anything happens to the phone (lost, stolen, damaged … anything), it will be replaced. “Really, anything? You mean if it’s dropped and the screen breaks, you’ll replace it?” we ask. “That’s right.”

Sounded like a decent plan, so we went for it. Now we’ve been paying $9.99 a month on our Best Buy bill for about 2 years and guess what, the screen cracked when the phone was dropped. So …. we walk into Best Buy and ask for it to be fixed or replace.

BUT WAIT …

Turns out there is a $150.00 deductible we were never told about. Now, we’re fairly careful people when it comes to signing contracts. We read them and we have lawyers read them if we’re not quite sure what they mean. But when you’re standing in a Best Buy store and the guy says they’ll replace the phone if anything happens to it and then there’s a little spot on a tiny checkout screen with a check box next to it asking if you agree, are you really going to say, “Hold on a minute, let me have my lawyer read this?”

But it gets worse. Having been scammed already by Best Buy and GeekSquad, we decided to check the fine print on-line for other protection plans and for the $8.00/month phone lease plans you can get through various carriers. As we expected, all of them have complex paragraphs that basically say you are gonna pay full price for this phone (around $600) unless you return it in 2 years in perfect condition.

Do you know anybody with a 2-year-old phone in perfect condition?

Caveat Emptor!

Pet of the Week- Pepper

pepper

Look, I am cute with my bright sunshine yellow eyes and little white spot!   I am a sweet and mellow lady.  I love to lounge around in a nice sunny window and just watch all the activity outside. I like nibbling on cat grass that folks are kind enough to grow for kitties like me here at the shelter.  I enjoy petting on the head and scratches under my chin. My name is Pepper and I was wondering if you could be my shaker of salt!  Visit www.capeannanimalaid.org for more information about Pepper and all the other animals waiting for homes here at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter.

GMG PSA- Don’t put herb balls in your vagina

Women putting herb balls in vagina to ‘detox their wombs’ have been warned of dangers

womb-detox.JPG
US firm claims its small ‘holistic’ herb packages ‘aid to correct’ endometriosis

Women are being warned about the dangers of a “womb detox” product after health experts said it could cause irritation and even toxic shock syndrome.

US firm called Embrace Pangaea is selling “Herbal Womb Detox Pearls” online, claiming the products “aids to correct” conditions such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts and thrush.

The pearls – small balls of perfumed herbs – are sold in one or two-month packages, with packages on sale for between $85 and $480.

Another package – claims to promote “vaginal tightening”, which it says works by “tightening the womb” so the “vaginal canal will shrink”.

The company says the herb pearls are designed to “cleanse the womb and return it to a balance state” by flushing out “toxins”

In a blogpost, the company said the pearls could be issued in the same way natural solutions like oranges and lemons can be used to counteract a cold.

But a sexual health expert insisted that not only were the “pearls” ineffective, but they could be dangerous.

Dr Jen Gunter, a US gynecologist, wrote a blog post debunking the company’s claims and saying these types of products – and the herbs used in them – have not been tested for vaginal use.

She wrote:  “Your uterus isn’t tired or depressed or dirty and your vagina has not misplaced its chakra.

“They want no real help from you unless there is something wrong and they will tell you there is something wrong by bleeding profusely or itching or cramping badly or producing an odor.”

She explained that the vagina was like “a self-cleaning oven” and putting anything like this in the vagina for long periods of time will increase the likelihood of bad bacteria growing and causing infection.

Tendercrop. Stands Repeating

I know that it was just about 3 months ago that I wrote about how in love I am with the new Tendercrop Farm location in Wenham, but it totally stands repeating.  Each week since, including just yesterday, I hear someone say, “Did you know that Tendercrop Farm opened a new location?”  Which tells me that all of Cape Ann is not aware yet…and they should be.

I’m lucky enough to only be about 5 minutes away when at work so I’ve been running over at lunchtime.  The other day I got a totally delicious chicken salad with walnuts and cranberries.

If you haven’t been you should really make a point to swing by!

Notes About iartcolony Gallery from Leslie Heffron

Hi Kim,
Tess Atkinson photographTess Atkinson –  She does photography on a large scale often face mounted to plexiglass and back mounted to aluminum. (Cherry blossoms)
Judith Scott LarsenJudith Scott Larsen – description taken from the gallery’s facebook page:  “Her work incorporates the figure as an empty vessel which is infused with a series of images from the history of art and science. The images are made by projecting transparencies onto the blank canvas of the human body. The projections reference various cultural inscriptions, biological patterning, and diagrams by visionaries attempting to understand the nature of our humanity.”
