Our friend Debbie Clark writes on behalf of her friend Anne Rearick,
“My friend Anne Rearick has 13 days left to raise the $17,500 she needs to publish her book of amazing photographs which document her visits to South Africa during the past 10 years. She is 3/4 of the way to her goal. Perhaps the good folk at GMG would share her project to support Anne’s efforts? Btw: she is the wife of local musician Willie Alexander, a teacher and an amazing photographer. Thank you for your help. Best, Deb.”
Township, Life in Post-Apartheid South Africa
Your support will help me raise money to fund a 160-page book of photographs that celebrates the spirit and strength of South Africans who face endemic violence, extreme economic hardship, and racism that has not abated, while all the time maintaining dignity, hope and courage.
About me:
I have been working as a documentary photographer for nearly thirty years. Over the past decade I have photographed life in the townships of Langa, Khayelitsha, Philippi and Mitchell’s Plain outside of Cape Town, South Africa. My work there began during a Guggenheim Fellowship year for my exploration of the culture of amateur boxing. During my trip, I met people living in Langa and Khayelitsha and began photographing the Luvuyo Boxing Club in Khayelitsha. I felt uncomfortable as yet another white person with a camera, photographing people with less resources and access to power. Subsequently, I cut my trip short, unsure of the work I was doing and who would actually benefit from it. Upon my return to the States, I looked at the pictures I had made and decided to go back to learn more, to further explore post-apartheid life in black communities. After over a dozen trips and more than a thousand rolls of film, I began to believe that the pictures mattered-they were not about people as victims, or about poverty, or any of those things one imagines life in black South African townships to be.
Outside the cities frequented by tourists and business travelers, in vibrant townships, I found beauty and strength and all the contradictions of being human in the people I photographed; a preacher testifying to his rapt congregation; a couple’s loving embrace at day’s end; the proud regard of my friend Sindi in her traditional Xhosa dress; the moving funeral of a young Sotho man; the poetry and grace of a girl dancing on a warm Sunday afternoon; and the striking face of “Dream Girl,” a young woman studying to be a traditional healer, a “sangoma.”
Best known by his pen name, Mark Twain, Clemens was a giant of American humor and letters. A Missouri native, he had brief careers as a miner and a river boat pilot before his short stories began to receive widespread notice. He was the keenest wit of his age. He wrote what many call the greatest of American novels, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885). Through a series of bad investments he lost all of the money he made from his books and a good deal of his wife’s substantial inheritance, which motivated him to begin many years of international speaking tours. The money from these performances eventually overcame his debt and added to his fame. He was a friend and advisor to presidents, scholars, and scientists, Nicola Tesla chief among them. Born when Halley’s Comet was in the sky, he died, as he predicted, when it returned.
Cruiseport was filled to overflowing with the joyful sounds of children laughing and parents socializing, all there to join in the fun of Art Haven’s 8th Annual Buoy Auction. The hundreds of buoys hand painted by local children were displayed in a fresh new layout with a “Haven Walk” surrounding the perimeter.
Andrew Luman did a fantastic job as the auctioneer and emcee (with Emily Bean above)
For the silent auction, beautiful buoy creations were donated by some of the most talented local artists.

Sheree Zizik once again generously donated Cruiseport, delicious food was provided by local restaurants and shops, and many area businesses donated buoy supplies, transportation, and event promotion. Thanks too was given to all who helped construct the Lobster Trap Tree, with thanks to the buoy auction committee, and a very special thanks to Traci-Thayne Corbett and Karen Conant.SEE MORE PHOTOS HERE Continue reading “A SIMPLY SPECTACULAR TURNOUT FOR ART HAVEN’S FAMILY FUN AND BUOY AUCTION!”→

GWC Fish Tales is seeking storytellers for our upcoming show: Tattoo Show and Tell. If you have a tattoo AND a story AND are willing to show your tattoo, then please contact Maureen Aylward at maureenaylward@comcast.net.
The next show is scheduled for Friday, February 12th; location to be determined.
Fish Tales is a live storytelling event that features nine local storytellers at each show. Each storyteller has five minutes to tell a true story that relates to a theme for the night. Similar to The Moth Radio Hour, performers stand before the crowd with just a microphone and let loose a story.
Over the last three years, Fish Tales has grown from a cozy storytelling evening at the GWC to a happening weekend event every five to six weeks with an audience of 80-100 people at every show. We have a fan base. People tell us that Fish Tales is their favorite event in Gloucester because it showcases real people, telling true stories from the heart. Our storytellers are vulnerable, ready to share, funny and honest, and our enthusiastic audience reminds us that it is a joy and privilege to sit and listen to someone else’s life for a while.
If you are driving on Essex Avenue, near Tally’s, there is a little store that sells all local honey and honey products. On Friday I went to get some honey drops and was impressed with their products. Take a ride over and enjoy the ambiance and some organic honey.

Joey, you and I have known each other 7 years now, and I have never felt more strongly about anything I’ve ever recommended to you than I feel about this.
THE DROWSY CHAPERONE!
This show is the funniest musical comedy I’ve ever seen.
It is GUARANTEED to make you laugh.
After you see it, in less than 2 hours, you’ll be on your way home, and you’ll be SO GLAD you spent the time and money to experience this outrageous, oddball musical comedy.
THE DROWSY CHAPERONE!
Never heard of it? Neither had I. But it won 5 Tony Awards on Broadway in 2006. And now I have the lead!
(What character am I? “The Man in the Chair!” They didn’t even give me a name! What’s up with this?)
Plus, this is the ideal theatrical experience for anybody who hates theatre.
In this show, literally the first words you hear are: “I hate theatre!” And it goes downhill from there!
THE DROWSY CHAPERONE!
I’m tellin’ ya, Joey, if you only see one community theatre production this year, see The Drowsy Chaperone.
And you save a third of the ticket price by ordering ahead.
Tickets are $25 at the door, but only $18 (plus service charge) online.

A Sweet Addition to Cape Ann: New Bakery Cake Ann Opens Saturday at The Commons Gloucester, MA, January 21, 2015 Cake Ann www.cakeann.com , a new scratch bakery featuring fine cakes and pastries using the best ingredients, will open its doors at 214 Eastern Avenue this Saturday, January 23rd at 8am. The newest retail resident of The Commons Gloucester, Cake Ann will feature a daily batch of fresh cupcakes, cookies, scones, and its signature “Kouign Aman” pastries. The brick and mortar location is the next step for pastry chef Inga McCarthy, who began Cake Ann in the tiny kitchen of her home in Rockport. Since starting the business as a vendor at the Rockport Farmer’s Market last year, Cake Ann quickly made a name for itself with a variety of unique cupcakes and a small French pastry called the Kouign Amann, a buttery and sweet flaky cake that soon stole the show. “We started with twenty on the first day and were sold out in the first thirty minutes the market was open,” says McCarthy. “I doubled the batch each week, and we’d still sell out within the first hour. People were coming to stock up for the whole weekend.” At McCarthy’s new Cake Ann bakery, the daily menu will include her signature creations, as well as a selection of cookies, muffins, scones and quiche made fresh daily using the highest quality ingredients including organic flours, butter and cream, Valrhona and Callebaut chocolate and eggs from Seaview Farms in Rockport. The shop will also feature fresh brewed coffee from Atomic Coffee Roasters of Beverly. McCarthy says it was their weekly appearance at the farmer’s market that introduced her to the bounty of local farms on the North Shore. “That was the unexpected surprise,” she says. “Being there every week helped us build relationship with so many local farmers.” Cake Ann’s baked treats are a reflection these locally grown partnerships, featuring whole wheat flour from Alprilla Farms in Ipswich, carrots from Seaview Farm in Rockport and seasonal fruits and vegetables from Arrowhead Farm in Newburyport. With the expanded offerings at the new storefront, McCarthy won’t abandon her roots. Cake is still at the forefront of Cake Ann’s menu, and the new shop will offer custom cakes for events, celebrations and weddings. Orders for standard size cakes require 48hour notice and can be reserved by visiting the store or calling 9788654100. “We’re excited to meet a whole new group of customers in our community,” says McCarthy. “And we’re thrilled to be building our business here on Cape Ann.” Cake Ann will be open Saturday from 8am to 4pm, Sunday from 8am to 12 noon, and Wednesday through next Saturday from 8am to 4pm, with expanded hours in the coming weeks. The shop’s official Grand Opening celebration will be held on Saturday, February 6th. Contact: info@cakeann.com Inga McCarthy 9788654100 http://cakeann.com/
