Gloucester: When the Fish Came First

My View of Life on the Dock

Besides my job, Thursday was a very busy day, did a Podcast with GMG at Cape Ann TV, went to the volunteer expo at Cruiseport which was outstanding, and then stopped into the Cape Ann Photography Club’s meeting at the Magnolia Library. Great attendance and always nice to meet other photographers.
So, we left Rockport in the wee hours of the morning, waited for some friends at the “Fast Freddy’s” parking lot in Beverly and hit the road. By 5:30 or so we were skirting New York, by 2:30 we were stopping for a quick lunch in southern Virginia, and by 6:45…with only 5 1/2 hours to go to Orlando, but no hotel room available until our check-in time later on today, we decided to call it quits in St. George, South Carolina.
With time to kill, we even did the obligatory drive-by South of the Border long enough to use the restrooms and take one quick photo to prove later to the children that “yes” they’ve been there.
We checked in to a perfectly average Comfort Something-or-other and walked next door to Skynaards Bar and Grill…”where people come to meet and eat.” The kids ran off some steam in the corn hole pit (yes, that’s right…judge if you must) and we ordered some “we’ve-been-on-the-road-forever-and-we-could eat-our-own-arms” type of grub.
With no WiFi and just my iPhone to fire off a blog post, I was more than happy to shoot for sleep at 9:45. The boys were still fighting the Sandman trying to watch hockey highlights as I wrapped up.
Just as I finished and went to go make sure that everything was charging, the door was locked, and the boys weren’t going to fall off the edge of their bed, Finn muttered, “today has been really long.”

Gloucester beat Landmark yesterday in straight races 4 to 0. This is the first official race of the season and we’re off to a great start!
After vacation, SailGHS will return to three races in a row, Monday through Wednesday.
Monday, scrimmage vs. Wayland at home
Tuesday, scrimmage vs. Manchester at MSA
Wednesday, race against Beverly at Jubilee Yacht Club in Beverly
Enjoy your vacation! but keep your mind in the game.
Sincerely,
Guy Fiero, Coach, SailGHS

We were talking on GloucesterCast 177 about the One Hour At A Time Gang and how great it is and I told Donna I’d donate money toward getting the team new Shirts for the people that volunteered regularly.
So if you would like to show your appreciation to Donna and her band of merry litter picker uppers, buy one of these hoodies. 100% of the profits will go to her for the cause. All profits from purchases of Hoodies through Sunday will go to Donna.

A few clips from the closing night performance of Beeman Memorial School’s fantastic production of Beauty and the Beast. The cast and crew did a magnificent job, so good in fact, it was hard to believe that the players are all only in elementary school. A huge shout out out to the cast, the crew, and the co-directing team of Heidi Dallin and Beth Goldberg!

Why Are Harley Motorcycles Called Hogs?
By Mario Corbin
eHow Contributor
The term “hog” has been associated with Harley-Davidson motorcycles since the early 1920s. Many businesses like Hula-Hogs in Maui, Hawaii, and Hogs-R-Us in Cork, Ireland, draw business based on this association.

Sailor Stan’s will be reopening tomorrow (Saturday) at 7:00am, and Sunday too. Just weekends for now, but that’s when most people probably want to go break their fast on the Neck this time of year. Karen Roberts has been working all winter on her beautiful and very affordable sea glass jewelry, and will have some on display. Wayne has been busy at work painting all winter, as you can see from this colorful, iris-filled beauty of Sailor Stan’s. Spring is Here! Come on down the Neck.
It is also the final weekend of the Rocky Neck Now exhibit at the Cultural Center, so get some eats and take in some art. I’ll be gallery sitting from 2-4 on Saturday, so stop in and say hi. The closing reception for the show will be Sunday from 2-4. Elynn Kroger Gallery is open, as is John Nesta, and possibly Side Street too.

Save Our Shores Gloucester has closed on the property at 166-178 Atlantic Road!
The next step will be to place a conservation restriction on the land that will protect it and preserve it in perpetuity for the benefit of all forever.
Save Our Shores Gloucester thanks all of those who provided financial support, contributed time to attend meetings and donated supplies and materials to make this effort so successful.
On Friday, May 6, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at the site to celebrate victory over development along the Back Shore, a spot revered by so many people from Gloucester, and from many places around the globe.
Thanks to Marilyn Hyde, realtor extraordinaire, for her help in securing this property.
We look forward to seeing you on May 6. Details to follow.

Since National Poem in Your Pocket Day falls on April 21 this year–during school vacation–here are a couple local reminders from two libraries:
From Valerie Marino at Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Public Library: “Attached is a photo of our poetry display: “Take a poem, leave a poem”. There are copies of poems in the basket, most by local poets (Lisa Manning, Tom Revson, Gwen Carr, Vincent Ferrini and Charles Olson); everyone is encouraged to take a poem or leave one – (an original or one special to them). We will gladly make copies so many people can enjoy them!”

At TOHP Burnham Public Library in Essex you can pick a poem from the library’s poem tree to read to friends and family. On the 21st they have planned a special evening of poetry for all including local poets Kent Bowker, Karin Gertsch, and former Gloucester Poet Laureate, Rufus Collinson. Reminder: the library has temporarily moved out of the Town Hall and is open at 245 Western Avenue.

Poem in Your Pocket Day is everyday for some people, like my friend’s quiet poem tucking at Duckworths. I bet an FOB found one.

Formed in 1999 by lead guitarist JJ Rassler (founding member of influential Boston bands DMZ and guitarist / producer for The Queers) and singer/rhythm guitarist Jen D’Angora (The Dents, Jenny Dee and the Deelinquents), along with bassist Mike Yocco and drummer Dan Styklunas, The Downbeat 5 draws on British invasion bands like the Yardbirds and Animals, spikes the brew with the toughest female vocals this side of a women’s prison riot, and tops it all off with decades worth of aggression, attitude and volume. The band is often heard on Little Steven’s Underground Garage and is featured on his “Coolest Songs in the World” compilation series. The DB5 have shared the stage with such acts as; Holly Golightly, Magic Christian, The Hoodoo Gurus, The Pretty Things, The Knitters, The Blasters, The Zombies, Flaming Stars, Preachers Kids, Muffs, Dick Dale, Detroit Cobras, Sylvain Sylvain, Jayne County and countless like minded bands. Their relentlessly tough live shows have sometimes been augmented with the guest appearance of friend and Animals guitarist, Hilton Valentine.
