Wow and double wow! What a treat to see this splendid ship up close!!!
Many thanks to Paul Morrison and his sister Kathy. Paul called a few days ago with the very generous offer to show me the osprey nest on the Annisquam, spotted by Kathy, about half a mile from the Marina, and best seen by boat. On the way to see the nest, we spiedĀ the Oliver Hazard Perry just beginning to make its way into Gloucester Harbor. Paul, again very generously, suggested we detour out to see the arriving tall ship. And it is a beauty! The Oliver Hazard Perry will be in Gloucester Harbor for one night only however, look for its return in September, when it will remain in GloucesterĀ a few days. I believe, at that time, folks will be able to tour the boat!
The Oliver Hazard Perry is the largest civilian sailing vessel in the United States and the first of its kind to be built in over 100 years. Its mission statement is to, “provide innovative and empowering education-at-sea programs to promote personal and professional growth.”

About the ship, fromĀ the ships’s website: The hull for this new ship was initially begun in Canada and continued at various shipyards in Rhode Island since 2008. These included; Promet in Providence, Senesco in North Kingston,Newport Shipyard and she is now being commissioned in Portsmouth at the Hinckley Marina. Once complete she will move to Newport to theĀ new dock at Fort Adams.

The ship is named for Newport’s War of 1812 naval hero Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. SSVOliver Hazard Perry is owned and operated by the non-profit Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island, and represents Rhode Island and our rich nautical heritage wherever she goes. Her home port will beĀ Newport and she will sail the world as an ambassador of our proud state.

Objectives
- Build and maintain Rhode Island’s own tall ship that is the largest, privately owned active Tall Ship in the US.

- Work with Rhode Island marine trades to establish training programs and to create job opportunities.
- Represent Rhode Island in American and foreign ports.

Representing Gloucester
Normally, I don’t wear advertising;Ā however, when it is swag from good friends at Cape Pond Ice, Neptune’s Harvest, Schooner Adventure, and GMG, I make an exception, especially when on vacation cruising Penobscot Bay proud to represent my city.
Last week in the town of Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert Island there was a chance meeting of the crews from three Gloucester sailing vessels: Arts and Letters from Anninsquam, Mugup from Smith Cove, and my own Pensive Flyer from Magnolia. Our gamĀ blocked the sidewalk on Main Street for quite a whileĀ as we discussed possible destinations and anchorages. It is a fine thing to be a small part of our community of sailors.

With four fish landed, lots of Ā money raised, fantastic music, delicious food and drinks, and a good time had by all, I’d say this year’s Bluefin Blowout was a pretty big success.

Gloucester Rotary Club Presents its Annual Comedy Show on September 1
The Rotary Club of Gloucester MA will hold its annual Comedy Show Fundraiser on Thursday, September 1, 2016, at Cruiseport Gloucester, located at 6 Rowe Square in downtown Gloucester, MA. This yearās Comedy Night features comedians Tony V., Steve Calechman, Chris Dimitrakopoulos, and Dave Rattigan. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm.

The Rotary Club of Gloucester MA will hold its annual Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser on Saturday, August 20, 2016, from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in Stage Fort Park, located on Hough Avenue in Gloucester, MA. This popular event takes place concurrently with the Gloucester Waterfront Festival, which is sponsored by the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce and is held in Stage Fort Park on Saturday-Sunday, August 20-21, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. both days.
Tickets for the Pancake Breakfast are $7 per person and are available from any Gloucester Rotarian or at the Rose Baker Senior Center at 6 Manuel F Lewis Street in downtown Gloucester, Bank Gloucester, Cape Ann Savings Bank and at Institution for Savings; Gloucester branch locations only. Tickets will also be available on the morning of the breakfast.

Fat Tuna Brings in a Pretty Fat Tuna
The 2nd fish in at this year’s Bluefin Blowout was landed by Fat Tuna! Ā Congratulations.
A beautiful fish weighing in at 412 pounds was just a little too small to take the lead from Shark Bait….and was soon outweighed by the Miss Fern’s 536 pound fish that hit the dock just 15 minutes later. Ā Good showing though!
