A few days ago I asked for help in uncovering photos or other information regarding the old “muster field”or fields described in Catherine’s post of August 16. There has been a vigorous response to my request, including suggestions for the location of the civil war field and theories regarding the possible colonial era field.
The jackpot was hit when Jude Seminara sent me photos of the inscriptions in granite described in the 1954 essay contained in the August 16 post. Obviously, the location of these carvings is known to Jude and others, but without the owner’s permission, I feel I shouldn’t publicly disclose that information.
The inscriptions are described in the 1954 essay as follows:
At the extreme end on a flat smooth ledge there is the record of at least one company of soldiers who trained there. Carved in the granite and still in good condition is the insignia of a crossed cannon, musket and sabre. Below are the letters “D. L. I.,” which I found afterwards stood for “Danvers Light Infantry,” then the letters “M. V. M.,” standing for “Massachusetts Volunteer Militia” and then “Co. C 17th Regiment, Capt. Fuller, 1861.”
On another smooth ledge adjoining are numerous initials, presumably of some of the men who camped there. The growth of the moss and lichens on the granite show conclusively that the carving was made on or about the year indicated, 1861.

Many thanks to Jude for sharing these photos. He and I are planning an autumn excursion into the Old Thompson Road area to search for other relics, perhaps even discover the location of the circa 18th century training field mentioned in the article and supported by entries in town records.

Join us this coming Thursday as we harvest the hops we’ve been growing on-site at the pub and around the North Shore. Help us pick a mess of cascade & nugget hops. Fill a bucket and get a free Cape Ann Brewing pint glass!
We’ll use these hops in our Brew The Charles entry, our Homeport Pale Ale. We’re also pulling out our “Hopulator” and will load it up that night for some freshly infused beers. We’ll have live music, a homebrew seminar and, of course, great beer!
These hops, grown on-site at the Pub at Cape Ann Brewing, along with other locally sourced hops will be harvested and picked.
Instameet at the Cape Ann Museum An afternoon of photographic exploration.
 The Cape Ann Museum is hosting an Instameet inspired by the special exhibition Design/Build: The Drawings of Phillips and Holloran, Architects on Saturday, August 20 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Participants will meet at the Museum to take a peek at the exhibition and receive a guide of the city before setting out into the surrounding neighborhoods. Instagrammers are bound to find unusual examples of architecture within America’s oldest seaport—doors of historic homes, reflections in windows, docked ships with fishermen and unique light bouncing off the ocean.

Following some exploration and picture-taking, everyone will reconvene in the Museum’s courtyard at about 4:30 p.m. to review the day’s findings, comment on the event and share contact information. Come meet new people, share opinions, celebrate creativity and explore a city that has inspired artists for centuries.

MARK SHASHA UPCOMING WORKSHOP
Among North Shore Arts Association’s many exciting educational opportunities this 2016 season is popular Marblehead artist and teacher Mark Shasha’s  “Capturing the Living Landscape”, a plein air Oil Workshop to be held on Saturday August 20 & Sunday, August 21, 10AM – 4PM.
Drawing on his thirty years of experience, award winning Shasha will share his insights to help you tackle the problems and challenges of plein air oil painting.  He will address issues of composition, using traditional materials, and methods to help you conquer the challenges and reap the rewards of capturing the natural color, light and mood of a landscape on canvas.

Gallery 53 on Rocky Neck is sponsoring a series of artist demonstrations for the 2016 season. On Saturday, August 20th, Jane Keddy will demonstrate silk painting. Keddy is a printmaker, graphic designer and fabric artist. Her primary medium is silkscreen printing, which she learned at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education in the early 70s and has been practicing ever since. She studied graphic design at MassArt in the 1980s. In addition to Printmaking, Jane has always been interested in the textile arts. She began with batik, moved into screen printing on fabric and then began to explore shibori, the Japanese method of resist-dyeing. Recently she has joined Ten Pound Studio in Gloucester where she is learning silk painting. At the same time she is teaching studio members other surface design techniques such as shibori with indigo dyes and printing on fabric.

Great night with  threatening clouds. The band played until8is because those clouds gave way to rain. There were so many familiar songs with some originals here and there. This band was real sweet and and so smooth. I think it’s safe to say the crowd loved them… I know I did.

I will be moving from Rocky Neck over the cut bridge to Kent Circle on September 1 to resume caring for my mother in a new, larger place. On Saturday and Sunday, August 20 & 21 from 9-6:00, I will be having a moving yard and art sale which will include prior years paintings, photos, etc., plus art supplies, tools and equipment (including frames, glass, kraft paper, paints, brushes, picture wire, etc.), jewelry making supplies (findings, stones, beads, etc.) and more. Hobbit House Studio, 1 Wonson Street (behind Sailor Stan’s) on Rocky Neck. Come by and say hi, and find a treasure or two.

The Gloucester Rotary Club will publish a 12-month Cape Ann photo calendar for 2017 as a fundraiser. All profits will go to the Gloucester Rotary Club’s efforts to raise money that supports the many community and international activities in which the club is involved.
In Order to publish a beautiful calendar, the Club is requesting high quality digital photos that show the unique beauty of Cape Ann throughout the year. Gloucester photos are preferred, but images from other Cape Ann towns will be considered. Water—either ocean or tidal river—must be visible somewhere in all entries. Images from each season: winter, spring, summer and fall are encouraged. A selection committee from the Rotary Club will make the choices.
