Photographer Paul Cary Goldberg, whose photographs are included in the special exhibition Voicing the Woods: Jeremy Adams, Instrument Maker, worked closely with Adams over a period of three months in an effort to capture the complexity, mechanics, beauty, detail and personality of the instruments and their maker. The resulting photographs, commissioned by the Museum, offer insight into the work and the process, highlighting the exquisite detail and craftsmanship of the instruments and underscoring the breadth and volume of Adams’s work.

Paul Cary Goldberg’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States, and in Florence, Italy and Tel Aviv. He is the recipient of numerous grants and awards for his photography and his work can be found in the collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Boston Public Library, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Cape Ann Museum. Goldberg has been represented by Pucker Gallery since 2003.

This program is $10 for CAM members / $15 for nonmembers (includes admission). Space is limited; program is expected to fill quickly. Tickets/reservations are required and can be purchased online at Eventbrite or by calling (978) 283-0455 x10.

This program is accessible. Voicing the Woods is on view at the Cape Ann Museum October 22, 2016 through February 26, 2017.

HOLY CANNOLI–A PENGUIN IN GLOUCESTER–AT NILES POND–NOW I’VE SEEN EVERYTHING!

great-cormorant-juvenile-niles-pond-gloucester-massachustts-2-copyright-kim-smithThose were my initial thoughts upon catching a glimpse of a large black-feathered and white-breasted mystery creature from across the pond. I entered the narrow opening through the shrubby growth that surrounds Niles Pond and inched my way closer to the sleeping bird, when up popped its head. Naturally not a penguin, it looked like some sort of cormorant, just not the ones we see on a daily basis on the shores of Cape Ann.

I later learned it was a Great Cormorant. As you can see from the photo below, in the early morning light and from a distance, its not hard to imagine a penguin.great-cormorant-juvenile-niles-pond-gloucester-massachustts-copyright-kim-smith

I wrote the title of the post thinking that possibly we could all use a beautiful creature to learn a bit about and a touch of humor, too. It has been a very difficult and divisive election and a very tough day for slightly more than half of the American electorate. Let’s keep our chins up, and realize going forward that it is preferable to build bridges together than to construct walls that divide.great-cormorant-juvenile-niles-pond-gloucester-massachustts-3-copyright-kim-smith

Back to Great Cormorants. With its white-feathered breast, this one is a juvenile. Great Cormorants, although widespread in much of the Old World, are generally only found in North America along the Atlantic Coast. Great Cormorants are described as heavy-bodied seabirds and larger than the usually seen Double-crested Cormorant. I watched him depart, his take-off was heavy and clumsy, but perhaps that was because he had awoken only moments earlier.

double-crested-cormorant-niles-pond-gloucester-massachustts-copyright-kim-smithCompare the Double-crested Cormorant (above photo). Massing in great numbers as they fly along the Annisquam and Essex Rivers at this time of year, the Double-crested Cormorants are ubiquitous. They are a true North American species and breed, winter over, and migrate along the shores of Cape Ann. great-cormorant-juvenile-niles-pond-gloucester-massachustts-1-copyright-kim-smith

Great Cormorant — notice the white throat pouch of the Great Cormorant, versus the orange pouch of the Double-crested Cormorant.

99 Thatcher Road: construction across from Good Harbor Beach

This location was the former site of a restaurant and parking lot (Olivia’s and Amelia’s before). The first photograph was taken just over a year ago, October 4, 2015. I wasn’t setting out to document the new construction; the nocturne grabbed me. Flash forward a year; the new build is progressing. 78 Thatcher.

The Election is Over…Let’s Think Hallmark Christmas Channel

As I write this, poll results are beginning to trickle in.  As you read this, we have a new President.  Either way, I’m ready to think happy thoughts.  And, yes, while I know it is painfully early….the Hallmark Channel Christmas movie schedule makes me happy.

Cheesy as all heck….good for a few tears….the same “actors/actresses” confusingly appearing as different characters night after night… Good Times.  Ho Ho Ho.

With 45 days to go until we wake up with stockings full, there are a whole lot of holiday movies to watch first!

Join local author Eric Haggman of Magnolia, MA for a book signing of his new novel, The Apology, on November 10th from 6-9PM at Prince Pizzeria in Saugus, MA

Join local author Eric Haggman of Magnolia, MA for a book signing of his new novel, The Apology, on November 10th from 6-9PM at Prince Pizzeria in Saugus, MA. The proceeds from each book bought now and through the end of Veterans Day on November 11th will be matched by Eric and his wife Emily, up to $1,000.
All funds raised will benefit local disabled veterans through the Massachusetts Elks Association in support of the Disabled Veterans Service Committee. The Haggmans hope that this donation will make the lives of wounded veterans a little easier and a bit brighter as they thank them, and all members of the military, for their service. On November 10th, any military person that joins the book signing event will receive a free book (must be dressed in military uniform or show a military ID).
There will be free pizza generously provided by Steve and Trisha Castraberti of Prince Pizzeria with the purchase of a book.
About The Apology: Filmmaker and ex-Marine Christian Lindstrom returns to Vietnam to shoot tourism commercials, only to confront the agony of his past there and the power of the Asian underworld to control political events, including the creation and the whitewashing of Japan’s history itself. For producer Nachi Tanaka, it is the story of the shameful sins of the fathers coming back to hurt and haunt her family generations later. For the Japanese government, it is a coup d’état engineered by powerful business interests with the Japanese mafia, the Yakuza, doing their murderous bidding.
