Get a jump on the Super Moon Today at 4:11 PM

Do not listen to the naysayers. The Super Moon really is Super. 30% brighter. If you are standing on the southern end of Long Beach at 4:11 PM the Super Duper Moon will rise among the twin towers of Thacher Island. Go to The Photographers Ephemeris (click to app) and you can move around and precisely find where you need to stand to split the uprights of the Towers with the moon.

Pro Tip: Leave your camera home. Someone else will take a great photo. Instead of fussing with a camera just stand there with your dog and enjoy the earth rotating under your feet so the moon magically appears on the horizon. I would also recommend smoking a doobie but it is not legal. Yet.

On Monday the moon will rise in about the same place but at 4:55 PM. The sun will already have set at 4:20 PM so it might be even more super than Sunday.
On Monday the moon will rise in about the same place (5 compass degrees north) but at 4:55 PM. The sun will already have set at 4:20 PM so it might be even more super than Sunday.

The property is legally described as Assessors Map 184, Lots #5 and #9, also known as 70-74 Thatcher Road. Property information from a quick on line search:

Failed 2012 CPA bid has background on the property and a description of habitat and wildlife birds etc

(2014) Excerpt from Friends of Good Harbor:“… Brierneck Realty LLC has begun construction on twelve condominiums on property at 70-74 Thatcher Road at the corner of Witham Street.  The new owners are Paul St. Hilaire and Robert Messina, who purchased the fully permitted property from James Griffoni and partners. The construction of condominiums at the edge of Good Harbor salt marsh was fought in court by the City of Gloucester on behalf of the Zoning Appeals Board.  The property owners had received a comprehensive permit from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Housing Appeals Committee based upon the inclusion of 25% affordable units under Chapter 40B and won final approval from the Supreme Judicial Court in 2011.  The Gloucester Building Department granted a final permit in the spring of 2014.  The Friends of Good Harbor held a purchase and sale agreement with the owners in 2013 with the intention of restoring the property to salt marsh, however the agreement expired and the original owners were unwilling to sign a renewal.  The new owners expect to build the condominiums in stages, with the first cluster now under construction and targeted for completion in 2015. Representatives of FOGH have met with the new owners about their plans for construction as well as design and landscaping details.  In addition, conversation is taking place with respect to coordinating the early-stage planning of a Thatcher Road walkway, for which the new owners have offered their cooperation. Planning for the construction of six condominiums across Witham Street is also underway with other owners on the Thatcher Road site of Olivia’s Restaurant (formerly Amelia’s).  The property has been rezoned for residential construction…”

2016 prospectus “Introducing Brier Neck Shores at Good Harbor Beach, Gloucester’s Newest water view condos. No big moonset this morning…

Got up at 3:00 this morning hoping to get the big moon setting… only to be met with a sky full of clouds.   Since we were up, hubs and I headed over to GHB for sunrise and a breakfast at Sugar Mags.  It’s looking good for some clear skies later on so get out and check out the moon which is scheduled to rise around 4:15.  Happy Sunday!blm_8102-edit-edit-edit

Good afternoon: I am the Commander of the Cpt. Lester S. Wass American Legion American Legion Post No., 3. We are having our annual Thanksgiving Holiday meal on Thursday, November 24, 2016. It’s completely free. I’ve attached a flyer which explains the event. I would appreciate it if you could disseminate this. It’s open to all Cape Ann residents in need, including Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester, Essex and now Ipswich, especially veterans. As always, we are looking for volunteers. I want to reach as wide an audience as I can for the holiday. I don’t want anyone who needs a meal to be left out.

For God and Country

Back To The Future

Common wisdom is that film photography is dead. Don’t believe it. An increasing number of enthusiasts (also many pros) are using old film cameras to supplement their digital camera arsenals. Instead of getting that “film quality”through digital adjustments, they opt instead for the real thing.

Is this a trend? Well Fuji and other manufacturers are producing “instant”cameras that, like the old Polaroids, produce an instant film print. In addition, 35mm film is readily available through dozens of online sites and processing services are easily found that will develop and print your film and either make the images available to download or provide them on disk, so that if the siren call of PhotoShop is irresistible, you can edit to your heart’s content.

What about cameras? I got rid of my film cameras about 10 years ago, but some of the old classics are available online. I found this nifty little Olympus 35 RC on Ebay. A $60 bid brought it home. Produced through the 1970s,the camera has a classic double image rangefinder and focus ring, can be operated either manually or in shutter priority and is solidly built of all metal. The exposure needle is battery powered, but the camera is fully mechanical, so that if the battery dies, you can approximate the exposure (or use a light meter or other camera to provide the correct exposure) and shoot away. No menus, no 400 page instruction manual, and no bewildering array of settings and controls. This particular camera carries a f2.8, 42mm lens which is the “correct” focal length for 35 mm photography.

Having said all that, I have no intention of exclusively (or even mostly)shooting film. I’m now too accustomed to my digital cameras and workflow. But this quiet little beauty calls out for some street shooting on the Boulevard.

Then commit better habits. An hour of writing every day. A morning walk. Volunteering. 20 laps in a pool 3 nights a week. It doesn’t really matter what it is so long as it is something that positively enriches you and you can make a practice of.

Over 50 people from Cape Ann and some from much further away on the North Shore just committed to 40 Days to Personal Revolution.

It was certainly powerful and you should see if it’s something for you.

One of the biggest takeaways was how empowered people feel when they start their mornings on a yoga mat.

By doing yoga in the morning, you’re ensuring that whatever successes and failures you go on to have during the rest of the day, you’ve at least given yourself the opportunity to start the day with your best foot forward.

Some mornings are worth getting up early for…

Sunrise yesterday was looking to be very blah…the clouds were behind us and there wasn’t much color on the horizon.   My friend Helen and I decided to hang out a few more minutes to see if the clouds would make it overhead in time for the sun to rise Just about when the sun hit the horizon the clouds were in good position and the skies burst into a flash of color and just as quickly it was gone.   Glad we waited!dscf5567-edit
