Hey! I’m gonna “retire” this week. No, not from playing music, but from all the suffering brought on by the sweat, the boils, and the tears of being a working class hero. Yes, I’m officially retiring! Who cares!! It’s not like anything else is changing.
So, I’m bringing in some of my loyal friends to help me cerebrate. First, there’s Mr.Paul F’oss of Bangor Me.,my Secretary of the Exterior who’s gonna manipulate his Emmenne Organ® and push for olive oil exploration in Maine. Nexxt, Mr. Bill Cunniff, former Rockport-o-rican whizzes in from Baltimore as Sec’y of States of Consiousness to help out on glitar doodies. He’s bringing a bunch of little plastic bags….. Mr. Steve “Silvertone” Coveny , Sec’y of Libel, hitchhikes in from Peabody to sing and play grueling catarrh. All held together by that kool kat of Ipswich, Mr. Dave Moore, my newest favorite Drummer. This is going to be dangerous, as you’ll have to listen to me sing most of the night. C’mon out and enjoy the spring-like weather.

Lone Gull Coffeeshop 146 Main Street, Gloucester, MA, stands out with local art. Two dynamite mini solo shows are currently on view:
One exhibit features 20 oil paintings, acrylic paintings and gouache drawings by fine artist, Leigh Slingluff. Slingluff works on Cape Ann and resides in Rockport. You may have seen her award-winning painting on exhibit during Cape Ann Plein Air or in the seArts Art Loan @Bass Rocks annual exhibit.

Lone Gull maintains a sign up sheet for 2 featured art exhibits monthly. They have begun booking into 2018 (although scattered months with 1 wall may still be available)

Pick #1: Maple Sugaring at Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary
Saturday, February 25 & Sunday, February 26
Tours at 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm
Adults: $10 and children over 3: $8
Spring celebrations begin early at the sanctuary with the age-old tradition of maple sugaring. The warm days of late winter awaken the flow of sap in the maples, causing buds to swell and resulting in sweet-smelling, billowing clouds of steam rising from the sugarhouse.
On our naturalist-guided tours, learn how to identify a sugar maple, observe tapping and sap collection methods, watch the sap being boiled down in the sugarhouse, and get a sweet taste of the final product. Afterwards, warm up by the woodstove in the Barn, where hot beverages, hot dogs cooked in maple sap, and delicious soups and desserts made by our volunteers are available for purchase.
Visit our gift shop to browse a selection of maple products, and be sure to bring home a bottle of our own freshly-made maple syrup.
Tours last about an hour and run in all weather. Dress warmly and wear warm waterproof boots because the walk is entirely outdoors.

This past December brought one of my biggest life changes. After 5 generations of my family owning and operating Bass Rocks Ocean Inn, we decided to sell. As much as we have loved being apart of Bass Rocks, seeing how happy we have made our guests, the relationships we have made- we needed our family to be closer together (some of us in Florida and some in Massachusetts). We found a resort in Little Torch Key, Florida- Parmer’s Resort. We purchased Parmer’s in January, seeing the unspoken beauty and potential of the resort. Being here for only a month, we can’t wait to make this resort as special as we were able to make Bass Rocks for so many others. Although we have started a new venture, we will never forget our family at Bass Rocks Ocean Inn and appreciate all the memories that were created there. For me, it will always be my first home.

Baltimore’s harbor is cleaner than it has been in decades thanks to two anthropomorphic trash wheels pulling debris from its waters.
Mr. Trash Wheel and Professor Trash Wheel, the latter of which was installed in December, are solar- and hydro-powered trash interceptors based in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, clearing debris before it enters the Chesapeake Bay. Over a million pounds of trash has been pulled out of the water by Mr. Trash Wheel since it was installed in May 2014.
The trash wheel’s creator, John Kellett, worked on the harbor for years and saw garbage floating on the water every day. A sailor and engineer, he approached the city and offered to take a stab at cleaning up the harbor. He built a pilot trash wheel and installed it in 2008.
No one had ever tried to stop the trash before and the task seemed daunting. Kellett quickly realized he’d have to go bigger. The pilot wheel was often unable to pick up larger debris and had only one Dumpster, so when it was being emptied, the wheel had to wait for it to return before working again.

My opportunities to drive around for the sake of shooting photos are few and far between these days, but on Monday I put one of the dogs in the car and drove through Pigeon Cove for a few minutes. Even in dreary February the colors kind of come to life and I find it so quintessential New England.
