Leonardo da Vinci Christ at Christie’s was a record breaker cue Gary Larson classic

The highest price an auction buyer paid becomes “fetched” in auction lingo. Leonardo da Vinci painting, Salvator Mundi, (Saviour of the World) fetched a stunning world record price –400million dollars at hammer price (450.3 million with fees)–at Christie’s evening sale November 15, 2017. Couldn’t resist adding a classic Larson into the mix of headlines.

Trip to Peabody Essex Museum

The Peabody Essex Museum has been “on the list” for a while now, and this week presented a great opportunity to take the ride.  Since I actively avoid Salem during October, mid November seemed like a reasonable idea for this adventure.

Although the streets of Salem were very quiet, the Museum was buzzing with school children.  It was great to see the energy and enthusiasm for the various galleries and exhibits as seen through elementary students’ eyes.

** A tip:  I was granted free admission when I showed my volunteer card for NEHGS (New England Historic Genealogical Society).  Many museums have reciprocal memberships and you might be able to be admitted at a free or reduced rate based on your other memberships.  Saved me $20!  I did purchase a ticket for the Yin Yu Tang Chinese House, which was re-erected here in 2003 from a rural village in southeastern China.  A set number of people are allowed per half hour for a self guided tour.  It was well worth the $6, but if you go in cold weather be aware there is no heat.

All rooms in the house open to the courtyard for light and air, as well as to support the principles of feng shui.

Currently a special interactive installation called XYZT is available.  This is an example which loses some effectiveness in a still photo, but this light “tree” grows from the floor, appears to grow letters which are lost to an invisible wind.  Mesmerizing.

I was delighted to see this representation of St. Peters Fiesta about 1930 from artist Gordon Beal.  Bold and bright.

Delightful visit and I’ll be going back as there was much more to enjoy.  It should be on your list too!

AN OTTERLY DELICIOUS BREAKFAST!

The North American River Otter is making an amazing comeback, not just on Cape Ann and all around Massachusetts, but in many regions throughout the United States. River Otters need unpolluted wetlands, streams, rivers, and ponds to survive, along with secluded places to den. Hollows in the banks of ponds and rivers make excellent dens and so do former Beaver lodges. As the perpetually-lodge-building Beaver has returned, so has the North American River Otter.

River Otters also need plenty of prey. Locally, they eat fish, frogs, snakes, and EELS!

This summer over in West Gloucester there appeared to be two Otter families, one mama with three pups and another mama with four pups. After watching the romp of Otters eat tadpoles and frogs early in the summer, by midsummer they had graduated to American Eels. I at first could not figure out what they were doing skirmishing around in the tall grass at the pond bank. Compared to diving and resurfacing with a mouthful of frog, this was entirely new behavior. There was much excited chortling when one of the pups caught an eel, which then seemed to set off a chain of eel ambushing and eating. One morning I had the great fun of observing three otter siblings chomping down on an otterly delicious breakfast!

First one pup catches an eel and brings it to the old wooden perch, which is also the otters favorite place to play hide and seek with each other.

Then the second pup, and soon all three were chowing down on eels!

The first one was getting jostled by his siblings and sought out more private room in which to dine.

American Eels can grow up to five feet long and weigh as much as 16 pounds. These Eels were about three to four feet long. American Eels spend most of their lives in freshwater and only return to saltwater to spawn and then die.

The pups deftly use their feet to hold fast the slippery eel.

Photographed on a different day, I think this pup is eating a snake. Notice the tapering tail in the above photo.

Why is clean water so important for River Otters? Pesticides, industrial pollution run off such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and mercury are absorbed by the River Otters prey. The chemicals accumulate in the River Otters, causing illness and death.

Since I’m housebound for a while, this is a good opportunity to take another look at some of the thousands of photos I’ve shot for GMG (not all were posted) over the past 7 1/2 years.

Photo caption: children from Gloucester MA performed with Dawn’s Studio of Dance at Walt Disney World November 7, 2017. Photos shared from participating families

On November 7, 2017, 19 children from Gloucester performed with Dawn’s Studio of Dance at Disney Springs at Walt Disney World in Florida. The Gloucester dancers did a fantatstic job performing with Disney Performing Arts under the direction of Gloucester’s instructors, Dawn Koller and Tiffany Smith. The 2017 dancers were a multi-age group, includingseniors from Gloucester High School as well as students from O’Maley and some of the local elementary schools. Many friends and family from Gloucester watched the performance and were thrilled to see Gloucester “sparkle on the Disney stage.” Dawn’s has been bringing dancers for years and some of these kids have performed at Disney World many times before. About 4 years ago, they were chosen to lead the parade at Magic Kingdom over all the other dance studios that were there to be in the parade.

Congratulations to all the dancers! A couple of more photos:

Lunch at Zeke’s

Stopped at Zeke’s for lunch. It’s a little like eating at your grandmother’s: retired men enjoying a meal; breakfast available anytime; curtains on the windows and a refrigerator covered with crayoned masterpieces. Featured artists include Phyllis A Paster, Nancy Alimansky, David Keller and Alyssa Joe.

Great lunch too!
