My View of Life on the Dock
Attention local artists and photographers…
Calling all artists!! The Magnolia Pier Commitee is actively seeking immediate donations of YOUR ART of the beautiful Magnolia pier! Portraits, sketches, etchings, photographs, framed work, printed work, paintings, sculptures, metal prints OF THE PIER … you name it, we’ll take it. The MAGNOLIA PIER COMMITTEE was formed to raise funds for the necessary rebuild of Magnolia Pier and we are presently collecting these art donations to organize an art auction, backed by the Gloucester Fund, to directly benefit the reconstruction of our beloved landmark. Please contact Alana Horne for more details. Alana.horne4541@gmail.com
Sunsets around here are beautiful wherever you may be. This view is from the Gloucester House dock looking over to St. Peter’s Park.
It’s always interesting at the Railways.

Forty-four years ago, fresh from his mid-West residency program, Dr. Bill Edgerton arrived in Gloucester with his expectant wife, Patty Joy, and their three small sons to begin his practice of podiatry. Hanging his sign on Middle street at Dr. Mo Pett’s old office, his most rewarding career was launched. “Referrals” in those days were unheard of, so daily, Dr. Edgerton would walk to lunch at Harry’s Delicatessen or grab a St.Joseph’s sandwich at Virgilio’s, and introduce himself.Soon the intown location was outgrown. Comfortable Foot Care moved to the Cape Ann Medical Center and satellite offices were opened in Danvers, Ipswich and Georgetown. Dr.Edgerton’s loyal and dedicated staff later followed him to the present location at Mill Pond to be closer to the hospital. His 27 years spent as part of the orthopedic team at AGH and Beverly Hospital have earned him the respect and warm comraderie of his medical colleagues.Currently, the only full-time podiatrist serving Cape Ann, Dr. Edgerton holds dear the trust his patients have placed in him–and most assuredly will miss the wonderful life stories they have shared with him throughout his time of curing and caring. However, the father of eight (and, “Da”, to his sixteen grandchildren) is very much looking forward to spending more time with his family, and announces his retirement as of September 26, 2018.His ever-gentlemany professionalism will certainly be missed, yet fondly remembered, as he looks ahead in hope to all that will be.

Thank you to all the generous people and organizations who added so much to the CAAA program this year.
Her Honor, Sefatia Romeo Theken, Mayor wears a stole from the Mayor of Gloucester, England as she greets us in her office at City Hall! We were fortunate to visit when such a special dignitary was in town, and she invited us to visit “the other Gloucester.” As always, Sefatia was a wonderful host.
Morgan Faulds Pike, Sculptor, gave us not only the history of her own Fishermen’s Wives Monument and the Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association but also the stories of Anna Hyatt Huntington’s “Joan of Arc,” Leonard Craske’s “Man at the Wheel” and Walker Hancock’s “Triton.”
Maggie Rosa, whose civic passion helped us to save City Hall and its iconic tower, took us up to see the bell which rings the hours in the city. The sight of Gloucester from this vantage is breathtaking. On the way up, Maggie introduced us to the citizen portraits of A. Piatt Andrew, Charles Olson, John Hayes Hammond, and Clarence Birdseye.
Daisy Nell, folk singer/sailor extraordinaire, taught us the song she wrote for all Cape Ann children to know: “A Heartbeat from the Ocean.” Daisy accompanied us in our performance at the Shalin Liu.
Artist and Art Historian, Susan Erony, showed us the beautiful Charles Allen Winter murals at City Hall and gave us the background of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal and the Works Project Administration (WPA) which supported the artists during the post-Depression era.
Sarah Flanagan, Education Coordinator at the Cape Ann Museum, was our guide to the Museum’s holdings regarding maritime Gloucester, with special attention to the late 19th c. diorama, the Fresnel lens, and the Native American artifacts.

When the cut bridge goes up, instead of complaining, I get out of the truck and take a photo and enjoy the view.

Alvin Foster, vocalist, music director, songwriter and teacher, and his band Soul Eclectic, will perform at the final free Gloucester Meetinghouse Summer Concert Series Friday, September 7, 6 – 9 pm, at the corner of Church and Middle Street.
Boston-based, Alvin Foster found his passion in music through immersion in Hip-Hop, and later, Soul and Jazz. He counts Miles Davis, James Brown, Lou Rawls and Aretha Franklin as profound musical influences. Alvin has been performing in the Boston area for 10 years. As he said, “We will play soul music underpinning Black people’s courage to be happy and celebrate life, love, spirituality and growth in the face of racism.” The band celebrates and features artists that grew up alongside Motown. Enjoy the rhythm and mojo of Alvin Foster on vocals, Tricia Reed on vocals, Oscar Brown III on guitar, Briana Washington on keyboard, Min Jae Yim on bass, and Jarrell Campbell on drums.
The concert is free. As with all of Gloucester Meetinghouse Green’s concerts, the audience is encouraged to make free-will donations. My Musical Guest: JOHN ROCKWELL!

A typical “Rockwellian” evening at the Rhumb Line might consist

song after the next (non-stop), many hilarious interactions with
everyone onstage and in the audience, continuous great singing
and great playing from a strikingly handsome guy – wait, that’s
ME! Naw, just kiddin’. It’s all things associated with one man
