Summer equals sailing lessons and helping Freddy on the boat.  Finn’s favorite job is getting the crabs out of the traps and setting them free to rejoin their friends on the ocean floor. Check out the red eggs on the female he is holding.

Salt Water Grille for Dinner

We stopped at the new Salt Water Grille for dinner over the weekend and were pretty happy we did. It’s in the old Friendly ‘s building so there’s plenty of room inside for seating diners. The bar area is expansive and comfortable. In fact, I would say the vibe is “casual comfortable “. Our waitress Abby told us there are daily specials and that they are open for lunch. We had chowder, fish and Buffalo Tenders (which were perfectly tender). Thanks Abby!

FISHERMAN OF THE SKY

While filming PiPls, from high overhead came the shrilly distinct call of an Osprey. As majestic in flight as a Bald Eagle, he perused the beach and then circled back several times more. I wondered, is he coming for Piping Plover chicks or possibly the creche of Common Eider ducklings that was sweeping the shoreline for sea lettuce.

When I returned home I read Osprey pose very little threat to baby birds. Ninety-nine percent of their diet is fish and only rarely do they hunt other creatures, mostly when fish are not available. Commonly called Fish Hawk, Sea Hawk, and River Hawk, Osprey have evolved with such highly specialized physical characteristics to aid in hunting fish that they have been given their own taxonomic genus and family (Pandion haliaetus)

School building committee votes to pursue 9 Dore & Whittier building options and timeline

On Thursday, June 20, 2019, the school building committee voted to pursue 9 school options at 3 sites recommended by Dore & Whittier (whittled down from 14 presented on June 13), and the timeline. The School Committee is meeting on the 26th to present this slate.

Ann Conneman coming to the Jane Deering Gallery

Jane Deering Gallery is pleased to present new work by Gloucester artist Ann Conneman, whose masterful hand-carved lettering in stone and on paper is exquisitely beautiful. The Dogtown Writers Festival


Finding Words in Place

The Gloucester Writers Center has designed a special event to provide multiple creative

opportunities for writing in unique venues, using the theme of “place.”

The Dogtown Writers Festival is slated for Friday and Saturday, September 27-28,

  1. 2019. The festival kicks off on Friday evening with a pre-keynote cocktail reception followed by

the Joseph Garland Keynote Address given by award-winning journalist and author, Sandy

Tolan. Saturday includes several discussion panels in the morning, afternoon writing workshops,

and an evening dinner to close the weekend. Many writing genres are covered including poetry,

fiction, nonfiction, and play-writing. There will also be a dedicated onsite workshop in Dogtown

Common and a workshop specifically for high school students, ages 14-18.

All of the events will explore, through dialogue and writing, the themes of:

“Words in Place,” “Words Over Time,” and “Words in People—Voices of Cape Ann.”

The instructors, moderators, and panelists are an accomplished group of authors, actors,

journalists, and teachers. The GWC is blessed to have secured such wonderful talent.

The many events planned are going to give writers at any level, numerous ways in which to

expand their skills and connect with other creative people.

Sawyer Free Library was Rocking on Friday Night

The Sawyer Free Library (SFL) was rocking this past Friday night, June 20th when wizard rockers Harry and the Potter performed for more than 170 fans of all ages.  Kids, teens, adults, squibs and wizards, and witches danced and sang along to the band who played fan favorites and songs from their just-released album: Lumos. Emceeing the show was Tony Goddess, local rock and roll musician, and producer of Bang-a-Song Studios in Gloucester where Harry and the Potters recorded this newest album.  This show was the first stop in the band’s 60 city concert tour of public libraries across the USA. 
 
The concert which was made possible by the generous support of The Friends of the SFL kicked off the Library’s Summer Reading Program: A Universe of Stories which runs July – August.  The fun program challenges readers of all ages to read throughout the summer for the opportunity to earn great prizes. There also will be many free, educational, and entertaining programs for library patrons to attend, providing a productive option for long summer days.  For more information please visit sawyerfreelibrary.org.

See this right here is a deal breaker for me.  The whole pooping in the house thing.  Beau sure is cute but better left in the hands of people that like dogs pooping in their house.
