Video from Cliff- whale blows (look at left of frame at 30 sec mark in the distance) and bubbles or whale footprint at center. Ten minutes prior, observers describe seeing a dramatic whale breach. They could see the whale from its back and it was so far out of the water both fins visible.

Perhaps these are the same minke whales spotted off Halibut Point July 9, 2019 mentioned in  today’s GDT here:  “On Monday, Rockport native John Parisi spotted two whales off the coast of Halibut Point on Monday while fishing with his son and his son’s friend. “We were fishing for stripers,” said Parisi. “There were a lot of porgies jumping out of the water. Then there was a huge commotion with the fish. I looked over and saw these two whales breach the ocean with their dorsal fins.” Parisi’s video here

BREAKING: LARGE MARINE MAMMALS OFF GOOD HARBOR BEACH – DOLPHIN OR WHALE OR BOTH? AN OSPREY SWOOPS IN TO FEED, AND PIPL UPDATE

On my morning PiPl check, I met up with a super nice gentleman, Bill, who walks the beach every morning. He loves wildlife (including PiPls), is a Coast Guard veteran, was a fisherman, and grew up on a marsh. Bill pointed out the whale (or he thought possibly a large dolphin), breaching and blowing blow holes off in the distance. Bill mentioned there had been a crowd along the back shore earlier and that there is tons of good bait fish off the coast right now.

Can a marine specialist please help us identify what we are looking at. Please comment in the comment section if you have a moment. Thank you so much!

How exciting at see an Osprey swoop in and snatch up a large fish precisely where the whales were fishing. All were too far away to get some really fine shots, but you can at least get an idea from the photos.

PiPl Update- all three fledglings are doing beautifully on this, their 39th day 🙂 The three spent the hours of five to seven mostly foraging in the area front of the enclosure, and also preening within the enclosure. Papa was on the scene, too.

My name is Auggie and I am a special needs pup! Who doesn’t love an adorable pup?! I am a terrier mix just about 3 months old.

I have never met a toy I didn’t like, and I think running around and playing outside is pretty much the greatest thing since sliced bread. I have made many new dog and human friends here at the shelter, so that’s a lot of fun some have even taken me offsite and I loved It! What I think would be even better is having a home and family of my very own. Maybe you can help me out?

I’m what’s called a special needs adoption because I have a heart condition called pulmonic stenosis. I take medicine called atenolol every day and there are possible surgical procedures and continued diagnostics that we could explore together if we decide that is the route we want to take but for now I am enjoying being a puppy and hoping you will take a chance on me. The doctors estimate that without any correction of the defect I could start showing clinical signs, typically fainting at 5-7 years but it is hard to predict the future so I plan on enjoying every day to the fullest!

The Crane at Magnolia Pier is taking down the pilings closest to shore.  The delay of the barge was due to some of the moorings having to move so the barge could come in and remove the rest of the pier.  It is coming along.

SNAPSHOTS FROM “NONNA, WHAT IS ST. PETER’S FIESTA” AT THE GLOUCESTER STAGE COMPANY!

On the Saturday during Fiesta, my granddaughter Charlotte and I had the joy of attending Nonna, What is St. Peter’s Fiesta, a Gloucester Stage Company original adaption of the beautiful book of the same name, written by Laura Ventimiglia. The production was fantastic, the kids wonderfully talented, and I think it was so successful that Nonna, What is St. Peter’s Fiesta is going to become a tradition at Gloucester Stage.

Many, many thanks to Laura and Heidi for inviting Charlotte and I. Charlotte, who is not quite two, had a wonderful time–the show is appealing to a wide range of ages–from the very youngest to the very oldest nonnas and nonnos in the audience.

DON’T MESS WITH MAMA (OR PAPA) – YOUR DAILY PIPING PLOVER SMACK DOWN

These beautiful shorebirds, so small you can hold one in the palm of your hand, and so softly hued, they melt into summer shades of driftwood and sand, are actually tough as nails. You would have to be mighty fierce to battle hungry gulls and crows twenty times your size, an ever shrinking habitat, extremes in weather, and oddest of all, unmated males of your own kind.

We usually refer to our disrupter as the Bachelor; in WWE terms, I think he would be called a heel. Daily, there are impromptu smack downs, mostly Papa defending the chicks, but Mama often rescues the chicks, too. Even on the 38th day of our fledgling’s lives, the Bachelor went after one of the chicks this morning. The heel snuck up and then moved aggressively towards an unsuspecting fledgling, sleepy-eyed in the sand. Papa was nearby, gave the Bachelor the business, and down the beach they both flew.

Unmated males pose a problem not only at Good Harbor Beach, but at Piping Plover nesting sites everywhere. Early in the season, I imagine it may be good for the success of the species to have a few extra males present in case the male of a mated pair is killed. But why do they continue to harass throughout the summer, especially when the female may even have left the area? Papa’s and Mama’s defense of the chicks against the Bachelor’s villainous behavior is perhaps demonstrating to the young birds life lessons in how to defend their own future broods.

Several mornings ago I observed the family feeding together in the intertidal zone, but wait, there were six, not five. Mom looked up from finishing her bath and quickly realized the Bachelor had wormed his way into the family’s territory. She went straight at him, but he held his ground. Papa heard the commotion and full on charged, chasing the Bachelor all the way down to the snack bar.

MONARCH BUTTERFLY RELEASE FROM MY FRIEND LAUREN

From four fat healthy caterpillars, Lauren released two butterflies yesterday, with two more chyrsalides yet to open. This was her first time raising Monarchs and I think she is hooked. Many thanks to Lauren for sharing her photo, just beautiful!

 

Gloucester Rotary Club Summer Social Sunset Cruise

Gloucester Rotary Summer Social 2019
The Gloucester Rotary Club will host a Sunset Cruise aboard the Privateer, docked at 63 Rogers St in downtown Gloucester, on Thursday, July 11, 2019. Boarding begins at 6:00pm, and we leave the dock at 6:30pm, returning at 9:30pm.

In addition to beautiful Gloucester vistas and refreshing ocean breezes, the cruise will include sandwiches, salads and desserts, a cash bar, and fun entertainment.

Tickets are $35 each and can be reserved by contacting Brad Pierce at 978-884-9999. The Privateer can accommodate 150 guests. Last minute walk-ons are welcome, but advance reservations are appreciated.

The Jazz Imposters take influence from Fela Kuti, Mac Demarco, The Wutang Clan, Wilco, among others. As the band continues to thrive, Saxophonist Francis Altman, Bassist Noel Rudloff and Guitarist Matt Rich are now regular members of the Imposters.
