Hot Temps in a Hot Market
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. I wish I had more time myself, but mortgage rates are low and houses are moving fast. Therefore my vacations will be limited to long weekends and later afternoon beach trips.
So how do the numbers look and why are things so busy?
According to both the Warren Group and National Associations of Realtors, the median Massachusetts price for a single family home climbed 2.1% in June 2019 for a median price of $429,000.00. The surprising number is condo prices rose over 9% to a $420,000 median price. That means that a once affordable condo, now costs on average the same price of a single family home. The other misleading number is the median price as this takes into account all of Massachusetts. Not until recently, the housing market west of 495 was slow compared to the eastern mass belts within 495 and…

THE WONDERFUL MIRACLE AND MESSINESS OF BIRTH – PIPING PLOVER CHICKS HATCHING PART ONE
As many of our readers know, this summer while finishing up with editing my Monarch film, I have also been continuing to document our Good Harbor Beach Piping Plovers. To make the best and most informed documentary, I have also been filming at other north of Boston beach locations. During our last heat wave, we posted about about how PiPl parents protect their eggs during extreme temperatures. The chicks that you see hatching in the photos are the same eggs that survived the heat wave! and are from a very, very special Piping Plover pair. More about these two parents in an upcoming post; for now I just have time to write about the chicks hatching.
Witnessing a beautiful family of Piping Plover chicks hatch is a day I won’t soon forget. Not only struck by the sheer beauty of it all, I was highly aware of the formidable challenges these valiant little birds face at every stage of development. Even hatching was messy and challenging.
On my way into work, I had been checking daily on the nest and knew the hatching day was soon approaching. Arriving at dawn on the twenty-fifth day from when the pair had begun brooding all three eggs, it was apparent and wonderfully exciting to see something was going on in the nest. Mom was on the nest and she was unusually active, moving around and adjusting the eggs repeatedly. She popped up for a split second and I could see an egg cracking. A miracle truly, that the eggs were viable, as it was so late in the season and the heat had been so extreme.
Enthralled, I watched as two chicks hatched over an hour period, but then had to leave to be on site for a job installation that couldn’t wait. I hated to leave wondering, not knowing how the third chick would fare, and just prayed that it would still be light out when I stopped back on my way home from work that night.
Part two tomorrow.

2019 Celebrate the Clean Harbor Swim #GloucesterMA is a two day festival this year!

From the race press: save the date — it’s a great, family friendly spectator sport event!
“CELEBRATE THE CLEAN HARBOR OPEN WATER SWIMMING FESTIVAL will be held August 17 and 18, 2019.
Starting off the festival will be the Clean Harbor Kids Swim on Saturday, a 500 meter swim along the shore of Niles Beach for 8-12 year olds. Held since 2015, this is a wonderful way to introduce kids to the sport of Open Water Swimming.
Also on Saturday will be the 1.2 Mile Celebrate the Clean Harbor Swim
NEW EVENT
For 2019, we are continuing a second day to the event, creating the festival. We will be holding the 10 mile Clean Harbor Relay event on Sunday, August 18th. This event will be held on a 1.0 mile course, very similar to Saturday’s event. We suggest teams of 5, and swimming through the rotation two times. Your team may have more or less than 5 swimmers. We believe the more the merrier. There will be a 6.5 hour limit. This will be a fun atmosphere, so bring a beach chair/blanket, snacks, some sunscreen and shade, and have a great time hanging out on the beach between your swims with your closest swimming friends. “
