Oriole Sighting!
Captured my first Baltimore Oriole of the season in the backyard this morning, right on time as they are expected to return the first part of May. We have also sighted a hummingbird, but the camera operator wasn’t on top of her game at that fleeting moment. Welcome back orioles and hummingbirds. What a great treat first thing this Sunday morning!

It’s Go Time For The Birdies
Property Sales: April 2019 vs April 2020
The chart shows the MLS statistics and roughly half as much Cape Ann real estate traded in April 2020 as in April of 2019.
But the story isn’t quite as grim. The good news is that it can still happen, even with our current restrictions in place, because some people really want to sell and some really want to buy.

Mother’s Day Arts Abound

artsaboundmagnolia@gmail.com
As Mother’s Day approaches, I am reminded how quickly the world continues to change. I hope you are all staying as well as you can, mentally and physically. The sad news in our world continues to come but I am trying to stay hopeful that a vaccine is coming soon and that when the crisis is over, that we will have all learned to be kinder and more forgiving to each other.
Arts Abound has been busy in our new role as face mask makers! Just today, Massachusetts’ Governor Baker stated that those folks who are not able to socially distance must wear a mask, or face a $300 fine. We expect to continue our posts at our sewing machines! We continue to donate some masks to help front line workers as well as selling them.
Our masks make a wonderful and colorful gift for Mother’s Day. Think of giving them to your mom, or maybe your dog mom, or the woman who you treats you like a mom, or maybe the mom who looks after your kids. What better way to say that you care than wanting to keep someone safer? I believe that we will each need a few masks, as the pandemic continues, so that we can have one at home, one in the wash, one in the car, and one to give to someone who doesn’t have a mask.
You can choose from the following themes: floral, abstract, juvenile, solid, or neutral. At $15 each, these masks are a great way to be fashionable and safer. You can pick them up curbside at Arts Abound or we can ship them for you for a small extra charge. Working with us is a great way to support local artists and to help our shop pay the rent while we are temporarily closed by the state.
I want to thank all of you wonderful customers for your outpouring of support during this difficult time. It has meant more to me than you can imagine…
Stay safe and sane.
Hugs to you all,
Sue Wheeler, owner

Osprey Cam is Now Live!
The Essex Greenbelt Osprey Cam for the osprey nest behind LobstaLand is now live! Click here for the link. We have been stopping by to check on these ospreys and have been quite entertained by their daily activities. In fact, I think we happened to witness some attempts at mating. We also caught (I believe) one of Essex Greenbelt staff’s reported attempts to get the camera up and running for all of us! Thanks to you all! Watching on the osprey cam will be much better than these far-away photos.
Minglewood Takeout!
I was VERY happy to see a Minglewood offering takeout. We ordered fish and chips, baked haddock and garlic Parmesan wings……oh, they were so good. What a treat. Menu available at http://www.minglewoodharborside.com or call 978–281-0223. You won’t be sorry.

June Blooms
These are extraordinary times. It is with regret that our club’s annual plant auction is cancelled. The May auction is the main source of revenue for the year to come. It funds our monthly programs, community service projects and North Shore Community College scholarship. At the end of the current year our coffers are bare. We are optimistic that life will return to normal in September, maybe even in June. We are offering an alternative fundraiser to keep Seaside Garden Club alive in its 51st year, a month of prizes in June. Each day there will be one name drawn who will win that day’s prize. The prizes are donated by club members. Calendars are $10 for one or $20 for three. You will find the June in Bloom calendar on our website, https://seasidegardenclub.wordpress.com/ and on FaceBook, https://www.facebook.com/SeasideGardenClub.
To enter, please send a check made out to Seaside…

Happy 269th birthday, Judith Sargent!

🎂Happy Birthday, Judith! John Singleton Copley’s oil portrait of early American women’s rights advocate and Gloucester native, Judith Sargent Murray, circa 1770-72, captures the 18 year old Judith in an alluring Turquerie costume, which is believed to belong to the artist. In spite of the sensuous, fluid garments, there is no mistaking Judith’s steely and determined gaze. This is a woman of power!
To celebrate Judith’s birthday, another young Gloucester woman recreates Copley’s original portrait, capturing both the sensual and determined spirit of the original subject. Please celebrate with us by sharing your own interpretation of this stunning portrait on social media and using #JudithSargentOnCanvas!
