Wellspring Holiday Store Collection

grandbanksbp's avatarCape Ann Home

Last year we were able to partner with Wellspring House to bring the community together and collect donations for their Holiday Store. As we continue to adjust to the new normal, we’d like to once again come together to support our community. With current restrictions preventing Wellsprings annual holiday store, they are instead asking for gift certificates and cash donations. While we can’t have a party this year, we can still help by collecting donations.

From now until December 11th we’ll be collecting donations of gift cards or cash here at Grand Banks. We’ll have a box on the side porch by the warehouse for drop off. If you don’t have the time to get here, you can donate online here. All of the online donations will be used to purchase Cape Ann Gift Certificates, so you can support your community by supporting local businesses.

Donations received between now…

Kent Circle Tree Lighting Committee Seeking Help

As you know, the tradition of installing and lighting a Christmas tree at Kent Circle was continued this year, thanks to extraordinary arrangements made due to the pandemic. Due to border closures, the tree had to be shipped from Halifax to Portland ME then picked up there by Ringo Tarr and his crew. The Boston Globe covered the event here. https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/11/28/metro/virtual-tree-lightings-symbol-covid-19s-impact-this-years-holiday-season/?outputType=amp

And it is beautiful.

It did get a bit battered in the winds and rain this week, but it still standing proud. Seems symbolic of the times. The Kent Circle Tree Lighting Committee is seeking help from the community to help pay for the expenses incurred in this monumental effort. A GoFundMe page has been started with a goal of $2000 and you can donate here if you choose. If you prefer to send your donation directly, please send it to Kent Circle Tree Lighting Committee 18 Timberview Dr. Gloucester MA 01930. You can follow the tree on Facebook at the Kent Circle Tree Lighting page here. It just did my heart good to see this tradition continue despite all the difficulties. I LOVE seeing the lights on the circle and would like to sincerely thank all involved in the major effort.

On The Waterfront with GMGI: November Updates

Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute's avatarCape Ann Community

2020 will be remembered as the year that saw a complete upheaval of daily life. Everyone needed to pivot and adjust — quickly — to a new normal.

Here at GMGI, it was no exception. With the stay-at-home order implemented in the Spring, our research team lost valuable time in the Institute’s laboratories. Our Academy internships were cut short due to closings, and the graduation was both delayed and scaled down.

Despite these obstacles and disappointments, the past eleven months have produced some incredible outcomes.

• The Academy graduated its fourth class (with an impressive 78% graduation rate) and enrolled a full fifth class, which has maintained in-person learning without any positive COVID-19 cases to date.
• We began the expansion of our Academy to create a new biomanufacturing learning environment, made possible by a grant from Governor Baker’s Workforce Development Cabinet.
• Our Science team continued its innovative research…

Happy Hookers of Cape Ann show up for Ladies (Day?) Night 2020Photos from Cat Cavallinni

The Happy Hookers of Cape Ann, a local group of SLUTS (stressed out ladies unwinding together-during a pandemic!), are making their debut on Main Street during Ladies Night 2020.  They are crocheting and selling cozy handmade ‘warrior shawls’ and blankets in an effort to raise funds toward food insecurity in Gloucester.  Let’s shop locally, help donate locally, these make great holiday gifts.  You can find these creations on Main St. at Mermaid’s Tale (foto with Lourie Killian, owner), The Dress Code (foto with Barbara, owner) as well as Design of Mine (thank you Melissa). They are also in Magnolia at Arts Abound (thank you Sue) and The Magnolia Shoppe (thank you Betty, Magnolia Historical Society).  Much thanks to our local shops for supporting the cause and keeping the Hookers happy!  Contact the Happy Hookers of Cape Ann at crcav@msn.com if you’d like to place an order.  We will do custom designed colors of your choice.  Stay safe and Happy Holidays!

First Bread Of The Season

So great topped with Everything But The Bagel Seasoning.

Going to experiment this year with different types of bread. I’d like to try a honey molasses one if anyone has a great recipe they’d like to share.

Turtle Alley

I received this wonderful box of turtles not too long ago and wanted to remind you all to make a plan to stop in Turtle Alley for some of your own holiday shopping.
